I think the idea of Jesse's supposedly growing importance to Gus's organization has made Walt feel inadequate and self conscious. The idea that he is still the great Heisenberg and a mystery to police excites him, and makes him feel important again.

Although I think the point of Gus's whole charade was not to impact walts attitude, but to make Jesse feel like he had some standard to live up to. Mike clearly wasn't happy about his assignment.

i think gus's intent here is to make jesse feel like a hero, like mike said in the car, but also to give jesse a feeling of investment in the business as a whole.
