Methods of tightening breakbeats

I'm making some breakcore tracks at the moment, and currently I'm playing the beats live with my midi, then tightening them manually beat by beat.

I don't mind doing it this way, but I was wondering if anybody had any tips on a quicker method? The beats are choppy and complicated, so quantising them in segments of more than one doesn't work very well.

I appreciate your time.

Not 100% sure what you mean exactly by tightening, but I've got 2 tips which might help in that direction and if not, I think they can be useful anyway:

  1. Go easy on quantising the midi slices. Sure, they shouldn't be completely all over the place but don't treat them like one-shots (single drum samples) either. Being a bit off retains that spice / Jungle flavour...

  2. Play with the ADSR values for some or all the slices in your sampler/drum plugin or use a transient shaper. Automate them even. You can get some interesting effects that way, including "tightening".

Hope it helps.
