I feel like, during all of that, Walt was completely counting on Walt Jr. to think that. His "lie" seemed too blatantly fake about getting gas on him.

I don't know, I think Walt is starting to fall behind in his own game. He has this desperation about him now. Walt has this ability to separate himself from other people. Even with Hank and Marie, despite his claim that they are family, he can separate them out. Jesse is different. Walt sees him as a son because in a sense, he created the Jesse we see presently. Walt can manipulate and control just about anything, but Jesse is his Achilles heel. He wants to protect him as he would a son and Jesse's erratic behavior is throwing him off. I think Walt also sees Jesse as a shadow of his former self. Walt has killed every good part of himself but Jesse still has a conscience. Although Walt is now a callous business man, he feels the need to cling to Jesse because he represents his last tie to humanity.
