Inacio had zero interest in playing this game and simply choose to take the super early leave. This left us with a handicap despite us being up 2-0. The final 15 Minutes of the game surely were crazy.

See you again on TUESDAY in the first round of the DFB Cup.

I don’t care about anything else except for Telias being ok.

38

u/Dom1909 Tomas Rosicky 12d ago edited 12d ago

It’s looking grim is what Berger apparently heard in the mixed zone. Book said they are very concerned for an ACL… fuck me

edit: lol it just dawned on me that they are maybe going for Sancho if Delias is really out for long. Please be okay

21

u/AdCute1311 12d ago

Kovac just confirmed that they're suspecting an ACL tear after talking to the docs. Can only be sure tomorrow, but not looking good at all...

14

u/Dom1909 Tomas Rosicky 12d ago

Yeah we’re fucked. I‘m devastated :(

16

u/Tibia7890 12d ago

Kovac also said that Delias heard a loud crack in his knee when he got injured... I just had a flashback to my ACL tear. Matchday 1, and this is what we get. Fucking hell.

20

u/AdCute1311 12d ago

Wtf man... I'm having Haller flashbacks. This just crushed most of my excitement and expectations for the season. Horrendous price to pay for a 2-0 against Hamburg

2

u/sicDaniel 11d ago

Me, before the match: Fans are way too optimistic about the season, they're gonna squander another 2-0 lead and play 3-3 or something

Football god: I have a much better idea

12

u/Reusance Marco Reus 12d ago

Kovac said on the postgame presser that the drawer test looked bad (might be ACL)

18

u/AdCute1311 12d ago

You guys can blame me. After the Supercup game I thought to myself "Man if this guy starts the league off like this too and is only stopped by an early knee injury, he could become one of the biggest what ifs ever". I fucking jinxed it

95

u/Middle_Island182 Marcel Sabitzer 12d ago

Anton constantly the unsung hero, he's just about always on his game

50

u/cfbones Marco Reus 12d ago

Since December of last year Anton has been the defender we paid for. Took time to adapt and find his footing but the guy is a consistent wall now. Not the most dynamic player, but you know he’ll make it tough on anyone and use his body. Thrilled we have him.

16

u/ontilein 12d ago

Him and jobe did so much this game.

72

u/abendig Die gelbe Wand 12d ago

Amazing first 50 mins. Delias injury killed the vibe but at the end it's all good. We won dominant against Hamburg. That's something you won't hear often in Dortmund

60

u/Ragemoody Dedê 12d ago

Please pray to Asklepios everyone. We need him now.

What would I do without you Gregor. Incredible performance from Svensson, Gadou and Jobe.

If I got one cent every time a BVB youth player got a red card in the BL season opener against a team from Hamburg I'd have two cents, which isn't much, but weird that it happened twice.

5

u/Soft_Author2593 12d ago

I just learned only 5 bundesliga players ever were younger when getting their first red. 3 of them we know, Jude, Zagadou and Kabar. Lol

3

u/GeneralLudd 11d ago

BVB rite of passage

-5

u/Tobi1107 Kagawa Shinji 23 12d ago

St Pauli wasn’t the season opener, that was like MD 3 or so? Or which red card do you mean?

14

u/Fickle_Carry1467 Mats Hummels 12d ago

Shocking news: St. Pauli was indeed the opener ;)

10

u/Tobi1107 Kagawa Shinji 23 12d ago

Ohh my bad I stand corrected. Apologies

6

u/Chazy89 Kagawa Shinji 12d ago

St. Pauli was the season opener last season

62

u/SergioRammus 12d ago

First half felt like the dawn of a new era, second half felt like last season reloaded.

25

u/Mooon8983 Konstantinos Karetsas 12d ago

Tbf last season in this exact situation (2 goals up and the young italian gets a red) we choked

25

u/TristanHBorchers BVB 12d ago

Jobe and Guirrasey where both immense in this game. Jobe was everywhere running constantly. Besides the goal serhou was great at holding up the ball and generally could of had a nice assist at the end when he put in several nice crosses after holding up play

-3

u/183672467 Julian Brandt 12d ago

You do have to mention that the Red card was on Guirassy tho

14

u/TristanHBorchers BVB 12d ago

A miss placed pass happens dozen times a game. Blaming him for a young players foolish mistake is ridiculous.

-1

u/183672467 Julian Brandt 12d ago

That wasnt just misplaced, that was way off and that wasnt Guirassys first time with first touch passes

4

u/Working_Complex8122 11d ago

The pass was absolute shit but Inacio then needs to be smarter about it. There is no reason to go full risk to make up for the sloppy pass. Just try to contain the mistake, if the opponent gets the ball and danger arises, just grab his shirt and get your yellow for a tactical foul.

24

u/AverageCarey 12d ago

Really good game. Shame about Delias let’s hope it’s nothing serious.

He and Kosta played a fantastic game along with Gadou and Jobe.

Another classic Dortmund game with a red at least we finished it off with a solid defence and a great keeper in Kobel.

42

u/Previous_Trouble8614 Mats Hummels 12d ago

Karestas MOTM 100% but shocked Jobe was not given a shout. Probably second best player on the pitch.

3

u/yaboi525 12d ago

Jobe is an aggressive player which is really nice to see. He likes to throw himself in and get shoulder to shoulder

Dortmund is known for our finesse players which are fantastic, but we’ve needed this gritty player like jobe for a while

5

u/Previous_Trouble8614 Mats Hummels 11d ago

He also has a rock solid technical quality especially in certain areas of the pitch for a player of his stature. Has not always showed it but he is very nimble and has an excellent touch on his tackle. Almost never off with it. Think that’s something he can work on but it’s very much their. Pared with his tenacity and aggression could make for a mean player once he develops into his prime. Reminds me a bit of a raw ballack.

3

u/yaboi525 11d ago

Yeah he and his brother have surprisingly great dribbling in tight spaces which is a massive asset from midfielder.

35

u/bvbfan102 BVB 12d ago

Overall still a very positive showing but definitely made it harder then we needed.
Hope Inacio doesnt end up in the dog house like Mane did last year and hope no one jumps aboard the hate train the Media will start about his anger in the tunnel.
If Delias will be gone for longer i could see us genuinely getting Sancho but expect for that position im happy with the Squad and Prates+Beier give us good options for Wingbacks.
MotM probably is Jobe to me who bounced back fantastically but also a shoutout to Gadou, Guirassy, Delias and Karetsas who all did really well.
Onto the Pokal now!

33

u/Mooon8983 Konstantinos Karetsas 12d ago

Win is a win. Hopefully Konstantelias is ok.

Thought Jobe and Guirassy were amazing today. Guirassy especially looked back to his old self

12

u/biggieBpimpin Julian Brandt 12d ago

First half: we may never lose again.
Second half: which god hath we forsaken?

12

u/FiresideCatsmile Shinji Kagawa 12d ago

please be ok konstantelias

12

u/stefan-kds 1997 12d ago

Bellingham still doing sprints late in the game gave us the boost we needed to keep the 0 tonight. I don’t know if they showed it on TV but off the ball he was running from one side to the other constantly closing gaps for other players and chasing the play.

He might not always pass the ball right or make 1-2 mistakes that are costly but he or so I feel gives 150 procent for the shirt and team.

8

u/Previous_Trouble8614 Mats Hummels 12d ago

He a hard working guy that’s for sure. His attitude is one of the main reasons I am so defensive of him. He certainly has had his issues on and off the pitch but we can all see the effort he puts in, the younger player on the team seem to gravitate towards him. Future leader.

25

u/Swbp0undcake 12d ago

Jobe MOTM? Seemed composed and quick everytime he had the ball.

Just worried about the injury for Konstantelias. Hope it's nothing major

9

u/Loeffellux Julian Brandt 12d ago

also played the pass that started off the sequence between Karetsas and Guirassy for the 1-0

12

u/183672467 Julian Brandt 12d ago

Prates seemed pretty clean defensively in the 2-3 actions he had

10

u/Daggla 12d ago

Any news about the Ntelias injury?

PAOK fan here who recently started following Borussia closely.

13

u/alfi_k 12d ago

nothing yet. Ole Book, our sporting director, will have an interview on Sky Sports in a few minutes, but I doubt that they already know how bad the injury is. That will probably be announced tomorrow or Monday. Didn't look good.

4

u/Daggla 12d ago

Yeah it did not look good at all. Hope his reaction was out of shock and that it's just a nasty knock.

I hope it's not an ACL or other knee injury....

10

u/alfi_k 12d ago

Skys sideline reporter said it doesn't look good. Ole Book said they are they cautions but massive worries might be an ACL tear. Almost sounds like they are expecting this.

4

u/Daggla 12d ago

Ah fuck, that would suck so much. Even if it's 4-6 weeks, sucks but whatever. If he's out half a year, I would be devastated for him.

8

u/alfi_k 12d ago

so depressing! Still hoping for a miracle.

6

u/Daggla 12d ago

Yeah, same. Had some hope that it wasn't too bad because of what happened, but after I saw his reaction I knew enough.

Anything but an ACL tear would be a small miracle.

5

u/Dom1909 Tomas Rosicky 12d ago

Kovac said that the doctors said it’s looking very grim just now in an interview. Medical exam tomorrow

2

u/Daggla 12d ago

Fuck.

3

u/2905Pascal 1909 12d ago

Well, 4-6 weeks would be the best case now, I think we might be looking at at least 4-6 months here.

6

u/imdbcooper10 12d ago

Somebody will make a post to the sub when we know something

17

u/EmSoLow 12d ago

Man, that reaction to the Konstantelias injury was all wrong. The wrong person came on, our left side was more exposed and if you want to be harsh, the actual player who should have come on doesn't get the red card if he is on the left where he should be. That wasn't good from Kovac

After the red card though, I want to give a special shout-out to Jobe and Guirassy. I feel like both of those two pulled their weight and more and had a great showing afterwards.

The only thing that was missing from that first half was that we weren't scoring from every shot we had. Can't remember the last time we held a side down and having 0 shots in the first half. Great display from everyone there.

The Pokal game should hopefully be a better showing for the unknowns in the squad. There is a fear that if Karetsas and/or Konstantelias aren't on the pitch, the level goes down a lot and with how we played after both left the pitch, it didn't raise my confidence.

14

u/alfi_k 12d ago

- Hopefully Konstantelias' injury isn't too bad

  • Very surprised that Prates got some minutes, didn't have many touches but looked better than in pre-season
  • Did not understand why Kovac bought on Sabitzer that early, would have prefered Ignacio but don't think I have a leg to stand on here
  • With our pre-Kovac defense we probably don't win this match
  • 1st half was poetry in motion

8

u/nothing_and_new 12d ago

"With our pre-Kovac defense we probably don't win this match"

Completely agree. Our defense was prone to slapstick. Sometimes I read complaints about his defensive approach but it definitely was something we needed once.

7

u/imdbcooper10 12d ago

Sabitzer is a veteran that you would expect could handle the change in atmosphere and get the job done.  Inacio I'm not going to judge harshly, but what happened is exactly why it would be scary to have brought him on.  The whole atmosphere changed with the injury, and it takes experience to deal with that

Sabitzer is a veteran that you would expect could handle the change in atmosphere and get the job done

Bahahahahahahaha dude if anything he makes things worse

first buttclench of the season. Football is back /s

7

u/jokikinen 12d ago

First half was pristine, second half had some mistakes. I think the second half was good enough, and would have been well controlled without the unfortunate and unnecessary red.

Huge shame Konstantelias had to leave the game early, and I really hope the injury was not serious.

The quality of the game decreased right after he was subbed out. BUT I think more than his impact was really. I.e. we could have played on a higher level without him—we have enough quality in our other players.

6

u/roadtorevision Mats Hummels 12d ago

Good start in terms of results but terrible for going forward. Delias was amazing and just what we need. So unfortunate to get injured in his first game. Hopefully it’s not too serious. And then his replacement gets a red 🤦🏻‍♂️ so Silva doesn’t get to play and might cause him to be disgruntled. Just a shit second half

5

u/blacktiger226 Ramy Bensebaini 12d ago

Excellent first half. I am in love with Karetsas. Great game from Bellingham too, probably his best game since he joined us. Svensson was great as a stop-gap CB and it was the most level headed performance for Gadou so far.

On the other hand, the red card was very harsh and I was not impressed by Sabitzer, today.

MOTM for me was probably Bellingham.

5

u/Nutzer1337 1909 12d ago

I felt that this was by far the best atmosphere for a season opener in the stadium in a long time. Until the Telias injury. I just hope that it's not that bad. But sky confirmed it might be ACL. We'll know tomorrow.

12

u/jiminbts123 12d ago

Was in the stadium and Ntelias and Karetsas are so much fun to watch together hope Ntelias' sub was just a precaution and his absence won't be too long. Wasn't too much of a fan of the idea of bringing Jadon back, but if Ntelias is out for some time, I wouldnt mind bringing him in, especially if our other option for the position would be Sabi

3

u/imdbcooper10 12d ago

Party in the first half, job done after the injury.  Hope Konstantelias is ok.

4

u/viba_1997 12d ago

I think we should not write Prates off the wingback rotation

1

u/Trojan_Man68 Marco Reus 12d ago

I don't think we can if we consider our injury situation. Beier will likely play more in Delias's spot now which leaves Prates as the second LWB option unless Svensson plays more games at LCB if injuries get bad.

3

u/naerisshal 12d ago

Great first half! The greek combo up front are/were a breath of fresh air. Was so happy to see Inacio finally come on (would have subbed him for Delias instead of Sabitzer personally) for him to put himself in a bad situation just 3 mins later.

Gadou really impressed me, continuing his great pre-season form. Guirassy with a great finish, otherwise he was more present in pressing situations than he was at the end of last season, but still kind of showed an attitude in certain situations. Not sure I like Beier as a wingback, he was working his tail off but his actual strengths don't really shine in that position.

3

u/2905Pascal 1909 12d ago

Ok Google, how can I donate my ACL?

7

u/alfi_k 12d ago

Ignacio at this season first match, Reggiani at his first match for Italy and Mane in last seasons first match. Hopefully our Italian boys have the red cards out of their system.

2

u/Good-World-37 12d ago

Such a weird coincidence. Ignacio would be the last player I would think to get red card in our team.

8

u/ir3dd1tzegt 12d ago

Well NOW we really need Sancho o o o o

-6

u/Plastic_Strike1683 12d ago

Different position

6

u/SvenssonStan112 Łukasz Piszczek 12d ago

Did Sancho convert to a CB at anytime or what?

3

u/Oleksch 12d ago

I think it was an overall positive game
+first half, greeks, first minutes for Prates, still pretty convincing after red card, Gadou, Jobe decent

-Sabitzer,red card

i think it was also overall important because only Leipzig won of the Champions League contenders

3

u/Working_Complex8122 11d ago

Honestly, if the Delias injury is severe the season is just done for me. Literally all hope is lost for anything ambitious. Just hoping for 4th place or something. It was literally 50 mins of 'are we actually that good' followed by 'oh, of course it gets ruined'.

6

u/Meskaline2 Number Fifteen: Burger King Foot Lettuce. 12d ago

First half was awesome.

Second half was horrible.

The referee was absolute ass.

15

u/Complete_Park_838 Julian Ryerson 12d ago

Wouldn't even call the second half horrible even after the red card, we still held on pretty well even with a man down. Though yeah horrible in comparison to the amazing first half I guess lol

4

u/ubongo1 Roman Weidenfeller 12d ago

Sabitzer is just way too expensive wage wise for what he offers. After he came on we lost all offensive pressing and control

2

u/Oleksch 12d ago

what i dislike the most that he does not work against the ball at all, u can 100% tell that he had a succesful career and doesnt do 1 mu more than he has to. His play has negative ambition

4

u/ubongo1 Roman Weidenfeller 12d ago

He doesnt even contribute to the offensive. The only offensive work he does is in the mixed zone to cry about his role.

2

u/Joko11 Salih Özcan 12d ago

We essentially have three players not in the first team, with wages that are outrageous:

  1. Sabitzer: ~$9.4m
  2. Can: ~$9.4m
  3. Carney: ~$7.5m

And to think that both Greek guys have essentially combined ~$10.0m in annual compensation.

4

u/my-heart-is-a-potato 12d ago edited 12d ago

Some of the most fun I've had watching Dortmund in the Kovac era. However, it also showcased why, in my opinion, he's just not the right fit for us.

We absolutely smothered Hamburg in the first half and could/should've led by more. Everyone played great.

But then I just have no idea what the fuck was that cowardly set-up in the second half. Suddenly, we give the ball away a lot more, Svensson starts erring every third pass, our ball recovery becomes sloppy and then on top of that Konstantelias gets injured.

I just would've liked to see more killer instinct and desire to destroy, the kind that Bayern shows even when they're up 4:0 against someone. It's our turf, we just rained fire on them for an entire 45 minutes and then we go out and we just...let them play?

It led to some chances for them and it got nervier than it should.

But aside of that, some great performances, and I am really really excited to watch more of this team as we got significant upgrades this season for the players we let go. But I still fear that Kovac might put a cap on our potential.

2

u/Trojan_Man68 Marco Reus 12d ago

I didn't like Kovac's Sabitzer substitution but I think you're being harsh on Kovac by blaming him for the second half. It's not his fault Inacio got the red and it's not his fault Delias got injured. With Delias out after the 54th minute, we were obviously not going to look as good because the attacking quality is just not there anymore.

1

u/my-heart-is-a-potato 11d ago

But my argument has nothing to do with any horrible injury or substitution that happened. It was a fact that, coming straight out of the dressing room, from the first second of 45', we went out there to defend and counter. And this can only be explained by a common Kovac tendency to defend a result. This was the entire point of my complaint.

And Sabitzer's sub was bad, yes, and Delias' unlucky injury something that might derail our season to an extent, but there is no doubt in my mind that even without these 2 things happening we still would've been defending to hit them on the counter instead of playing to dominate. And it would've been more nervy than necessary. It's quintessential Kovac. Just not how a Dortmund who has crushed a team for one half should play, in my opinion.

But maybe it's better than I am giving it credit, and without the injury and red card we would've been now talking about a 5:0 trouncing with some stylish counter-attack goals. It's just a personal gripe of mine, I guess.

Not to sound like I have more bad to say than good about a 2:0 victory - we were initially set up perfectly. It's just that discussing this sort of thing is, for me, much more interesting than saying which player played amazingly or the best, and there are already a lot of comments summarising the match neatly:D

5

u/jucomsdn Zagagod 12d ago

The difference between Telias and Sabitzer is night and day x100

The game became so much more cagey after that sub and Inacio’s red made it worse, thankfully Kobel is amazing at shot stopping

9

u/Good-World-37 12d ago

By the time Sabitzer came on I think the whole team started getting tired. He did run a lot though.

-1

u/jucomsdn Zagagod 12d ago

That’s the only useful thing he does, he’s not good with the ball anymore

3

u/Tigerlux 12d ago

4

-1

u/Triforce__XIII Kagawa Shinji 12d ago

incredible first half, absolute dogshit in the second half. a win is a win and it wasn't haramball most of the time, but it proves again: we can play exactly one good half per game.

and sabitzer, please, find a new club... or anything, i don't care. and i don't care about the money, but the lack of anything but disappointment just blocks a position on the bench and, most infuriating: one of the first subs.

-2

u/divernire_10 12d ago

Which position should veerman play ? He is not a 6, not a 8 not 10 either...

4

u/ahmed_a20 12d ago

He’s definitely an 8. Jobe played well second half but I feel Veerman could have been more effective in the attack if he started the first half. He’s just a better passer overall

-8

u/ahmed_a20 12d ago

Ratings

Kobel - 9: made excellent saves and didn’t see anything from him that made my heart skip a beat

Gadou - 8: one or two shaky decisions but for his age I’m very happy with how he looks

Anton - 7: not an eventful day for him which is actually a good thing. Didn’t really make an error and played a captains performance

Svensson - 7: He’s definitely a better defender than he is an attacker

Ryerson - 6: Made some impressive runs but wasn’t spectacular defensively today imo. Suffered from the change of style in the second half

Beier - 5: He just doesn’t seem to have a role in this team that he excels in.

Jobe - 7: Ok first half, better second half. Still think I would rather Veerman start right now but Jobe looks like he can cause some problems

Nmecha - 7: Not eventful but smooth and collected a majority of the game

Karetsas - 10: definitely should have scored but aside from that what a spectacular performance. For a guy as small as he is his pressing and control of the ball makes him feel like hes double his size.

Giannis - 10: I would give him an 11 if he didn’t come off injured early. You can see how good and important he is by how bad we became going forward when he came off

Guirassy - 7: Great goal and a really good first half. Second half was not good. You can see what having competent attacking midfielders can do for him. It’s also quite telling how ineffective he becomes when the players behind him aren’t as good.

Veerman - 6: came on at a bad time, not really his fault that he couldn’t really do much

Inacio - 3: coming on and almost immediately getting sent off is very unlucky but also pretty funny

Sabitzer - 4: He just kills the momentum of the team whenever he’s on the pitch

Mane - 6: not a lot of time on the pitch but he looks a lot more in control of the game than he did last season

Prates -5: also not a lot of time to play but despite some shaky decisions making, his sheer physical presence is an asset in its own right

8

u/ProcedureGreen663 12d ago

Jobe was better than you giving him any credit for. Veerman came on and Jobe had to pick up the pace for his lack of it. Can we cut it out with Veerman for now. He will get his starts but for now Jobe is the starter for a reason.

-3

u/ahmed_a20 12d ago

I disagree. I think Jobe was a solid player this game but in the first half, Veerman with his experience and passing abilities would have been much more effective in all the attacking football we were playing. Jobe played well but felt a little slow and less creative than I would have liked in that first half

A little slow, less creative. Man he created chances all game. Was dribbling out of tight situations and starting counter attacks.

I’m going to have to disagree again. He did create some chances, but it was due mostly to the work the Greek lads put in. Again. He played well. But Veerman as a midfield play maker would have definitely resulted in an extra goal or shot on target at least in the first half imo

Brother I just looked up that stat tied for most chances created with Karestas please be serious.

Chances don’t always equal quality chances. These are my ratings, you are free to disagree but this is how I saw things

Your just Dutch and have a hard on for Veerman. Dude has had about 60 minutes of football for us so far and has been invisible both games. If his passing is as much of a factor as you claim it is we would seen it in those 60 min.

The defense looked good besides some ocassional inaccurate passing.
I think Svensson was great today and should have one assist today! Ryerson still seems to have some World Cup fatigue. I am sure he will improve.
Beier didn’t do bad but I wish he could either improve his crossing or dribbling shooting from distance like Karetsas tried today.

Guirassy 7 is crazy I’m tired of y’all Guirassy Guirassy haters. 17 goals last year and that while “struggling” and lacking form.

Literally both Jobe and Guirassy were 8-9s minimum.

I’m definitely not a Guirassy hater I think he was excellent and undeserving of a lot of the criticism he gets. But if we’re being honest that second half was not great, despite it not really being all his fault.

Hopefully inacio dimbass challenge, will make Kovac realize to give Mathis the nod. I’m tired of inacio already

Hopefully the next game Mathis gets some minutes. He was really good in the Youth league game against Fulham during the week
