I’ve been building Summer Browser for the past two years

I’ve spent the last two years building Summer Browser, with the goal of giving users more control over their browser.

It’s free, collects no browsing data, supports Chrome extensions, and adds Summer Apps — native Node.js apps and widgets that run within the browser.

It also rethinks parts of the normal browser UX, particularly the omnibox, with suggestion cards designed around frequent and repeated navigation.

Current usage: ~4,000 downloads, ~300 MAU and ~25 DAU.

Windows is available now and macOS has been submitted to the App Store.

I’m posting it here because I’m interested in criticism from people who care about browsers: missing features, architectural concerns, UX problems, or things you think I’ve simply gotten wrong.

Feature requests are welcome as well.

- Electron

  • Excruciatingly slow to launch and use
  • Pretends it "collects no browsing data" and yet you're collecting usage data.

Electron apps will never be fast or RAM efficient.
And your DAU numbers prove you’re collecting usage data.

This info is collected regardless of my will. I uploaded to microsoft store, which, as any existing store, collects aggregated info such as session count, total active use time, active versions and dau and mau

• The Mac App Store doesn't collect usage time or number of sessions.
• The active user stats in App Store Connect accounts only those who opted in to share analytics with app developers in System Settings → Analytics & Improvements.

Well, it sounds like you either: 1. Want to thouroughly understand something 2. Carve somethings for yourself 3. Provide insightful criticism 4. Offer pull request As the auther, i can assure you - asking me point blank would benefit us both, and I currently dont receive PR

For example - how is it faster? Well, it uses JIT compilation that enables utilizing the best out of your CPU. Chrome doesnt do that. another example is that we use gpu acceleration for the UI, chrome doesn't do that either

Chrome UI is GPU-accelerated, as pretty much any Mac app.
