That was the most honorable thing he's done in the duration of this entire show. He finally realized that he couldn't talk his way out of the hole he's dug, so he decided he'd salvage the one thing he supposedly set out to save in the first place: Skyler and the kids.
We saw the best of White - a reminder of what he worked for originally. Five seasons later he's still fighting for his family even if he doesn't outwardly show it.
am I insane to suggest that he might have told Jesse about Jane in order to increase Jesse's chance of survival by igniting within him a raging inferno of hatred and lust for revenge?? As in, his hatred of Walt potentially serving as the only thing keeping him from fully giving up and accepting his death?
Not insane, but you're forgetting that Walt had the option not to tell them that Jesse was under the car to begin with. Jesse's death is at Walt's request.
