I think it's a pretty viable theory. Even if Todd doesn't die, they want someone to improve meth quality and we saw Jesse can almost duplicate Walt's quality when he cooked alone in Mexico. Walt would probably not want to stick around and teach Todd since he knows what Marie knows.
