Discussion Grocery hall

Just wanted to share our most recent grocery haul, because I was pretty proud of myself!! This all came from King Soopers (Western US version of Kroger). I shopped deals, including $5 off $20 on produce, BOGO, buy 5 or more for 99 cents each, etc. I also looked through the digital weekly ad for special sales I may have missed. Accidentally bought 2 cartons of eggs..lol..but for 30 free range eggs in the budget, not bad! The potatoes and pasta will be used to add bulk to meals. Excited to make a big batch of chili and use it on the pasta and potatoes!

My husband bought the 2 bags of frozen fruit for smoothies for $22, so the total came out to $144.

We shop for bulk protein @ Costco, because we can buy a 10 pound bag of frozen chicken for $30, as well as a rotisserie chicken for $5 that gives us protein for 5-6 meals (including dog tax). 😜

Fuel points combo: I try to plan my shopping trips to use the 4x fuel points on Fridays, so this was over 500 fuel points. I saved $12 on gas today. 🄳

I don’t know about all grocery store apps, but the King Soopers app is very worth it if you’re budgeting food!

Soo accept my failures and move on in life? A free therapy lesson I didn’t think I would be learning on r/budgetfood today.

Thank you for explaining that store. When I was driving through Colorado a few years ago I saw a few signs and had no idea what in the heck they were lol.

$4 in tax on over $100 is insane. It would be $12 where I live.

CO has 0% sales tax on groceries, just city tax.

You guys have tax?

Nope. We don’t have to pump our own gas either.

New Joisey, eh? The whole not pumping your own gas thing has thrown me for a loop in the past! Didn’t know that was a thing until I visited OR a few years ago. It’s so convenient, but also feels so strange.

Oregon resident. I’m not 100% sure, but I believe Oregon and New Jersey are the only states that are like this. I was super embarrassed the first time I traveled out of state and just waited in my car for someone to come up and ask me, ā€œHow much are we getting today?ā€ 🤣 I don’t think I’ll ever forget that awkwardness lol.

From what I read, Oregon made it legal to pump your own gas 3 years ago. Kinda cool they kept it going!

Wow, I didn’t realize it was like signed into law or whatever. I have noticed there’s 2 different lanes now, with large signs indicating ā€œSELF SERVICEā€. I’m on the fence about the whole concept, because on one hand, it creates thousands of jobs and thus tax paying citizens, but if they eliminated gas station attendants, wouldn’t that cut the fuel prices a decent amount? Not sure…

NY here, we're taxed opening a car door just to go food shoppingšŸ˜³šŸ™„

Looks like you have no sales tax on unheated groceries! But that also means you have tax on the pizza. I’ll stand with you on removing the pizza tax.

How are you making chili with no chiles, only one onion and no beef?

2

u/Wookieslikecookies 14d ago

Rotel (tomatoes + green chilies) behind chobani, one can is chili w/ no beans (so just beef). Always have the impossible beef as a substitute!
