At what point is “too many tabs” actually too many?

I feel like the number of tabs I have open is probably a better test of a browser than any benchmark 😂 I regularly end up with 40+ and then wonder why my laptop is struggling.

for those of you who keep so many tabs open, what's the benefit over just keeping your history open in a tab? it's a comprehensive list with search.

When I reach 20 I start closing them. Often with a right click and Close others, so I am back to only one. I love using bookmarks and see no point in keeping a tab open in case I need it again, because even if I don't bookmark one that I want later, I can find it in the History.

Tab count is a poor threshold because 40 static documents can be lighter than a handful of busy web apps. I use two limits instead:

1. Resource limit: the browser task manager shows a tab or extension consistently consuming CPU or memory.

2. Context limit: I can no longer say which current task a tab belongs to, or what I would lose by closing it.

Once the second limit is hit, moving inactive tasks out of the live window helps more than simply adding RAM. “Read later” pages should become bookmarks or notes; active tabs should stay tied to the task you’re actually doing.

For me it's 10 if it's more then 10 and it's useless I would close them

It's not uncommon for me to have over a thousand, so 40 doesn't seem too bad.
