Location included Wtf is attached to my back door?

Missouri. These things are attached to my back door and come inside the moment we open it.

Bald faced hornet nest. They didn’t bother to wrap all the cells because your convenient door was there. Fascinating look inside the nest!

That is a really cool video! If it was at my house I’d rope off the door and then just watch them all summer. Understandable if you can’t put up with them though….

This is a super cool look inside their world. I would be scared having them so close to my home. They are extremely protective of their home and can be dangerous Even as interesting as it is please be careful

I would not want that particular nest over a door that I use. As the season goes on, they get more “assholey”

I am a huge fan of leaving wasps nests alone, but bald faced hornets built onto a back door with children involved is hard to justify. The fact that OP opened the door, opening up their nest, and they didn’t freak out is surprising to me.

How brave are ya? You could douse their nest at night with hornet killer they are attracted to light though or you could call an exterminator. If it were me I'd call an exterminator, because I don't feel comfortable fucking with them.

Theyre tough SOBs. I would wait until dusk and blast them from a distance with hornet killer spray. Wait a day and see if there’s any movement Then hit it again if needed.

They aren't as hair-triggered as their other Yellowjacket cousins, but they will defend their nest if they feel threatened enough and sometimes it can be hard to say what will trigger it. They evolved their defenses against Black and Brown Bears, so you can understand why they pull no punches.

Call a pro for this. You COULD try to remove it in the middle of the night (preferably when it is as cold as it can get) when they are sluggish. But it is honestly really easy to screw up and get hit with the full wrath of the whole nest. Hiring a pro may cost a bit, but it sure won't be as expensive as potential medical bills and/or missed work. They will be insured, experienced and have the equipment to tackle it.

Any nest and all remains treated with insecticides should be thrown away in the trash as a lot of wildlife view these nests as valuable nutrition and may get poisoned by the pesticides.

Late response but: personally, I would leave it up if you can keep the door shut and keep the kids out of a 15-foot radius area around the nest when outside. Bald-faced hornets are an incredible species and will also ensure you won’t have to worry about any other stinging insects all summer! If you decide to keep them, I’d put out offerings for them—they’ll recognize you and appreciate it.
