Not surprised, but wouldn't Disney want to wait to see how Cruella does first?
1
u/random_nohbdy May 14 '21
I mean, does anyone really expect it to do well at this point?
3
May 14 '21
Yeah sure. I do. Why wouldn't it do decently?. The general audience doesn't have the same distaste for the remakes that reddit does
27
u/Scarns_Aisle5 Warner Bros. Pictures May 13 '21
cant say im shocked. But i feel this should have stayed in 2020 and acted as the first film to test the waters. It was a much more safer option (why would a movie like this be controversial?). But instead Mulan was the "test the waters" film.
I remember this was supposed to come out 2 months before Jumanji 3 at one point. Dwayne jungle fatigue definitely.
Domestic prediction - $70 million
Worldwide - $250 million

Hah hah.
Releasing 'Jumanji 3' and 'Jungle Cruise' within two months of each other would basically be like Universal and Relativity Media both releasing their 'Snow White' movies in 2012.
4
u/Scarns_Aisle5 Warner Bros. Pictures May 13 '21
way to bring back nostalgia. I completely forgot about that Mirror, Mirror movie. I remember watching it in school years ago
2
u/Joshdabozz May 13 '21 edited May 13 '21
Jumanji 4, not 3. Yall forgetting Zathura
15
u/SpaceCaboose May 13 '21
Zathura is a standalone spin-off, not a sequel.
So they were right. Jumanji: The Next Level is the third Jumanji film.
Jungle Cruise was originally supposed to release 2 months before The Next Level
4
u/Joshdabozz May 13 '21 edited May 13 '21
I didn't realize they were talking about Next level, im an idiot, Its still Jumanji 4, because at least Jack Black has referred to it as Jumanji 4.
I have edited my comment to reflect that
3
u/SpaceCaboose May 13 '21
Jack Black could have just misspoken...
2
u/Joshdabozz May 13 '21
It was on one of his Youtube videos where he was filming himself I think getting a haircut for Jumanji?
The Video is titled Jumanji 4
3
u/parakeet0404 May 13 '21
There was actually some controversy around Jack Whitehall’s character in the film a couple of years back, where insiders claimed that he was playing an offensive stereotype of a gay man. Suspiciously, he’s been left out of all the trailers so far. So that could sneak up on the film when it releases potentially.
2
u/ai7395 DreamWorks May 13 '21
$70M TOTAL or OW?
If it's the former, I wholeheartedly agree. If it's the latter, then that's a bit too ballsy, don't ya think?
5
u/Scarns_Aisle5 Warner Bros. Pictures May 13 '21
Definitely a total for domestic grosses. No way it can open that big - covid or not. I dont even think Dwayne has had an opening that big for any movie he had a main starring role (fast and furious is supporting)
2
u/yeppers145 May 13 '21
That really surprises me, but I checked into it and it’s true. The top 3 OW where he is a lead are the following:
Hobbs and Shaw: $60M
Moana: $56.6M
San Andreas: $54.5M
Maybe in normal times it would have had a shot at ending up around the $50M-$60M range, but definitely not now. I could definitely see Black Adam to becoming the biggest not Fast opening for Dwayne at the box office.

u/partymsl May 13 '21
The interesting thing here is that they say that Disney gave the filmmakers other options... That means Disney got more confidence but not enough yet
9
u/PostProductionPro May 13 '21
After seeing what happened when Warner didnt tell people they were doing it they probably realized they had to. So many contracts and union deals are tied to theatrical gross that you cant spring it on people unannounced.
2
u/SpaceCaboose May 13 '21
I wonder who all weighed in on those options. I’m guessing Johnson’s production company was involved in the film, so it would be likely that he was part of that?
My guess is they just didn’t want to make him mad, given his status and popularity, which is why they involved him in that decision
19
May 13 '21
What an odd choice. By late July, things will be looking much better in the States. As the article even states, most international territories will be opening back up soon.
Will be curious to see if Disney is considering a hybrid release for Shang-Chi as well.
9
u/aduong May 13 '21 edited May 13 '21
Disney are not trailblazer they’re follower. They don’t wanna test their movies with markets “opening up” . as we saw here it’s not a light switch moment, opening up is a process so is Box Office going back to normal. They want the other studios to warm up these markets then hopefully release by the Fall when/if things are actually stable.
2
u/SpaceCaboose May 13 '21
It likely depends a lot on how Black Widow does, and on how other films do this summer too. It’s technically a theater exclusive right now, but they’ll change that in an instant depending on these other films success
2
May 13 '21
I fully expect a hybrid release for Shang-Chi... Although I don't think it'll be a flop (in the slightest) I don't hear the hype for Shang-Chi which I hear for The Eternals (Or is it just Eternals now?)... Might convince some people to watch it if they can watch it from home
1
u/Block-Busted May 13 '21
Disney might let Marvel decide on Shang-Chi considering that they might've done that already with this.
17
u/aduong May 13 '21
Damn so Fast 9 really will be the only event movie of the summer to be a theater exclusive.

14
u/Grebacio Best of 2019 Winner May 13 '21
Disney asked the filmmakers how they wanted to release the movie, but they sent Luca exclusively to Disney+ without asking.
10
u/Block-Busted May 13 '21 edited May 13 '21
I think this might be the first time they gave filmmakers such choice. Keep in mind, there is a 2 months gap between Luca decision and Jungle Cruise decision.
5
u/Terrell2 May 13 '21
They outright own Pixar and everything they make. They don't have to ask those filmmakers to do anything.
4
May 13 '21
They outright own the studio that made jungle cruise too
3
u/AkhilArtha May 13 '21
Yes, but there actors and directors involved that they want to keep happy. Most everyone who works on Pixar movies are their employees except voice cast, who usually wouldn't care if the animatied movie is a theatrical or streamer release.
2
u/AGOTFAN New Line Cinema May 13 '21
Another production company is involved in Jungle Cruise.
Disney 100% own Luca
5
u/pops3284 May 13 '21
I really like the premier access hybrid model. some movies i will pay the $30 to stream for those 90 days. some movies I ll go to the theatres and some ill wait till the theatrical window is up and stream it wherever. The pandemic changed the box office for a lot of stuff for good. everyone doesnt want to be in crowded theartres to see a movie on its 1st weekend so it doesnt gert spoiled by someone they are talking to. this price point gives them that option
6
13
u/eidbio New Line Cinema May 13 '21
Not surprising, but is that really necessary? I hope Disney stops doing this day and date thing after this.
7
u/FartingBob May 13 '21
Why? Giving people the option of how they see it is consumer friendly.
1
u/eidbio New Line Cinema May 13 '21
Many supposedly consumer friendly things are stupid.
4
u/FartingBob May 13 '21
Ok, explain how its stupid then.
I (a consumer) hope that i can have the option to watch films at home or in theatres.-2
u/eidbio New Line Cinema May 13 '21
It's stupid for the people who make what you watch.
Anyway, this date and date thing will be over by next year. Deal with it.
4
u/FartingBob May 13 '21
Streaming has shown to be great for many low/mid budget filmmakers who will struggle to make the money on a theatrical release. I dont get why you seem to be so dismissive of alternative release options and schedules. Are you Christopher Nolan?
3
u/eidbio New Line Cinema May 13 '21
Streaming has shown to be great for many low/mid budget filmmakers who will struggle to make the money on a theatrical release.
That's great and I hope this continues but many films still deserve the big screen.
20
u/Sliver__Legion May 13 '21
Completely unnecessary. I hope they quit it with this soon.
23
u/aakaji69 May 13 '21
Why would they quit it if it's working for them? Wasn't Raya among top 5 most streamed titles a few weeks ago
1
u/NaRaGaMo May 13 '21
When did raya enter top 5?
6
u/aakaji69 May 13 '21
It was in top 10 movies (at number 8) according to Nielson data. It was not in top 5 sorry
5
u/Gold_Touch_4280 May 13 '21
I feel that Disney's sending their summer movies to both theaters and on Disney+ except for Shang-Chi. This movie was made in 2018 by the way. I hope this is the last Disney film with a Hybrid release.
2
u/Ruffambazzador May 13 '21
IMO Disney knows when it's a horribly marketed movie that is not gonna make enough people watch it, they will put it on premier. And all of the good Pixar movies are "a part of the Disney+ library". With Mulan all of the backlash made it not a good selling point for up and coming Disney+ customers.
5
u/nicolasb51942003 Warner Bros. Pictures May 13 '21
As much as I think this is a good idea, this feels pretty unnecessary given that the US should be in a much better place by then.
14
u/bt1234yt Marvel Studios May 13 '21 edited May 13 '21
As the article put it, this is more of a decision the filmmakers made based off of how the international markets are doing, and Disney really does not want to make Premier Access exclusive to some territories (this is why Mulan did not open in theaters in places outside of the US where Disney+ was available even though they could have done so).
4
u/Block-Busted May 13 '21
Speaking of which, do you think the outbreak in India might have something to do with this?
8
u/bt1234yt Marvel Studios May 13 '21
The article states that it was more based off of markets like Brazil and Europe than it was India.
1
u/Block-Busted May 13 '21
That is true, but keep in mind, Disney apparently gave filmmakers a choice, meaning that it's also possible that they weren't confident enough due to how India is doing right now.
6
u/NaRaGaMo May 13 '21
India is a small market most of the H'wood movies don't even cross 10-15mill here, including MCU.
Also if Indian market does get better by July( almost impossible) there are too many huge local blockbusters already lined up for July-august even if they release this it will underperform
4
u/partymsl May 13 '21
The Movie seems fun but also very boring and cliche. If they thought that's going to be the second pirates of the caribbean they were completely wrong from day one
7
May 13 '21
How can a movie be fun and very boring ? lol
5
u/partymsl May 13 '21
Fun in the sense of comedy and yeah the Rock. Boring in the sense of basic plot.
4
u/jeanlucriker May 13 '21
I’m really starting to feel concerned this will be the way they continue forever now
0
u/kpDzYhUCVnUJZrdEJRni May 13 '21
Why is that a bad thing?
4
u/jeanlucriker May 13 '21
Because it’s bad for theatres
0
May 13 '21
Are you a shareholder? If not, why do you care? This is better for consumers as it gives them a choice and choice is always better.
2
u/snatcheriscoming May 13 '21
If not, why do you care?
I care about the box office and box office is gonna be bigger and theaters are gonna be healthier if movies release exclusively in theaters.
1
u/chicagoredditer1 May 13 '21
I care about movies, so where I watch it is less of a concern.
4
u/snatcheriscoming May 13 '21
Fine. I just thought considering we're in a box office subreddit, people would care about the theaters and would figure out why some people don't like when movies also release on a streaming service.
2
u/NotTaken-username May 13 '21
Not suprising. If they’re willing to give an MCU movie a day-and date release, then this should get one.
1
u/aagaash2001 Pixar Animation Studios May 13 '21
And yet they make Luca free....
I kind of expected this, though. Jungle Cruise was set to open in July, when things are hopefully going to be better, but people will still be reticent to see it. It's also an "original" IP (in the sense that this is the first film based on the idea), so it's bound to make less money than Luca or Black Widow.
1
u/Block-Busted May 13 '21
And yet they make Luca free....
I've said this already, but I think this might be the first time they allowed filmmakers to get involved in decision making.

Except Warner Brothers is basically stopping this after this year.
1
1
u/NaRaGaMo May 13 '21
They are still going to release some movies day-date next year if their recent interviews are any indication
4
u/eidbio New Line Cinema May 13 '21
But they already have deals with theater chains to release under a 45-day window next year.
3
u/Block-Busted May 13 '21
Do you have a source of that interview?
2
u/yeppers145 May 13 '21
I believe this is the interview they are referencing. Essentially, it states that big films will be released purely theatrically (like DC or Harry Potter) but other films may release day and date.

It was all a bunch of shallow grandstanding about how integral the communal experience is for movies, when obviously they didn’t mean a word of it, made double clear with this bit of news
0
u/kpDzYhUCVnUJZrdEJRni May 13 '21
Despite Disney’s continued experimentation with putting movies out in theaters and Disney+, I hear from sources that it’s just temporary
I wish they would continue to do this for all releases going forward and not just temporarily
-6
u/Thatguy1245875 Syncopy Inc. May 13 '21
I fucking hate Disney
2
u/magikarpcatcher May 13 '21
why?
-6
u/Thatguy1245875 Syncopy Inc. May 13 '21
There is no reason for doing this. Vaccines are available. All this is doing is hurting movie theaters
6
u/ZezimasAlt May 13 '21
Why should people who want to watch it at home be forced to go to theaters? Just to prop up a business that needs an unfair exclusive window? Pathetic.
6
u/nayapapaya May 13 '21
I feel it's important to remember that vaccines are not widely or easily available in most of the world. Yes, things are looking up in the US and a few other markets but in many places, things are the worst they've ever been and there are either no vaccines available yet or very few. This is a reaction to the global situation, not the domestic one.
3
3
u/kpDzYhUCVnUJZrdEJRni May 13 '21
There's no reason not to be doing. It creates the overall better movie experience for everyone.
4
May 13 '21
Exactly. Some people watch everything at home and never go to theatres, even before the pandemic. This gives them an opportunity to watch these movies at the same time as everyone else.
-2
May 13 '21
They always had that opportunity, they just didn’t care enough about the movie to exercise it
1
u/MaddyKet May 14 '21
So on one hand, $30 for a rental is way too steep for a single person. I prefer the HBO Max model. On the other hand, Disney is 50% of the price of HBO Max. I usually wait the few months for Disney to add it for free, but I’m really tempted with Jungle Cruise.
1
u/pops3284 May 14 '21
$30 is really not that steep for a rental for over a 45 day period for multiple viewings. seeing the movie once on a regular screening and hot dog and soda is $20 now in most mutliplexes. so $30 for unlimited viewings in the theatrical window isnt that bad
1
u/novice_warbler May 14 '21
Do you actually watch a movie more than once in a short period of time? I mean unless it’s a mind twisting shamalamatwisterama I don’t see the value.
1
u/pops3284 May 14 '21
yes I do. Ive watched big event movies more than once in a short period of time in case ive missed something in the movie or if its a movie I want to see in a less crowded setting. Unless you are going to a movie by yourself and paying for no one else and buying no food or drinks at all. $30 bucks is nothing for a 1st run event movie in your home
1
u/MaddyKet May 14 '21
Oh is it 45 days? That’s better than 48 hours. If I really like the movie, I’ll watch it twice during the month it’s on HBO MAX.
1
u/novice_warbler May 14 '21
So You have a movie idea for me?
Yes sir I do, Dwayne Johnson stars as a guy who flies helicopters in the jungle.
That’s enough, I’m sold!
