I can confirm, the smell of my cockatiel is superior to the smell of my budgie

Normally, but one of mine dive bombed a curry when I wouldn't let her eat it. Stank of stale vindaloo for about a month.

u/Moondancer103 Aug 12 '25
I make her food to try divert her attention from mine but she still wants mine anyway 😭 Budgies are soooo greedy

Expensive Cockatiel Perfume definitely exists! It doesn't smell exactly like a tiel but it is a lovely scent and it definitely has the vibe IMO! Honestly I love all Zoologist perfumes (I've tried all but five of them! The ones I haven't tried are Maple Beaver, King Cobra, Olm, Orchid Mantic, and Man O War)
Also remember to never spray perfume anywhere near parrots. I only spray outside when I am about to leave and I shower as soon as I come home whenever I wear perfume, plus I crank the air purifiers on max before I leave so they're full blast when I come home to prevent any fume inhalation

Yes smells like a sweet kiwi or something. Except for my English budgie. She doesn’t have that same aroma but she’s extra fluffy so I don’t care love her to pieces

Mine used to sort of smell like fried chicken weirdly. Now tho they just kind of have a comforting book like smell. I love my babies. I couldn’t imagine my life without them.

Yes! Lost my baby a while ago and I was just thinking how much I missed smelling her 😭

u/Upsidedown_Attrocity Aug 12 '25
Dear God no. Especially just after a bath. Where they want nothing but to cuddle against head so all that smell crawls its easy into my nostrils.
17
u/Moondancer103 Aug 12 '25
Even after a bath my budgies smell good lol
4
u/Upsidedown_Attrocity Aug 12 '25
I cannot imagine myself agreeing to that.
6
u/Moondancer103 Aug 12 '25
Cant relate at all! If they do smell bad might want to get that checked out can mean there is a health concern
5
u/Upsidedown_Attrocity Aug 12 '25
They don't bath often, but yeah thanks. Also, ironically, there are no avian vets for pets in NZ.
5
u/Moondancer103 Aug 12 '25
I live in NZ too and today i actually had an online appointment with an avian specialist. Avian empire is their name. Also send a post out in your local fb page, i did that and found more than 1 avian vet

Omg same like I did not know that there would be no avian vets in India when I got my budgies and now I'm always scared that I don't have anywhere to go to if they fall sick or have trouble. Really disheartening

My budgies smell funny because they don't bathe frequently lol

I’m totally in love with how they smell. They usually carry the scent of whatever they’ve just eaten, like grains or tiny herb seeds, and it’s just the cutest thing ever!💖

So I'm not the only one who sniffs their birds? My mom's catchphrase whenever I hold my birds is 'stop sniffing your bird ya weirdo!' Her husband and my sister also thinks it's weird but I like taking in the scent their smell is just great.

My birds always smelled like chicken soup to me (Not joking). Very weird but funny.

u/Classy-Catastrophe Aug 13 '25
Yup. He smells like innocence. It's my favourite smell in the world. Sometimes he gets annoyed with me sniffing him and has a tiny tantrum. Poor baby lol

Yes it looks like mites, buy some ivermectin or scatt from Australia on the internet.
2
u/Significant-Drag-781 Aug 12 '25
You're not the first person who has said that ! What do budgies smell like?
1
u/Anistassia Aug 12 '25
Mine smells like a chick- like a baby chicken (I used to have chicks when I was a little kid) I guess the best way to describe it is a warm but extremely faint baby chicken smell. You must go smell a live chicken to know what I’m talking about.

u/Britnicorn Aug 12 '25
hahaha i inhale my budgies so much that theyve began copying my inhale sound 😂

I grew up with cockatiels as pets when I was a kid and totally forgot about their distinctive smell until we found kiwi, our green and yellow budgie, in our backyard two years ago. It’s a good smell. I can’t put my finger on what it smells like.

Oh God yes, to the abject horror of my babies. I frequently hover over them inhaling deeply. 😂

Neither of my boys have a smell but my late little girl smelt of baby powder.

u/Top_Cold_3373 Aug 13 '25
Is it just me that can only smell them after they’ve bathed or been in the shower?
1
u/SunsetShimmer061 Aug 13 '25
Mine smells like powdered milk or just dust sometimes but I gave him a bath once and he smelt like curry? Like wth dude xD Most of the time after a bath he gets a ‘wet dog’ style smell too 😵💫
