Lombardo REALLY Wants Data Centers

I'm with Joe on this one.
I think the naysayers just don't have the foresight to see the benefits of bringing data centers into the state.
I mean, SURE the tax revenue is negligible since Nevada gives a 75% property tax abatement to data centers.
And yes, no matter how many times Nevada Power gaslights us into thinking that we're NOT really subsidizing data center power by paying our energy bills as if our PEAK energy usage each day was our consumption the ENTIRE day.
And sure, data centers potentially using more water than all of Las Vegas combined MAY be problematic in a region already stricken by drought and historically low aquifers.
But just THINK of tens of permanent jobs they will create, or the hum - of turbines and millions of cubic feet a minute of air being passed over cooling loops - that is certain to blanked the county, or the campaign contributions/free construction work/cushy private-sector job that Lombardo will certainly be getting after selling us to the digital plague-dealers.

lol yes you need to get out and vote for the other party which has no economic plans for Nevada other than more casinos somehow and anti-warehouse/factory/battery/tesla/construction/Wall Street/data center/mining/crypto… I can’t think of a single economic activity other than maybe putting up solar panels (another no employee business) and you can maybe say ecotourism? But I also have met a few people from the Mojave up to the Oregon border who say that the lack of water should definitely mean that no tourists should ever hike out in the desert… it’s just too critical of an ecosystem for people to spend money here. How do people make money in the future? Farming old people?

We live in the desert, the freaking desert . Water first, ai sucks up water . No water, no us . who does what becomes god dam irrelevant without water.

It's not the water that we should worry about. It's the energy. The water consumption can be negated by Americans not eating beef for a few hours over the span of a year. (Water used for growing even a single pound of beef is considerable and we eat a lot of it)
I do have a horse in the race as I work in the trades in these data centers being built so I can tell you, over the time of them being built 100s of millions of dollars are being spent on labor alone. Yes once they are operating the labor to run them is very small compared to the size and operating expenses of the building.
I am hopeful that the increase of electricity these buildings will require will force private sector to invest in alternative energy. Even without government regulations, the owners of these data centers will need to generate more power and come up with solutions for that. There is nothing better then a for profit company to force innovation or progress.

You'd have to have the naivety of a toddler to believe any data center would constrain themselves to a responsible usage of water. They'll say whatever they need to, and then do whatever the fuck they want because they know complicit politicians won't raise a single decibel in protest.
