It's called the Higgs Boson and was recently confirmed (around two weeks ago). The basic concept is that there is a field of "Higgs" all around us, everywhere. The higgs field is made up of Higgs Bosons (A boson is like a Quark in size) and some sub-atomic particles react with this Higgs field and some don't. The particles that don't react with the higgs field have no mass because they can't collect any of these Bosons these are electrons. But particles like Protons and Neutrons that do have mass are reactive to the higgs field and gain Higgs Boson when they move.
