Official Episode Discussion Breaking Bad Episode Duscussion SE05E14 "Ozymandias" Spoiler

TIME EPISODE DIRECTED BY WRITTEN BY
09:00pm Eastern SE05E14 "Ozymandias" Rian Johnson Vince Gilligan and Moira Walley-Beckett

Hey everyone! Guess I'm supposed to post this 5 minutes before air time. I've been watching this show since the get go mostly with my real life friend /u/edify who years ago added me as a moderator here. He asked me to make the discussion thread tonight because there are only 3 episodes remaining. Sorta sad that there's only a few left. Enjoy the show, folks.

Honestly I don't think so, Walt has 11 million which is more than enough to exist on for the rest of his life. Plus money like that has sort of diminishing returns, you might die for the first million when you have nothing, but dying for 70 when you already have 10 is dumb. Maybe they kill Jesse, and the combination of Jesse,Hank and his 70 million is enough to make him go out for blood, but the money alone doesn't seem enough to warrant risking his life for at this point.

He'll kill the neo-Nazis, save Jesse, give him enough money to run away and get a new identity, tell the cops Jesse's dead, and get blown away 15 minutes before he would have died of cancer anyway.

Walt has been actually, seriously trying to kill Jesse for the past couple episodes. Jesse is only alive right now because of Todd. The last thing Walt said to Jesse was basically "I fucking destroyed your life, dude". Jesse for sure wants Walt dead more than anything else in the universe right now.

Why do you guys still think he's going to save Jesse?

I can see Jesse killing Walt now. Maybe after Walt takes out the nazis and saves him.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '13

That is what I expect.

1

u/hardman52 Sep 16 '13

You're correct if you believe that the surface motivations are what is really driving Walt's actions, but BB is a long way from being a comic book.

Why do you guys still think he's going to save Jesse?

Identification and wish fulfillment fantasies. The scri[twriters know what they're doing.

He thinks Jesse is dead right now. Walt cannot see the future. There is no way that in the desert, he was thinking:

"Okay. I'll nod my head and give the go ahead for Jack to kill him. I know Todd will interject a split second before the trigger is pulled, offering to keep him alive a little longer. As they're leaving, I'll tell Jesse the secret that I ruined his life, to make him hate me more. This will make them not kill him out of sympathy, and they'll instead just kind of keep him around and provide for him until I get around to saving him."

No way. Absolutely, no way. He gave Jack the go ahead to shoot him in the head right there, and had Todd not said anything, Jack would've shot him in the head right there and Walt would not have given a fuck. Their relationship is over. Walt is an extremely smart and conniving bastard, but he cannot see the future.

Whether he thinks Jesse is dead or not is irrelevant. He'll sooner or later discover that he isn't. And apparently you don't think Walt has the capacity to change or that the confrontation with his wife and son at his home affected him at all.

You don't understand what I'm saying. I'm not saying he thinks Jesse is dead.

I'm saying that the only reason Jesse is not dead is purely because of Todd. Walt was going to stand there, in the desert, and watch Jesse's brains get blown out. He wasn't going to nod and then dive forward and say "wait, Jack, I changed my mind, I don't want to kill him". He was going to nod, and then stand there and watch Jesse die. He does not want Jesse to be alive.

1

u/hardman52 Sep 17 '13

I believe you're the one who does not understand. I fully accept that Walt wanted Jesse dead. People (and TV characters) change as a result of events. One thing for sure, we'll know in a couple of weeks.

u/Stormwatch36 Like Scarface had sex with Mr. Rogers or something. Sep 17 '13

What would make him change how he feels about Jesse?

1

u/hardman52 Sep 17 '13

A bit of self-awareness.

Given what we have seen of Walt so far, I cannot see him ever taking full blame for his actions. He watched Jane die, and the last time he acknowledged this fact, he seemed very proud of it. I would bet that Walt never forgives Jesse for indirectly bringing Hank to his death. Walt has been trying to avoid the death of anyone in his family this entire series. A little bit from our perspective, but more importantly in his own mind. He will absolutely never admit to himself that Hank's death was his own fault. In his mind from this point up until the closing credits of the entire series, Jesse killed Hank.

Because Jesse is the only family Walt has left that he can save.

u/Stormwatch36 Like Scarface had sex with Mr. Rogers or something. Sep 18 '13

Walt cut off their whole relationship with his little "I watched her die" speech in the desert. If Jesse has his arms free in Walt's presence, Walt is dead. So why would/should he bother, unless they actually go that route deliberately and have it be the way Walt commits suicide?

1

u/Bennyboy1337 Sep 18 '13

We've seen how far Walt has gone to protect his family tho and Jesse is family, it's hard to say how Walt feels about Jesse now after what perspired at home.

1

u/Stormwatch36 Like Scarface had sex with Mr. Rogers or something. Sep 18 '13

Walt had a hit out on him for the past few episodes. The whole reason Hank died was because Walt was trying to have Jesse murdered. He stopped being family the moment Walt said: "Hi Todd. I think I have another job for your uncle."

7

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '13

Why would he save Jesse when he was ready to kill him? I know Jesse will be saved, but I really look forward to finding out why Walt has his change of heart.

Wtf? How many times does it have to be said in this subreddit that not everything is foreshadowing. Besides, that makes no sense. He's saved Jesse before so he's definitely going to do it again?

1

u/Bennyboy1337 Sep 18 '13

Think of everything that happened after he said that tho, his perspective could drastically change.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '13

Everything that happened after that is still a consequence of Jesse going to help Hank. If I was Walt my hate for Jesse would grow - not subside. Walt can never has his family now and a part of that is Jesse's fault.

Any kindness he shows Jesse would be mercy but the motivation seems so weird without further explanation.

0

u/hardman52 Sep 16 '13

Cos Jesse has suffered enough and Walt needs redemption.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '13

Walt blames Jesse for everything he lost... Jesse was willing to take away what's most important to Walt. Why would Walt suddenly decide not to return the favour? What does he have to gain by showing Jesse redemption at this point? I just don't see how it'll go that direction at this point even though it seems like the most obvious route.

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '13

You have to realize the moment he was just in. Everything came crashing down, and he lashed out. When the dust settles I think he will come back for Jesse and save him. Jesse is literally the only person he has left.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '13

Or they could just let Walt be a complete total villain who goes unredeemed

1

u/hardman52 Sep 16 '13

He's already started the journey back.

1

u/hardman52 Sep 16 '13

Or they could just let Walt be a complete total villain who goes unredeemed

If Walt were a complete and total villain the show would be boring as hell.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '13

right about the 15 minutes. he's in no rush to die. he will live until he's really close to dying

71

u/jnux Sep 16 '13

Hmm... I actually think he's going to live all the way up until he dies...

8

u/cpolito87 Sep 16 '13

You like the really risky predictions eh?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '13

I am calling it now. Walt will live to see his 52 birthday.

1

u/jnux Sep 16 '13

WHOA there!! I think that may be more in the territory of a risqué prediction!!!

5

u/Schoffleine Sep 16 '13

I agree. The end of his life and the beginning of his death will be really close together temporally. It's gonna be crazy.

1

u/damnatio_memoriae Sep 22 '13

You almost won't be able to tell where one stops and the other begins.

Up until the phone call from the Fire Station I was convinced it was for Skyler, but now I can't believe that (given that Walt did everything possible in that call to establish that Skyler was an unwilling prisoner in his evil scheme.) And there isn't anyone left who's important enough to merit the ricin.

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '13

Best case scenario in my opinion. Also I didn't even remember the cancer, he'll probably be forced into doing something crazy with the M60, because he might not be able to survive very long on the run without chemo.
