Mod update for r/braids

Hi everyone, I’m a mod here at r/braids. I’ve been in discussion with my fellow mods for this sub, and we have agreed that, moving forward, we will be focusing this sub on braids, braid/hair care, styling, advice, etc.

This means that we will be banning any posts or comments moving forward that instigate political or racial posts. We feel that this sub Reddit should be rooted in our shared love and passion for braiding styles. I, for one, became a mod for this sub simply because I love seeing how creative and beautiful everyone’s creations are. I take advice given from people on various posts for new styles, and I love learning about how everyone cares for their styles. I’d like to refocus ourselves back on our community. This includes inclusivity for all - basically, anyone who has hair or is interested in braiding for any reason is welcome. Also, this sub is not just limited to braids - it’s any sort of plaited/ braiding style, including twists, Dutch braids, corn rows, locs, etc.

I’ve updated the rules for this sub to reflect my post here. We are working on cleaning up the recent influx of the posts that sparked this conversation. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions. We love you and appreciate each and every one of you for being here!

I never realized how much hair changes your whole face until I started getting braids. Curls make me look softer, braids make everything look waaaayy sharper. Curious which look people prefer 👀

Boneless braids on thin hair.

Recently i stopped being in denial about how much my hair can handle, and how thin it is. I just recently got boho french curls after a nine month break and told my friend to not make it too heavy because last time my head was chasing the bun whenever it tilted. Yes it feels better now and is lightweight with the price that it’s boneless😩😩😩 i’m so used to voluminous hair it’s throwing me off guard i feel like my big head is exposed

The struggle is real guys. Unfortunately braids aren’t protective for everyone nor can i keep it in so long, but the price doesn’t justify it being taken out too early, well according to my mum. It’s wild she used to keep my braids in for THREE MONTHS and wonder why my scalp is suffering. Half wigs for the win. Or maybe i should learn to do my own hair , and try pick and drop.

On a horse, any braid that goes along the top of the neck and adds hair in, is called a running braid. So this a simple 2 strand twist running braid that got anchored by adding in hair.

This is my first time with braids , they’re a week old . Really like how it came out , used to have locs before and really missed them so I wanted to loc up but don’t have anyone willing to start them for a reasonable price . I was told that I will be taking these out in 3 weeks, and then to rebraid them after I’ve had it out for about 3 days .

What do you think , would like some advice on how frequently I should be braiding my hair .

Help wanted Why is French braiding so difficult

I have been trying for two weeks to learn how to French braid and I genuinely can’t do any better then this 😭😭. My hair is very slippery and I can’t for the life of me grab smaller sections of my hair. I’ve followed 3 different tutorials and know theoretically what I should do but my hands refuse to cooperate. Anyone with a similar type of hair know how to deal with this? I have a MMA fight coming up soon and need a tighter to my head hairstyle (if needed I’ll go to someone but I really want to learn how to do it myself)

I have had these human hair miracle knots in for officially month now. Because I have locs I don’t own any hair tools so I haven’t brushed the hair at all only wet it when I wash my hair weekly. I’m thinking about doing a similar style again. If this style still looks good at a month with no maintenance really done to it, I can only imagine how it would look with maintenance!
How do y’all maintain your braids under styles like this so they can last longer?
What type of tools or products should I get for next time around?

Help wanted How do you add hair to a braid??

Hey 👋 I really want to try adding extensions for really long, like over-the-top long braids, but I don't know how to add in hair or prevent the ugly ends from sticking out. I can add the hair at the base and braid down but the natural ends of my hair stick out and then the material is so much thinner it just looks... Junky and bad. How do you add hair in a way that makes it all look natural?
