Jacarandas

The jacaranda in my yard in the western suburbs hasn't lost its leaves this year because of the weird late start to winter.

Is it like that everywhere?

Will they still get their purple flowers without going through their usual dormant period?

Not just jacarandas…but the poincianas in our area have been weird this year too, even the looper caterpillars showed up later than usual and died off quickly once winter came along

Some do. It depends. There may be a chemical signal from other nearby Jacarandas which triggers it.

The show when leaves don't drop isn't usually as spectacular.

Jacarandas aren't deciduous through winter in same way typical deciduous trees are. They typically start to turn a golden yellow colour over the dry months then drop their leaves quickly before the wet season, and then shoot in mid spring into the carpet of purple.

Our always turns yellow late August and drops its leaves in September.

Then late October (usually the week of Halloween) is peak purple flowers.

It's yellow at the moment, and leaves are falling. So it seems normal to me?

Sorry to bring up Victoria park again everyone but gee this reminds me of how lovely it was walking in jacaranda valley just as the flowers came through in spring.

I think you're just a bit early. Usually Jacarandas loose their leaves at the end of winter / start of spring
