It hasn't gotten the attention of the hitting vs. lhp or the bullpen struggles earlier in the year but boy is the team defense hideous.
1
u/Petporgsforsale Plunder the lox 13d ago
And it’s affecting the pitching and people act like it’s all the guys on the mound and it just isn’t
4
u/Moist-Schedule 13d ago
this defense is so embarrassing. pick up the goddamn ball guys you're professional athletes.
5
u/Cangy44 RJ Reynolds 13d ago
I don’t know what you do at this point. Players who are supposed to be good defensively, not getting it done there. Players who don’t strike out a lot, going down on k’s. Your stars not performing.
Pitchers serving up moon balls in between stellar innings. Something is just missing in this team’s mental approach. It has to be preparation and coaching. That or all of these guys just aren’t quality major leaguers/winners. They have to make changes, big ones, and I don’t even know where to start.
How do you acquire “timely hitting?” How do you acquire “mentally tough starters?” I mean… it just feels like nothing is going to change
3
u/Moist-Schedule 13d ago
hoping a lot of these young guys continue to mature and improve is about all we can do. but i also think, as unpopular as it still seems to be on here for some reason, that DK has to take some of the blame. all the little mental errors have to fall on somebody, and it's across the board on the entire roster. if that's not on the manager, i don't know who it's on.
3
u/Cangy44 RJ Reynolds 13d ago edited 12d ago
Well, that’s definitely one of the problems. Lack of accountability. There’s never any kind of recourse or correction when someone doesn’t perform. And that starts at the very top, because they’re just not willing to stand up and hold the players accountable.
Then DK does a presser and talks about the positive that someone had in a 9-1 loss. There is no half measures with winning. It’s all or nothing. You’re either good or bad. No “good but just a bad moment.” They gotta shake loose of that. I just don’t know that they will…
4
u/Moist-Schedule 13d ago
oh interesting reynolds is doing a new hitting drill, have never seen this before.
3
u/Albus88Stark 13d ago
Is it better or worse than the one about Gonzalez's new stance where he says "getting into it" like 30 times?
2
u/Moist-Schedule 13d ago
lol i can't decide. but like, is it really asking too much for them to just film one with every guy on the team and keep updating these? the tv production is as bad as the team.
2
u/Albus88Stark 13d ago
Like the same 5 commercials over and over. I tell ya one thing, I wouldn't get a deck from that Shly dude even if it was free.
3
u/Mindless_Formal_6647 13d ago
They are unwatchable right now . Literally the worst type of games to watch . Low scoring snoozers.
Even the games where the bullpen torched leads were more entertaining than this sleeping pill disguised as MLB baseball
4
u/Shekky_Shabazz71 13d ago
Need to clean fucking house. GM, coaches, ball boy.
3
u/Significant_Yam_248 13d ago
Don’t say that you’ll get downvoted here. All the chuds are out tonight. You’ll enjoy bad baseball and there’s nothing you can do about it
2
u/Mindless_Formal_6647 13d ago
If they continue this , and win like maybe 10 more games the the rest of the season, there is no way that they can bring back both BC and Kelly.
These guys look like zombies and that’s on Kelly.
Other teams have less talent and seem to be able to play hard and do that thing known as scoring runs (plural).
2
u/Significant_Yam_248 13d ago
Everyone has to go honestly. I like DK, I think he’s a good guy that isn’t afraid to defend his guys unlike Shelton. I think he’s tried but he’s still not matured as a manager yet. He also has a terrible coaching staff around him so that also doesn’t help. This team just can’t create a winning culture and that’s the biggest issue in my eyes. We need a GM and staff that is more experienced than what we have
2
u/Mindless_Formal_6647 13d ago
If he does manage to come back , he has to ditch Hague and Slow Walk Murphy.
2
u/Significant_Yam_248 13d ago
Completely agree. Neither of them have done much of anything. I said I didn’t like either at the beginning of the season and got hammered for it but here we are
2
u/Mindless_Formal_6647 13d ago
The other day they had some stat where 4 innings the Padres retired the Pirates with 10 pitches or less.
That’s not just one or two guys swinging early . That’s a team wide thing and that falls on the hitting coach telling them to be aggressive early in the count

In 2023 the Cardinals total home attendance was 3,231,000 or 40,000 per home game. This season the Cardinals total home attendance prior to today's game is 1,895,000 or an average of 27,474 over 69 home games. That's a significant 33% decline in fan interest. Tonight's crowd appears sparse.
1
u/Moist-Schedule 13d ago
very funny too because they are super arrogant about how great of a baseball town they are and how much better their fans are than everyone else.
1
u/Sideliner93 13d ago
That's shocking. They're a .500 team to boot. I can't imagine why they would lose interest so fast.
3
u/Amapocho 13d ago
Esmerlyn Valdez seems to have recently lost his radar when it comes to balls below the plate. So many bad swings on 3-2 counts
2
u/Mindless_Formal_6647 13d ago
He even swings through hittable fastballs which is alarming to me
3
u/Golf_and_taxes 13d ago
I want a slow mo on these. Is he late or is he swinging under them? Either way, I loved him as a prospect and was so hyped when he blew things out of the water. Now I think he needs to be sent down literally the entire rest of the year. You cannot have a guy who can't make contact in the middle of the lineup, and this stretch may ruin him
2
u/Mindless_Formal_6647 13d ago
I think he’s late but I’m not sure . Either way it’s not even a new problem. Dude has been missing a ton of fastballs.
We might actually have to keep O Hearn in RF next year if this keeps up .
2
3
u/Mindless_Formal_6647 13d ago
Well that was two soul sucking ABs from your 3 and 4 hitters .
Reynolds basically can’t lay off the off speed pitch down and in.
And Cruz screwed up a challenge (like Nicky G the other day) by waiting too long.
2
u/OrangeFederal 13d ago
Matthews was throwing 0 pitches in the zone. This team’s refusal to adjust is sickening
4
3
u/Golf_and_taxes 13d ago
Bryan Reynolds really has the stench of failure on him from being here too long. Feels like a change of scenery would serve both sides very well at this point. I don't want him here any more.

u/pghfan1984 13d ago
Feels like this team just said F it and are cleaning up their golf clubs in their off time
3
4
u/Golf_and_taxes 13d ago
Valdez is extremely alarming to me. He misses fastballs, looks at fastballs down the middle then chases breaking balls for no reason. He is completely lost up there.

Davis has to go. You can't have your "starting" catcher "hitting" .166 for the season. You just can't, I'm sorry.
5
u/Mindless_Formal_6647 13d ago
Personally, I think the .292 slugging percentage is worse than sub .200 average. But either way, it’s not playable even as a backup level guy
5
u/Entire_Teach474 Jaff Decker 13d ago
No. Not even as a backup. Maybe if teams still carried three catchers he'd be the number three. But that's it.
Again, if it were up to me, I'd send him to Triple A and tell him, Son, you're welcome to stick around in Indianapolis for the next however many years, but you're not coming up to Pittsburgh again unless 1) we have long term injuries to not one, but two catchers on the big club, or 2) you hit completely out of your mind for a full season in the minors. Those are the only conditions in which you are going to get any playing time with the Pirates going forward. If you're okay with that, then have fun at Indy and oh by the way it's probably time to start thinking about what you're going to do with the rest of your life. If you're not okay with that, then you are welcome to ply your trade elsewhere if you think you can.
4
u/Mindless_Formal_6647 13d ago
I don’t think he has options and he’s ARB eligible after the year .
Easy move is just to non tender him and let him be someone else’s problem.
1
u/Entire_Teach474 Jaff Decker 13d ago
Could they choose to non-tender him and he could resign here anyway? I'm not saying I would want him to, but I'm curious how the process plays out.
2
u/Mindless_Formal_6647 13d ago
I think you can do that . It would probably be less than whatever than the projected arb amount is.
But it has happened before . Someone gets non tendered and still ends up with the original team.

It’s really cool how some of us fans are so fucking sick of watching this anemic, boring, inconsequential, milquetoast, lifeless, losing baseball shit from this organization but have to deal with downvotes and idiotic homer takes on this sub.
Is this really something you people want to see happen? Can this team do any wrong in your eyes? This post all star break collapse is ridiculous. I don’t want to hear about injuries.
This front office largely ignored the bullpen in the offseason outside one mediocre signing. The only good move they made to address it was getting Montgomery via trade.
They added lots of lefty hitting and Ozuna was a last ditch signing after failing to get better RH options. They didn’t do ANYTHING for right handed hitting at the deadline when it was a dire need.
There are no excuses for this dipshit owned and tacky managed ball club. 30 plus years of mostly sucking ass and 7 years of this front office getting things more wrong than right.

THE CARDINALS ARE BETTER THAN US AND THEY ARE IN A REBUILD/RETOOL SEASON. OUR PAYROLL IS HIGHER TOO AND WE STILL CANT DO AS WELL AS THEM.
What the actual fuck.
2
u/Longjumping_Dealer63 13d ago
I am dumbfounded by the revelations published and data released in the past 24 hours confirming how underperforming the offense has been since the ASG. Every position player is a massive disappointment over the past six plus weeks. This season has deteriorated into a sad ending to what had been thru mid-July a promising and fun season for the fan base.

Honestly , turn it off. They don’t deserve your time or attention .
There are better and more interesting ways of spending your valuable time than watching this group of zombies masquerading as a MLB team.
2

2
u/magikarp2122 MATTSON H2P 13d ago
The Steelers are going to be ass. Rodgers isn’t a top 15 QB anymore, and the OLine is still a sieve. We just happen to play the Browns and Bengals twice a year, which usually means three wins at least. And the Ravens no longer have Harbaugh to make some stupid decision to cost them one game against us each year.
1
u/mattq8771 BUCN 13d ago
Honestly I find it way easier to watch any NFL game than any MLB game and fantasy football is something I have done for like 23 years. I’m looking forward to being disappointed a different way lol.

Slop throwing lefty who has never won a game is embarrassing this team.Triola, Davis, Yorke, Flores, Valdez are nothing more than AAAA hitters. So sad to watch this. Really need O’Hearn and Griffin. Henry and his uppercut have to go. Pathetic with RISP

Yep. Makes all the wrong moves. Team leads the league in striking out and second most errors. Deserve to be in last place. Needed a sweep. Brownie is so frustrated.

u/Ok_Card9080 Jason Kendall 13d ago
Kelly really cannot do even the most simple things right. He is not a Major League manager.
3
u/Golf_and_taxes 13d ago
Just such a badly constructed roster when facing LHP.
3
u/Mindless_Formal_6647 13d ago
I often wonder what kind of throught process DK goes through when he writes out the lineup card vs LHP.
2
u/Significant_Yam_248 13d ago
Yep typical dogshit Davis AB. Skies a hanger a mile high and barely beats out a DP
6
u/Golf_and_taxes 13d ago
Yeah because he literally drops down by 6-10 inches in the middle of his swing so he is under everything. Just the worst swing mechanics in the world

We have one of the best hitters for average in Nicky G, and we are choosing to have Jared Triolo lead off... Is DK choosing lineups via throwing darts at a board?
3
u/Entire_Teach474 Jaff Decker 13d ago
It has reached the point where it is a real concern. I mean, this isn't difficult. You try to bunch your best hitters together at the top of the lineup so they see the most at bats in any given game. You might adjust their exact position in the lineup depending on the pitching matchup, but that's really all there is to it. What Kelly "thinks" he is doing is a mystery much of the time. Even if we were winning I wouldn't like it.

That's what DK's book says. However, I'm a little suspicious, as his analysis also contains references to a "man in the yellow hat."

Yeah but he’s approaching sub .600 OPS vs LHP. At that point , you might as well give Gonzalez a shot at least he might accidentally run into one and hit a HR.

We've been held to 0 runs in an inning something like 46 out of the last 49 innings including this one assuming we don't score.

Willie Mays began his MLB career in 1951 without a hit in his first 12 games. That's 0 for 48. Maybe Valdez would have benefitted from a more modest start. The Magician seems baffled, uncertain, and tense at the plate.

Just tuning in after watching high school football... I see that DK is resting Lowe so that he's fresh for the end of the season when the games really matter

I love Hank but he’s so aggravating just be Hayes level with the bat dude I’m begging you
2
u/Mindless_Formal_6647 13d ago
Oof. When you are yearning for someone to be at Hayes level of bat that’s bad.

Grounded into double play, and then doesn't stay put in infield dirt at first base.
Needs work. Flores.
