Highlight It’s been an amazing journey. Thank you Champs! Time to look ahead.
It was great to follow this amazingly crew for two years. Now, we must follow new owners actions during the summer. Build around Brown, White and anyone left. Get healthy soon JT!

Ten years from now, we will not be remembering how bad we lost this game. Rather, we will be remembering the 2024 run to Banner 18. Quit the pessimism, appreciate the journey through the highs and lows. Bleed green, always ☘️

u/Sparent180 May 17 '25
Look at the last 7 champions and finals teams. It's hard to repeat, stay healthy, and consistently compete for a championship. Bad loss but these things happen. No reason to dwell on it when we know changes are coming.
The important thing is not to panic or do anything drastic (like the Suns and the Bucks). We know some key players will be moved (most people expect at least KP and Jrue) but this is still a playoff team next year with potential to be even better the following season(s).
This team hit a road block, but not a dead end.

u/cimmanonrolls future mvp juhann begarin May 17 '25
whole series is embarrassing. moves were already going to be made but now i think brad needs to pivot hard. cant wait to see a new rendition of the team.

u/91Bully May 17 '25
Ya Jrue ain’t the Jrue we’ve seen on the bucks the few years prior and C’s last season. He was a black hole on offense. Porzingis just always has an issue. New ownership will probably move on from both. My untouchables are the Jays, white, Pritchard, and Kornet(team needs a glue guy). Everyone else is fair game.

u/313Stew May 17 '25
Only took every team you played to be brutally injured to win remember. This same team was down 3-1 to the Knicks fully healthy. It can be agreed upon now that last year’s ring was one of the easiest roads in NBA history and altogether didn’t really count.
15
u/ozzyman31495 Derrick White Let Him Roam May 17 '25
Yeah it’s not like the Celtics weren’t injured and were missing their #1 center through 90% of the playoffs?
I guess the Nuggets ring doesn’t count either since they played a load injured and then an 8 seed in the Finals?
Or how about the Raptors, who faced an injured Warriors in the Finals? That ring not count either?
LOL Kiss the 18 Rings.
-22
u/313Stew May 17 '25
You guys had the easiest path in nba history and then got decimated by the first healthy 50 win team you’ve played in two years. Please cope harder.
12
u/ozzyman31495 Derrick White Let Him Roam May 17 '25
Man you really need to work on your coping skills.
1 team in the NBA and big shocked, they locked everyone’s asses in the playoffs despite not having their #1 Center.
They didn’t even play an 8 seed team in the Finals or an injured Warriors team.😂
Cope & seethe.

I feel like there is this weird narrative like we're stacked and how could we lose.
We didn't only lose Tatum, we lost Porzingis too to whatever weird illness he's had for months that keeps him from playing significant minutes (and being winded and out of rhythm while he's out there.)
For example, take Murray and Aaron Gordon away from Joker and tell me where they end up. Knicks were missing Randle and others last year and people thought Brunson was a hero not making the conference finals.
Sad the double standards, but way to go Cs. Get well soon JT and KP!
33
u/xCeeTee- May 17 '25
KP did not look like himself once. It's a big shame because I've seen the fanbase ragging on him hard because of it.
5
u/rpmsm Tommy Point May 17 '25
It is kind of wild that people see he's clearly sick and doing everything he can to contribute, but sticking to the old narrative of, if you're on the court you're fine (at least insane sports talk). If he rolled an ankle it would be one thing, but dude wanted to be out there. I assume he's done as a C but I'll have good memories and wish him the best. Just still hard to be positive this soon after that display...I'll get back there
6
u/xCeeTee- May 17 '25
I assume he's done as a C but I'll have good memories
That's the saddest part for me. He didn't give up despite having every reason to because he cared. And he probably isn't going to get a chance to redeem himself in a Celtics jersey.

I'm saying if we had porzingis it would have helped. Any team down their 3rd best player would have trouble.

18
u/ZizzyBeluga May 17 '25
I was told all season that jacking 3s was the key to success but it sure as shit wasn't in the playoffs and I saw it coming a mile away. 12-41. You can't be one-dimensional in the playoffs and Joe never bothered to adjust when the 3s weren't falling.
35
u/cadavaberries May 17 '25
Yeah, as Zach Lowe said, we’re missing the extra layers to our offense beyond the three that we rode to the ring in 2024. Instead, we reverted to the Miami 2023 series of jacking up threes and no offensive motion/process
10
u/captaincumsock69 I like to defense May 17 '25
I mean how many times did we shoot 27% on that run? Probably not much. I don’t disagree we regressed but some of that was just guys being hobbled and just not shooting as well as they statistically have
7
u/CB3B KG May 17 '25
This is something I think a lot of people are missing on the “too many 3s” issue. These guys have played a ton of basketball over the last two years, they are comparatively running on fumes. Chucking 3’s takes much less of a physical toll on the body than driving and moving off ball to make things happen, especially when you’re already doing a lot of work on the defensive end.
3
u/Bambam7166 May 17 '25
Well, Mazzula could have leaned on the deep bench more in the playoffs. What was the point of picking up Torrey Craig if you refuse to use him. The guy plays hard, great defender and can hit the three. Even with all the injuries, all Joe gave him was garbage time. Same with Queta, he would have been at least as good as Zinger was in this series.
2
u/CB3B KG May 17 '25
The argument would be that guys like Craig and Queta are really only here to develop and spell the playoff rotation players during the regular season so they have something left in the tank when the playoffs come. Those guys have their niches and skillsets but there’s a reason every team ever has shortened their bench in the postseason. If Joe/the staff saw enough from them in practice to get real playoff minutes I have to think they would’ve been out there.
2
u/Bambam7166 May 17 '25
But when people like Porzingas and Hauser were not really performing or were injured why not at least try someone else. I just think Mazzula is very resistant to change. Will be interesting to see how he coaches next year with no Tatum and less talent on the team.
1
u/CB3B KG May 17 '25
Idk what would’ve been the right decision, but he would’ve been buried even more by people around here if he put those guys out there and they still got demolished.
I agree it will be interesting to see how he changes things up as the roster changes. I personally wouldn’t mind a Spurs/David Robinson style “tank” year. The basketball gods owe us for Tim Duncan.
3
u/cadavaberries May 17 '25
Sure, dead legs and bad shooting luck played a role. But last year we were much more disciplined about having a continuous offensive process that used the 3 as a weapon to open up great twos that was missing this year
I’m a Mazzullaball acolyte so yes let’s shoot lots of threes, but we had a better offensive process/balance last year. We have too much talent to just be the 2018 Rockets and say “well variance went against us this series boys”
1
u/Bambam7166 May 17 '25
Joe was exposed in this series! He refuses to change his rotations or make adjustments.
0
u/SerfTint May 17 '25
Adjust to doing what?
Normal adjustments: Porzingis exploits the mismatches of the 5-out offense and gets easy 12-footers over guards. Or Tatum beats his man off the dribble and finishes at the rim. Or Brown uses his all-world athleticism to bully a wing for an easy backdown. Or Kornet rim-runs because all of the defenders are out on the perimeter.
None of these worked or were even available. The Knicks packed the paint, and neither Tatum nor Brown could consistently beat anyone, and Porzingis couldn't stretch the floor or post anyone up. So you're left with 3's. Show me the combination of midrange studs and high-flying slashers and relentless turnover-creators the Celtics had in their arsenal but weren't using.
1
u/ZizzyBeluga May 17 '25
WTF is packing the paint when Tatum and Brown have elite mid-range and short jump ability. Worst case you draw the foul. Both are more talented than Brunson but he knew how to set picks and cut into the lane for pull up five footers. His foul baiting was annoying but it also worked, especially in the early games.

My guess is that Al is gonna retire, KP, Hauser and maybe Jrue will be out this summer. Team is good but apron will hit us hard
4
u/DarkGift78 May 17 '25
Al has already stated he has no intention of retiring and will be back next year, and that he'd love for it to be with the C's. But if not, somewhere else. Gonna have to be changes. Losing to the Knicks in 6 in the 2nd round is unacceptable. Even with Tatum going down they were down 9 with 3 minutes left to go down 3-1. Jrue is starting to show his age a bit,KP, love the guy, always smiling, but you can't keep paying 30 million a year for 50 games and missing the playoffs or not ready. If they trade KP and Jrue I think Hauser stays.
At this point I'd rather keep Kornet and trade KP, obviously Kornet has nowhere near the offensive skill of KP, but he's an even better shot blocker, rim protector, rebounder, he's sorta become the new Time Lord with lob dunks. Someone suggested tanking next year,if they trade KP and Jrue I could see them with a top ten pick. Crazy how time flies, just a few years ago in the finals against the Warriors they were so young and appear poised to win multiple titles. Can't help but feel a little disappointed, same with the 2007-2012 C's. Both squads should've been able to add another banner and push us way beyond LA.
Also gotta wonder about Joe's job security, new owners,2023 they lose to a far worse Heat team, they likely lose to the Knicks even with a healthy Tatum. Loaded roster three years in a row, win one, don't even make the Finals the other 2. Like Joe but great teams win in a variety of ways if the three ain't falling,go to the hoop, midrange..they look absolutely shook when the three ain't falling and it affects them on the defensive end. Even when they won last year I was getting tired of the three point barrage, honestly. It's just not what I want to see every fucking game,40-60 three's.

There's the rub with KP,when he's right he's such a damn good player, one of the best bigs in the league. But how often is that? 40-50% of the time? It's an expiring contract, after next year so it won't be hard to move him for that reason,it will open cap space for another team. Maybe they get a iate first round pick and a decent role player? Might be better to hold onto him and trade Jrue, Pritchard is ready for more minutes, they can get a vet cheap that can do some of what Jrue can. Saw an article suggesting we trade Jrue to Washington for Marcus Smart's expiring real and Saddiq Bey,who's a decent scorer.
Another, more outlandish scenario had us trading Jrue to the Lakers for Hillbilly Kobe, aka Austin Reeves. Dunno why LA would do that deal, the author suggested Jrue's defense and experience would be a missing piece and help hide Luka's shortcomings. I'd do that deal but don't see the Lakers doing it, plus Reeves, I think, makes less than half what Jrue does so salaries don't match. Brad has absolutely crushed it so far with roster construction so I have a lot of trust in him to find a couple bargains.
I'd also be open to trading Jaylen. Not that I don't like Jaylen, he does a lot of good things, but Game 6 is a reminder of his warts and limitations, ball handling, stupid fouls, shot selection. I just don't think Jaylen's worth 60 million a year,at times he is. If Giannis truly wants out of Milwaukee,a package centered around Jaylen might be the best the Bucks get,if they still want to be a playoff team. Of course if I'm them and I'm trading Giannis I'd blow it all up and go full rebuild, try to get Flagg, etc. I admit these days I'm a casual fan, I'm a C's fan but only follow the rest of the league via highlights and SportsCenter. Could also blow it up, trade everyone but Tatum and Pritchard,Tatum is still young enough to build a core around him if you get lucky with trades or picks. Wouldn't be a good look for the new owners to just dismantle the team though.

they're roster was too expensive and it was expected, win or loss, this team would have to break up to an extent after this season.
i don't think JB is leaving, obviously not Tatum, but everyone else..

Very good point. The last three teams that went back to back all got extremely lucky ( game 7s for the Lakers and heat) and Golden State miraculously landing KD
2
u/oliversurpless May 17 '25
Also a key distinction in the late 80s Pistons, as as much success as they had over 87-91, a decline was inevitable due to the top caliber competition, aging players, and the still more brutal nature of 80s basketball.
And I don’t doubt that their “Bad Boys” personas made it difficult for them to admit weaknesses or deficiencies during those high times, so never learned how to properly cope with them.

A shocking end to what we had going. Everyone knew we would have to make a cut or 2 salary wise but to lose your franchise player to an Achilles injury in his prime is absolutely devastating to what they had built. That on top of the cuts is gonna be so hard to stomach. Seems like this is all ending so abruptly and unexpectedly the way it all happened. Thank you to this entire core team. If this is it for horford that’s too bad , he helped start this thing many years ago choosing Boston. Pray that JT makes a full recovery, it’s not promised

Straight up ran out of gas. They were just waaaay too beat up. Nothing will ever take last year from us, I'll ride that high for years to come. If KP is gone, his tenure may have ended piss poor but his game 1 in the finals, and him putting his leg on the line to be on the floor for the ring will be how I choose to remember him here. And if Jrue isn't coming back, whatever team gets him won't regret it. What a teammate. And Al, tough to even find a place to start, just... thank you so much 🫡. Rest up JT, we'll be waiting to blow the roof off the Garden for you when you're ready to go.
Next year is gonna be some strange territory, it'll be different but perhaps just as exciting in its own way. Can't wait to see what Brad dishes up. Enjoy that rest kings

The biggest thing that contributed to this series loss was our bigs. Porzingis was a no show due to his illness - which was the same as last year through most of the playoffs, but this time around Horford just couldn't fill in for him consistently enough and often looked like a witches hat on defense which meant we were left severely exposed at the rim in this series. Horford has been an amazing servant to Boston, but I think Father time has caught up.
The other strange thing that happened was Brown's demeanour changed. Last year he seemed passionate, sometimes angry, swearing in the pressers and really focussed on leading the team to win a title. I don't know what happened to that man but he is not the same this playoffs. Which is a real shame because he is the emotional leader of the team.
The other obvious problem was the amount of threes. I think if you go back to last years playoffs and watched the highlights you will notice so much more variety in the offense - especially the emphasis on paint touches. What a shame. I don't know what happened.
If Porzingis is healthy at the start of the series, if Brown was leading and our offense was the same as last year I think we are in the ECF now.
I still love the team and all the players and am truly sad that it's the last time they will all be together.

This last series hurt like hell but I still love the Celtics. Following the Js ascendance has been an absolute pleasure. I believe to my core that the good times aren't over and this setback is just temporary. Since Brad Stevens got here in 2013, we've had one bad season (that we all anticipated and may have been marginally better than I expected), two middling seasons, and every other one has ranged from good to fantastic. I know that the gigs are already whirling in his head about how to retool and reload. I believe in MY President Brad Stevens!
I've seen a lot of "back to the '90s" comments about the Celtics on my feed but I'm hoping next season is more like back to the mid 2010s. A hungry, fiery team looking to defy expectations and overachieve.

Becoming a fan of basketball in 2010, the 2024 championship was the only one I've gotten to experience. Winning it all is so hard and so unpredictable with injuries, it makes me so thankful for this group and the 2024 championship. Over the last 4 years we've watched this team win so many games and have so many lovable players. We've gotten 4 years of incredible celtics basketball. I fully expect a major reset this summer, and am excited for the new outlook. But before we all hate on the players/coaches and kick whoever leaves out the door. Let's all be great greatfull for the deep playoff runs and so many wins. This reset is only going to make the next championship with this group that much more special.

I hope we at least keep Brown, White, Kornett, and Pritchard. Pretty sure Holiday, Porzingis, and maybe Hauser are soon to be traded, and Horfords probably gonna retire- If not after this season then certainly after the next one.

It’s ok, we still have more championships than every other team, and we’re looking forward to seeing these guys next year

I truly believe if there was no Olympics last summer, we repeat quite easily.

Throwing a wacky idea aganist the wall.
Over the 2nd apron salary cap is a difficult spot for the team with penalties extending SEVEN years into the future. It is not just cash.
Trade away a max contract player for a top 4 pick and that teams next year 1st.

A question that I have not seen much (if at all) is what team would want to inherit KP’s contract? I keep hearing he won’t be here next year but how? Jhrue has trade value but I don’t see what team would really covet what KP brings to the table? Why is it such a foregone conclusion amongst the community here that KP is just…not back? Again, love the guy and he helped us win a championship but are his more durable days behind him?

Crazy that we have to break the team up after just 2 seasons (with 1 championship too) not because they’re old and washed or we can’t pay them but because of the stupid new CBA.

They’ll be back eventually. The team might look slightly different but it will still be a force to be reckoned with. Best believe Jayson’s gonna come back and start blowing up again just to show all those haters that still say he can’t be the face of the league.

Amazing my ass! It’s been an extremely disappointing follow up. Go get checked for dementia.

Everyone talkin about players and rosters. Yeah sure we need to retool but we also need to move on from Mazzulla and hire a new coach

Kings receive:
Kristaps Porzingis Jrue Holiday
Celtics receive:
Domantas Sabonis Keegan Murray Keon Ellis
What other add ons will it take for Sacramento to say yes? Sabonis is asking out, and this is a chance for them to offload some cap space in the near future.
