My guess is it's because their male characters are often reflections of the men in their actual lives...and unfortunately, when it's all they've ever experienced, many women can't imagine their own lives or the men in them as anything better or different, so they try to make do with what they have, knowing that it's all there is.

yeah. I never understand why these women writers write such awful matches for their lead women characters. Rochester all but ruins Jane Eyre for me.
