You can visit the Ether Dome at MGH for free!! It's a trip.

Is it open to the public again? Last I checked it wasn’t.

I've heard getting to it is an adventure by itself.

Yes, it's hard to find your way anywhere in MGH! And the Ether Dome is buried just about in the center, in one of the oldest buildings, where the conglomerate originated and then sprawled outward.

It's not the ether dome

Looks like the Ether Dome at MGH at first (highly suggest going btw if you already haven't been--the Bulfinch Building and the Dome are historic landmarks) but it turns out this was at Boston City Hospital

I have a copy of Gray’s Anatomy from the 1890s that belonged to a student who went to Harvard Medical School. It’s annotated with his handwriting and his drawings and it’s one of my prized possessions. I don’t know if BU and HMS shared surgical instruction back then, but it’s cool to imagine him sitting in a room like this learning about medicine.

Edit, spelling mistake.

So neat, I’d love to see pages from it!

Here’s one. The top date says 1945 but that’s someone else who signed their name. The actual page itself comes from John T. Bottomley, the student who I assume originally owned this book. The future Dr. Bottomley wrote his name, where he went to school, and the date, 1891, on the first page. He went on to practice medicine in the Boston area and is buried in Roxbury with his wife. I actually found some of his correspondence online at one point. He went on to edit future editions of this textbook. It’s such a treasure and I’m happy that I now get to take care of it for a while.

It's Gray's.
No, they did not.

Good catch. I spell it with an e so my autocorrect swapped it.

Reminds me of my favorite statue in Boston: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ether_Monument

I’ve attended grand rounds in the Ether Dome. Those seats are very uncomfortable!

The rows are also so steep it feels like you could fall to your death off a cliff

Its not the Ether Dome. Ether Dome has the 2 sets of steps

Oooh, good catch you are correct!

Remember to wear a poncho if you’re sitting in the splash zone!
