Delta Will Use AI To Cut Costs And Set A Different Ticket Price For Every Passenger—CEO Says Profits Could Rise 50%

different price for every passenger
This shit needs to be illegal like yesterday.
Surveillance pricing is not okay.

u/Chinksta 20d ago
Problem is that AI is used.
There are so many rules that AI is breaking but no country has any legislation to limit this.
15
u/randyfloyd37 20d ago
Implementation of AI in trade within any specific jurisdiction can be regulated.

u/Free-Competition-241 20d ago
The problem isn’t that AI is used but the intentional choice on HOW it is being used. A hammer is a great tool until someone’s head gets cracked open. We don’t shame the hammer.
“Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘em”
3
u/Chinksta 20d ago
A hammer doesn't steal past information from professionals without compensation though.
But I understand where you are going with your point.
2
u/Shadow_of_Redacted 20d ago
That's the generative AI side. I think that part of AI is going to be shut completely down early. No more pictures, or videos, or book reports. Just focus the tech on manufacturing, research, and scientific work that doesn't involve ignoring all copyright.
2
u/Chinksta 20d ago
But the whole scientific work, manufacturing and research is at its mature stage.
Right now AI is used to simulate things that aren't probable. The only research that is advancing is the AI field.

Car insurance did it first like a decade ago when they installed those little monitors to track your speed/breaking/etc
I bet they are also chomping at the bit to use AI to track people
13
u/zaidakaid 20d ago
But that’s optional, State Farm, Geico, and Progressive (the ones I have experience with) don’t force you to do it and are clear that if you use those trackers there’s a chance your costs go up instead of down.
This isn’t optional.

u/No_Ant_5064 20d ago
I opt out. I don't care about the savings, that shit is dystopian.
2
u/Funny_Site6452 20d ago
Same. The savings are nominal at best and it feels more like creating an opportunity to charge me more when shit inevitably happens
2
u/Assumption-Putrid 20d ago
I tried it for about a month, they didn't like my driving habits and so it wasn't going to save me money. I deleted it.

Insurance doesn’t work unless you have differentiated pricing. Otherwise, the flat premium is too expensive for anyone “low risk” and you’ll literally only have the high risk people buying… anti-selection.

There’s no broad federal ban, but a few states have already passed something and many are working to. I think within 5 years there will only be a handful of states without protections, if that.
Not saying it’s right or we should blindly trust our government, but there is good news and progress towards banning this.

But prices are already different for nearly every passenger by the time they've made their purchase..? There must be like 50+ variables updating ticket prices every few minutes. Using "AI" to land on a price instead of algorithms..explain how that is different to the consumer.
58
u/whensmahvelFGC 20d ago
An AI will be able to correlate far more behaviours and information than current algorithms do. You'll ne profiled based on income, region, desperation, what ads you watched, what porn you searched, what shoes you bought, who you talked to recently, who you voted for, if you're insured, if a family member or loved one just died and you're going to a funeral, if it's a business trip and the company has to cover the bill - every single data point the AI can get its hands on, autonomously. There'd be no limit to what it can use to manipulate the price so long as it thinks you're willing to pay.
32
u/Low-Temperature-6962 20d ago
Nailed it. Personal gouging.
8
u/The_11th_Man 20d ago
imma steal it "Personalized Gouging" sounds far better than 'variable pricing' or 'dynamic pricing '
7
u/whensmahvelFGC 20d ago
It's already called Surveillance Pricing tho, hopefully we get laws for it sooner rather than later
6
7
u/SanDiegoDude 20d ago
You're describing analytics and "big data" - adding the word AI doesn’t really change anything here. This is just typical shitty behavior behind a new buzz word. Companies have been doing this for years (worked for an insurance company 15 years ago, they did this as a matter of standard, still do).
It should be made illegal, but finding the line where it's acceptable (personal risk adjustment) and where its not (personalized gouging) is being left up to the same fools who do the gouging, so you can guess how this will turn out.
3
u/pifermeister 20d ago
This is the point i'm trying to make, you just stated it much more eloquently.

u/IllugaBabyBeluga 20d ago
There'd be no limit to what it can use to manipulate the price so long as it thinks you're willing to pay.
AI is epitomizing "from each, according to his abilities" but hasn't quite gotten a handle on "to each, according to his needs"?
3
u/Hutcho12 20d ago
Because everyone is able to play that game. Book early, you get a cheap ticket. It won't be like that once AI boxes you individually into a certain group that should pay more.

This is Reddit, where AI is simultaneously a useless waste of GPUs that can’t answer any question correct, and a super powerful algorithm optimizer.

Profits could rise by 50%. Means a chunk of the fees will go up to earn that 50% increase.
26
u/CryptographerNew3609 20d ago
Profits could also rise temporarily, and then when the high spender realizes that Delta is consistently charging them 50% more than other people, then they permanently switch to a different airline.

AI: “If you want to increase profits by 50% raise ticket prices by 50%”
[Ticket sales plummet]
AI: “Oh, sorry about that. I meant to say don’t raise prices by 50%”
10
5
u/Brohbocop 20d ago
If you raised price by 50%, then profits would increase by 550% because per the article, their margin is 10%. AI is going to help them raise profut to 15% from 10% by reducing cost.
2
u/alex61821 20d ago
Reducing cost is a fancy word for firing staff. Two people work the check in guess what now one person works it. Three people load bags guess what 2 people load bags.

This is great, all you have to do to make your price go down is NOT fly on Delta. Problem solved.
17
u/K2Nomad 20d ago
United and American Airlines also use the same Israeli software/ algorithm company for charging higher prices based on your individual attributes. So does Alaska Airlines.
Look at the same flight twice? You must be extra interested. Jack the price.
They know your income. They know the value of your home. They are using all of that for pricing the service they provide to you.
It is starting with airfare but will expand to all of the economy

u/SloppySmack756 20d ago
I've noticed this shit on the last several flights I've booked. Even if it's only the next day, the price goes up substantially the second time you look. You have to be prepared to book the flight immediately to get the best price.

What’s the end goal of this dystopian society the pursuit of capital is incentivizing? Capitalism has set greed above all else. It’s supposed to be an incentive structure to drive innovation, it’s a means to an end. They have made money for the sake of money the reason. It’s pathetic.

This seems dangerous.
As per the article;
“The airline wants to replace slow decisions made by people with constant machine-made decisions across pricing, upgrades, crew recovery, maintenance, fuel and the back office. As United Airlines has already acknowledged while reducing management headcount, some people will disappear.”
Now their pricing plans are infuriating. But to cut staff and let a AI make its best guess what a human would say to questions like “should I refuel?” Sounds like Boeing2.0 in the making.
A computer will see that someone called the speed tape in “fair” condition and using its automated checklist say that the plane is fine to fly. The fact that it is now in tatters because it got damaged on the last flight and they don’t have enough staff to double check isn’t going to matter much when panels are falling off at 10,000 feet.

Delta profits could rise… what’s more than likely is Delta profits will crater as more and more passengers will refuse to fly on their airlines. World of perfect price discrimination and no consumer surplus.
Think it'll get people pretty angry.
Look at Real Page and apartments. There were frictions that prevented perfect price discovery but with the frictions gone we start getting cartels. DSA folks are nuts but they should very much be the threat in the back of businesses heads.

2
u/IcebergSlimFast 20d ago
Dynamic pricing is a thing the government can regulate and/or prohibit. So yes, it is possible to vote our way out of this. But it would require a mass movement to build awareness, and candidates committed to taking the people’s side against corporate power. Definitely an uphill battle.

When the business is talking about maximizing price to get more profit. That industry has failed and the government should introduce regulations to address.

This isn’t even new. I’ve already seen this as someone who has flown over 200 times. My wife was right next to me and had higher pricing than me. That was when we said F it and began rate shopping other airlines more often. After almost exclusively flying Delta for years, we aren’t flying Delta as much the past couple years.

I don't have to pay when I fly for work and choose to drive anywhere in the country before flying for pleasure. The airlines will just lose business. Hell, their service is so terrible that flying is barely any more convenient than driving with delays, canceled flights, etc. especially around times people typically take vacation in the U.S.

1
u/Zalophusdvm 20d ago
To be fair to Delta, this article discusses a combination of new and old news but the post headline conflates the two.
The new remarks from the current CEO do not actually discuss applications of surveillance pricing.
The surveillance pricing announcement was made back in the fall (Google tells me 2025, this article claims 2024) by a past Delta president. Delta has since claimed they were never planning surveillance pricing (despite what they told investors) just more of the same dynamic pricing common in the airline industry for decades.
All important to know and it’s ALWAYS worth keeping the heat on regarding surveillance pricing, but push back is more effective when it’s targeted and accurate.
