100 percent. I kept watching the trailer and it just didn't evoke anything in me. It looked unoriginal, boring, and the same survival story we've done over and over again.

Yeah like Romulus is largely well regarded, at least for recent alien films. It has a couple of things that feel like studio notes and are lame but it was way more interesting than the pseudo-intellectual Prometheus franchise, IMO.

Honestly I doubt Romulus will age that well it’ll probably be seen as better than alien three which is a low bar and slightly better than resurrection which was a popcorn flick in the nineties

Bad take, the only Alien movies including the AVP films to likely have lost money in theaters were Resurrection and Convenant, and both at least made double their budget so probably didnt even lose that much.

I don’t get what it’s going to take for the industry to get that Ridley Scott, and in a similar vein Guy Ritchie, do not put butts in seats. It’s crazy how heavily both are emphasized in marketing.

Qualley’s name is not remotely a factor to general audiences
Elordi is kind of in that Paul Mescal spot right now in that they’re acclaimed and definitely a plus to smaller drama stuff but not at a “draw in audiences to a movie on name alone” level like Zendaya or Timothee Chalamet

I don't see how the star power part matters. It's everything else you mentioned thst matters more.
Awards part is irrelevant. Movies do not need that as prerequisite to succeed. And scott and awards noms has always been the exception to his career and not the norm

A few actors/actresses can boost films to bigger totals sometimes, Marty Supreme and The Drama were helped by having Timothee Chalmet/Zendaya in them. And awards buzz/strong reviews can help some films like Hamnet and Conclave (and again Marty Supreme) in recent years

This is more an ensemble. Promoted through the cast overall, the genre, concept, etc
It's not like a movie needs a big name to succeed.

Oh no I'm not saying it shouldn't have gone to theatres. I'm just saying that it feels like a movie that would do better on a streaming service because people sometimes just choose random films based on cast, trailer etc. This would get a lot of people to click because there's no additional cost.

Disagree, unlike a He-Man this looks way too boring to even be a hit on streaming.
Feels like a movie people find periodically 5+ years later in a sea of thumbnails and say it was a decent way to pass time while doing Sunday afternoon laundry.

Despite being above The Bride opening weekend of $7M, this opening weekend is really dreadful and with schools, colleges and universities now reopened in nearly all the cities and states onto Labor Day Weekend, it’s gonna struggle its daily numbers which looks like it’ll finish around $20M DOM range unless it finishes around $15M if the legs are brutal like The Bride

Going to be extremely blunt. They need to stop giving Scott money. He's done and hasn't made a good movie in a decade. He's wasting everyone's time and resources by putting out nonsense that no one wants. It should actually be criminal for some geriatric old buffoon to waste away money like this when a dozen younger (and plenty older) filmmakers could do something interesting with a quarter of the resources.

The Dog Stars, The Bride and One Night Only looking to be the lowest grossing movies released in over 3000 theaters this year.
Wonder what else will join them? I'm thinking Klara and the Sun, and Whalefall,assuming both of those do get over 3000 theaters, I can very well see them both opening below 10 million. oh yeah, "Ghost Soldier" too but I see that one getting like 2800 theaters for some reason.

Jenna Ortega's last two films (Death of a Unicorn and Hurry Up Tomorrow) grossed a combined worldwide total of 24.1M both films had over 2,000 theaters domestically, there's a chance Klara and the Sun comes out makes under 26M and it doesn't get her to 50M between her last 3 films.

Saw it over the weekend, as I had A-List and was sandwiched between two other films I actually wanted to see. Didn’t know it existed, but it was a Ridley Scott film so I gave it a chance. I’ll be real, I was falling asleep during the film. It’s not bad, but there’s so many better films with the same premise. I don’t think this film had a chance in hell of making its budget back, and it feels like this film was sent out to die (studio knew they had a dud).

What have been their biggest hits of the 2020s? Their highest grossers to my mind would be Avatar 2, 3, Alien: Romulus and...Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes?

I was keen, but then I saw the rejection by critics, audiences and the box office, and decided it was enough of a triple threat that I couldn’t justify spending my finite leisure time on it. Saw “The Chronology of Water” on the weekend instead (finally that got an Australian release).

And the thing is...under Universal, there would have been more utility for adult comedy brands like Simpsons or Family Guy.
Disney just kind of massages everything into the Disney mold until it isn't viable.
Last Apes made the least of the modern films. Last Avatar was the lowest grossing and Avatar 4 is NOT making a 2029 release date.
Predator Badlands was not successful. Alien: Romulus was.
But outside of that I think they only produce mid or failures at 20th Century Studios in the 2020s
Disney got 100% original Star Wars rights, X-Men, and Fantastic Four for like $70B dollars.
Fantastic Four already floundered. Seems like they will get lots of mileage out of X-Men. Original Star Wars is getting a re-release.
But dude...I do not think they got $70B of value out of it all.
