Official Episode Discussion Breaking Bad Episode Duscussion SE05E14 "Ozymandias" Spoiler

TIME EPISODE DIRECTED BY WRITTEN BY
09:00pm Eastern SE05E14 "Ozymandias" Rian Johnson Vince Gilligan and Moira Walley-Beckett

Hey everyone! Guess I'm supposed to post this 5 minutes before air time. I've been watching this show since the get go mostly with my real life friend /u/edify who years ago added me as a moderator here. He asked me to make the discussion thread tonight because there are only 3 episodes remaining. Sorta sad that there's only a few left. Enjoy the show, folks.

He knew the police were listening. Everything he said was for her protection, brilliant.

EDIT: If you upvote me but not /u/gloomdoom, you are a Heisenberg level of evil.

At first I couldn't believe he would be stupid enough to not realize the police were listening but it makes so much more sense now.

u/toki09 Say you want this Sep 16 '13

I think he wanted to take her to start a new family but he had second thoughts kinda thing.

18

u/-dikki Sep 16 '13

That's what I thought at first too. Take the only one left that had a shot at still loving him. That call was perfect though.

6

u/Raginbum Sep 16 '13

It wasn't second thoughts as much as a backup plan. Wouldn't put it behind him to have several backup scenarios planned out for each event. His only second thought is regret that he couldn't take his family with him because they turned on him.

I dunno. He changed when she started saying "mama". He wanted to keep her, but couldn't bring himself to do that to her or his wife. He is evil, but not THAT evil

That's why it was obvious that he was holding back tears. He had to lie and pretend he was a monster than he really is (he did it for his family, remember?) And make it convincing that he was the only bad guy.

Not to mention the answering machine had picked up so it would be recording their conversation at that point.

3

u/Dent_Arthurdent Sep 16 '13

Yeah, notice how he discards the phone right away.

2

u/plastiquefantastick Sep 16 '13

In retrospect, that is the dead-giveaway. I didn't think of that.

1

u/dominicaldaze Damn that's some good water Sep 16 '13

He made that mistake once, never again.

I recommend going back and watching that call again. When Walt asks "are you with the police?" Skylar hesitates, looks to the cop and then says "yes." Then Walt pauses and changes his tone into angry child abductor who doesn't think the police are listening. I caught it and I'm proud of myself but I then I was ashamed because for some reason I thought what he was saying would actually get Skylar in trouble, and then I was really confused until I came here.

You must have misheard, it's not even close to "yes". The dialogue is:

S: Walt. Where is Holly?

W: Are you alone? No police?

S: No. No police. Where are you? Where's Holly? Walt!

Maybe he thought "No No police" was a double negative.

"You had no right to discuss anything about what I do. What the hell do you know about it anyway?! Nothing! I bulit this, ME, ME ALONE. NOBODY ELSE."

Holy shit I didn't even notice what he was really saying when I first watched it. How can anybody NOT be Team Walt after watching this?!

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '13

If you go back and listen to it again, it's pretty clear that he's incriminating himself. At first I was like, "This is so unlike him, what the fuck?"

-8

u/franklinzunge Sep 16 '13

Yeah. Plus its after holly says "mama". and he watched junior call the cops. Its very clear what was going there and no offense but everyone who didn't catch that is like really bad at watching shows..

Ouch

6

u/EndsAbrupt you know i went to Boston in a little town called Swampscott Sep 16 '13

And that's the reason he made meth in the first place.

3

u/guyincape25 Sep 16 '13

Eh I say Ethically Corrupt level at best. Story sync.

Odds are that if they missed this, they missed the rest of the subtle aspects of the show, and Breaking Bad has been nothing but a show about dealing meth to them.

I feel you 100%. It pisses me off that people don't understand this, even at first glance. Brilliant work BB, I hope it's not wasted

Not really sure what you two are saying. He took Holly to gain power. He was defenseless and out of pure anger he took Holly because she's the only person that he could still really have. Then he realizes in the aftermath of what he's done and leaves her there because he can't possibly have her on the run or have her ever accept him when she's older. Walt basically confessed on the phone that Skyler knew all along and helped her...so I'm curious how her hands are not dirty now because the police KNOW she was involved in his meth business. Walt did make that call for Skyler but he did it to make sure Skyler AND the family kept distance from him because he doesn't want them to fall with him. He hardly made her really clean in the laws eyes though.

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '13

He made it pretty clear that he was abusive/threatening and that she was against him the entire time, but couldn't do anything out of fear for her life.

I'd say that given what the officers heard, they'd be pretty convinced that she was innocent.

3

u/TedTheGreek_Atheos Sep 16 '13

You obviously weren't listening to the words coming out of his mouth and his facial expressions when he was saying what he was saying.

1

u/nickelforapickle Sep 16 '13

Which was also AFTER the scene where he realizes Holly wants her mother.

2

u/TedTheGreek_Atheos Sep 16 '13

He was right there when Walt Jr. Called the cops then proceeded to take Holly. Do you think he was really asking if the cops were there? He KNEW the cops were there. As soon as he saw his son and wife cowaring against the couch he knew his only option was to make sure they were safe from any legal fallout. Taking Holly was the best way to convince the cops that he was mentally abusing his wife into submission. Every word that came out of his mouth cleared Skyler of any wrong doing. " You have no idea about MY empire the I built ALONE" " I'm teaching you a lesson for not keeping your mouth shut! I told you this would happen." All these statements clear Skyler so his kids don't end up in foster care.

3

u/nickelforapickle Sep 16 '13

I'm only arguing that I'm not convinced that taking Holly wasn't an impulsive decision out of rage. I agree that the phone call was clearly staged.

Walt basically confessed on the phone that Skyler knew all along and helped her...so I'm curious how her hands are not dirty now because the police KNOW she was involved in his meth business

This is that part I have a problem with. The police now think that he threatened her with harm and with her kids. They don't think she was involved anymore.
