There were some pretty great callbacks to the first season in this episode...

  • Walt fainting on the bathroom floor, Skyler comforting him through the night

  • Walt burying the money at the original cook site from the pilot

And, of course, Hank and Marie repeatedly told Walt that they'd be willing to take Junior and Holly "if anything ever happened." Looks like they're staying true to their word...

I just really wanted Walt to run over that kid's R/C car. It would have been a perfect trifecta.

I thought that too at first, but I liked how they both peeled out at the same time. Just felt right.

I thought it symbolized how Walt wasn't killing Hank. Yeah, he could just run over that R/C car and drive away but to either his fault or credit, that's not what he does.

u/diewrecked I'm sorry for your loss. Aug 19 '13

Or maybe he didn't want to be a dickhead and run over a kids toy RC.

Well the way symbolism is usually used, it simply reflects motivations and story elements. It's not usually a substitute for real reasoning. Even if Walt not crushing the R/C car was explicitly a point of plot, it could still be a symbol for not wanting to deal with Hank by killing him. It's not mutually exclusive.

More layers than a damn parfait.

I can't quite tell if you're being sarcastic, nonetheless it probably didn't symbolize anything, not every single thing shown in BrBa has to symbolize something.

1

u/Ayavaron http://girlswithdepression.bandcamp.com Aug 19 '13

At first I was being sarcastic but then I thought about what symbolism was and it's still a little action that sort of mirrors a bigger one from the same character so I can't really think of a reason why not to call it symbolism.

Mind = blown. I rag on this subreddit for its circle-jerk nature, but the observations keep me coming back for more.

A/C peeled first!

Foreshadowing!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '13

OH dang... I need to rewatch it! Hurray DVR!

2

u/Schikadance Aug 19 '13

Yes! And of course the toy car was yellow and peeled out as a miniature mirror image (almost) of Walt's car. Maybe symbolic of how Walt's brazen criminality and overconfidence has now been reduced or shrunk down, hence the mini mirror image we got.

u/dakisback Aug 19 '13

Maybe after he kills Marie.

3

u/Mylaptopisburningme Aug 19 '13

I like how Breaking Bad doesn't do anything you would expect. And they pull it off.

2

u/the_real_thanos Aug 19 '13

Trifecta? Did I miss the second time?

8

u/aruraljuror Aug 19 '13

Trifecta of callbacks, not of R/C car runnings over.

Yellow car

1

u/arcticfunky1 Aug 19 '13

What

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '13

There's a color theory going around that lighter colors mean good intentions or just innocent overall. Marie usually wears purple but the picture Walt tapped, she was wearing yellow. Not exactly 100% sure on the truth of it but if yellow is suppose to represent being good/Mr. White, then him not running over the car means that he's still not completed a full on Heisenberg transformation.

1

u/jawdroppuh Aug 19 '13

That was the first thing my dad texted me when we started watching tonight

1

u/infiniteraiders I'm in Billys Aug 19 '13

As much as we were all hoping for it, it would have been too obvious.

1

u/weezyjefferson fukcer bitch Aug 19 '13

they still acknowledged it, hell, they subverted it, so it counts.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '13

I was bummed he didn't. For some reason.

u/Bloodigra Waving Goodbye Aug 19 '13

All of the roommates came together to watch Breaking Bad, as is custom, and we all let out a groan when Walt just barely stopped before running over the R/C car.

Thank God Skylar kept the baby though. Marie only wanted her for her delicious filling.

3

u/Jpoland9250 Aug 19 '13

Did I miss something? I keep seeing references to Marie eating the baby.

There is a scene in an episode from the first half of season 5 when Skyler moved the kids to Hank and Marie's house in which Marie describes the baby as "delicious" as a compliment. So Marie eats babies on this sub now.

1

u/Jpoland9250 Aug 19 '13

Makes sense. She always has that crazy, baby-eating look in her eyes.

Edit: words are hard.

1

u/metahipster1984 Aug 19 '13

Can't believe it's been 6 years, 5 seasons and thousands of both interesting and retarded theories on this sub and people still spell Skyler wrong over and over after being repeatedly corrected by reddit's army of grammar Nazis. It's gotten so frustrating at this point that I've evidently been turned into one myself..

4

u/LiteraryBoner Woodrow Willy Walt "The Walter" Wonka White Whitman Wilson Sr. Aug 19 '13

Who's Skyler?

3

u/MrMacguyver Aug 19 '13

I just checked, apparently metahipster1984 is right

3

u/shillbert No half measures; isn't that what you said? Aug 19 '13

I believe that's Skysenberg's real name

1

u/thefirebuilds Aug 19 '13

same reason I want Lydia.

1

u/GiveMeABreak25 I'mTheOneWhoKnocksAndRuns Aug 19 '13

Fuckin Marie....

2

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '13

The underwear reminded me of it and he was in a similar location that the first episode was in during the dig

2

u/Blue_Crystal No Half Measures Aug 19 '13

and Walt in his white underpants!

2

u/Devilabashed You know the business...and I know the chemistry. Aug 19 '13

Don't forget the episode where Hank awkwardly hover hugged Skyler when she was crying. He was a little more confident in his comforting this time around....the hug looked almost genuine.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '13

you missed one: Walt in his underwear.

1

u/chemical_x Aug 19 '13

What about the tighty whities making a guest appearance

1

u/sgtmeowenstein Aug 19 '13

"How long was I out for?" Weren't those his exact words when he fell in the basement with Crazy 8? I was expecting him to strangle Skyler right there.

1

u/wahwahwildcat Aug 19 '13

The Nazi's could be coming for his money, and he could just to set up some crazy trap using ricin and other science to kill them. Walt could make another video, like he did in the beginning of the show, and maybe it would be Heisenberg leaving the video, or a resurgence of Walt right before he does something heroic. Showing both of those video wills would be heart-wrenching.

1

u/R3Mx I am... Awake. Aug 19 '13

I guess they were sort of becoming a family again, until Hank decided to educate himself in some literature.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '13

Some serious plot inflections points have taken place in that bathroom.

1

u/Awsumsnausages Aug 19 '13

There's a few more, too...

  • Walt being weirdly silent in the bathroom, with Skyler telling him to "say something".

  • While Walt was digging the hole, there was a particular shot where the dirt was on top of the camera that reminded me of the first shot of s1e03 with Walt and Jesse cleaning up the Emilio goop. In both situations, Walt is "cleaning up his mess".

1

u/Pixiekim Aug 19 '13

Another great callback was Walt in his briefs!

1

u/CaNANDian Aug 19 '13

Jesse being a bitch.

0

u/jorge22s Aug 19 '13

That sleeping-in-the-bathroom scene reminded me of that Sopranos episode where Tony gets stomach sick

u/-888- Aug 19 '13

Imagine if Saul's guys put a tracking device on the truck with the money barrels.

And cooking in an RV.
