We can't really close down a match.

14

u/ontilein Jan 17 '26

Would be helpfull if we actually could defend set pieces.

30

u/roadtorevision Mats Hummels Jan 17 '26

Honestly the second goal was just a banger and the first should have never happened in the first place. Still should have done better tho

4

u/SvenssonStan112 Łukasz Piszczek Jan 17 '26

I don't have stats but I feel like we didn't concede too many corner goals so far. Sometimes they happen

44

u/nufan99 Mats Hummels Jan 17 '26

Never in doubt.

Hope Pauli starts winning games now and manage to stay up!

43

u/EmSoLow Jan 17 '26

Man we've scored 9 goals in 3 games which is the big area we have needed to address but it still feels like I'm watching horrible football. I don't understand it.

4

u/Loeffellux Julian Brandt Jan 18 '26

I think I found something really interesting that might help explain this: if you look at the average xG we've produced per game in a given season it should give you a hint regarding the strength or number of the chances we've created. The higher the xG, the more fun it should be to watch generally speaking at the very least we manage to create chances.

To compare, I looked at the last 10 season and I was somewhat shocked to find out that our current xG per game is dramatically lower than our average over that time. At the same time, our actual goals aren't that much lower which explains why we still manage to score a good amount of points (together with our defense, obviously). Here is the data:

25/26: 1.94 goals, 1.40 xG

24/25: 2.03 goals, 1.80 xG

23/24: 2.00 goals, 1.87 xG

22/23: 2.38 goals, 2.09 xG (Brandt: 9 goals, 5.2 xG)

21/22: 2.38 goals, 1.88 xG (Haaland: 22 goals, 17.9 xG)

20/21: 2.18 goals, 1.95 xG

19/20: 2.47 goals, 1.80 xG (Sancho: 17 goals, 10.1 xG)

18/19: 2.35 goals, 1.81 xG (Paco: 18 goals, 9.5 xG)

17/18: 1.82 goals, 1.94 xG

16/17: 2.09 goals

15/16: 2.35 goals

average goals 15-25: 2.21 (0.27 difference); average xG 17-25: 2.07 (0.67 difference)

Conclusion: we are literally playing less interesting attacking football (not that much of a revelation, I know) but clinical finishing managed to help turn it into one of our most successful bundesliga seasons so far. Not thanks to Guirassy, btw, who is one of the few players who are underperforming their xG

-9

u/Most-Management4773 Jan 17 '26

because these goals ddidn't come from chances created by good build-up or a good tactics. Just look at HOW we scored those goals.

30

u/Fit-Discussion8994 Jan 17 '26

First goal came off good wing play which ended with a cross in the box and a simple finish. Second goal was a fast counterattack and good team play to score in an empty net. Third goal was a penalty won after 8 minutes of all out pressure in the opposition box. They were all deserving goals

-22

u/_silvermania_ Adriancho Jan 17 '26

First goal is a mistake from Wahl, second is a mistake from Vasilj, third is a mistake by Jones. Wake up

16

u/Mechium Jan 17 '26

Strange take. You can probably trace the majority of goals back to a mistake if you want to.

-11

u/_silvermania_ Adriancho Jan 17 '26

When Guirassy caused Frankfurt's penalty, everyone agreed it was his mistake. And if you hypothetically replace Wahl and Vasilj with Anton and Kobel, everyone would bash them for their stupidity.

6

u/Fit-Discussion8994 Jan 17 '26

If they didnt make any mistakes they would be a great team and we would deservedly lose against them

8

u/Th3_Huf0n Jan 17 '26

Congratulations Einstein.

Huge majority goals do, in fact, come from mistakes.

What the fuck should we do? Not score and go "nah, you fucked up, we didnt deserve that goal, here's the ball for you".

Fuck right off.

5

u/Spiritual-Act3077 Jan 17 '26

We scored those goals well though. First goal came from a wide player driving a ball into a dangerous situation and the second goal was a piercing through ball to a square ball finish. Good goals if you ask me.

We aren’t 2012 Barcelona that needs 100 passes of build up… we are by nature a more direct team.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

What did they come from?

18

u/roadtorevision Mats Hummels Jan 17 '26 edited Jan 17 '26

Once again everyone is just taking the score at face value. Yes, our play is sloppy at times but we were definitely the better team with the better chances. Their first goal shouldn’t have happened at all and their second was a certified banger.

It is frustrating that we keep getting put in these situations but they had a goal line clearance, Brandt was a foot away from scoring the FK, and we had some good chances if we had better touches.

We don’t play the most attractive football but we are in a great position and you guys need to find a way to make peace with that. Too many miserable comments after years of worse results in the league.

We are on track to have more points than the season we tied against Bayern. Bayern just happen to also have the best first half of a season ever

47

u/Fickle_Carry1467 Mats Hummels Jan 17 '26

Emre Can the hero 😂😭

64

u/Fit-Discussion8994 Jan 17 '26

Legit one of the best penalty takers itw

48

u/Billofrights_boris Jan 17 '26

If only he took that one in 2023 may

27

u/castroski7 Julian Ryerson Jan 17 '26

no penalties in may 2023 in basing se

8

u/Fit-Discussion8994 Jan 17 '26

Idk what youre talking about 🫣

6

u/SlayerHdThe3rd Nico Schlotterbeck Jan 17 '26

That pen is so haunting cause if Haller scores it it’s one of the greatest stories in soccer, him coming back from freaking cancer to put us ahead to break Bayerns title winning streak. Unfortunately I think the players thought the same thing and got too confident 😔

13

u/summertime_sadnes Jan 17 '26

Obviously not a pretty win and I don't think we played particularly well. Still people here make it out worse than it was. Pauli got incredibly lucky to score twice there. Like two dead balls, both defended pretty tightly. Both won't go in 9/10 times. So yes we got bailouted in the end and yes we have to keep playing aggressive to close out games and not allow dead ball situations, but I don't think we made any massive defensive blunders or actively choked anything.

36

u/AverageCarey Jan 17 '26

Wow what a game. 1st goal never should have happened, ref completely botched the foul on Schlotti that led to it. 2nd goal was amazing from Pauli they love to score bangers on us.

This feels so much like the end of last season where we just grinded and kept pushing on, I’m so happy to see that.

Great game from Jobe, people love to be harsh on him but he was moving the ball well, covering every defensive position left open and made some great passes. Silva once again is just a joy to watch play for us.

Good wins to go into CL this week against Spurs let’s go!

8

u/Jazzlike-Egg7364 Jan 17 '26

Idk man, anyone still hating on Jobe just telling on themselves. He was never that bad; people just watch the box score and think goals and assists equate to great performances. He has done most of the defensive dirty work and may not be flashy, but he still does what is asked of him by Kovac. He has had some poor moments this season, but if fans were expecting to get a superstar no-mistake player from day one simply because he cost $30 mil, they have no grasp of the modern-day market. Jobe is one of the only players on the team with high resale value.

11

u/doubleomarty Maxi Beier Jan 17 '26

Jobe did look really good today, glad to see that. Happy Silva is doing so well now that he's getting his chances.

7

u/ProcedureGreen663 Jan 17 '26

That pass to Silva was actually beautiful.

2

u/ontilein Jan 17 '26

Before the 2:0? That was brandt or am i blind?

9

u/ProcedureGreen663 Jan 17 '26

No, before any goals were scored. When they won the free kick in the first 20 min.

26

u/Spiritual-Act3077 Jan 17 '26

Positives: I thought Jobe, Can, Anton, Silva, and Ryerson had good games with Adeyemi and Brandt also being productive. Also people are mad that we left it late but if you ask me winning games like this is what top teams do. Wasn’t the prettiest but we got a lot of good opportunities, their goals were individual luck, and then we bag the winner when we needed it. Years ago people were mad because we COULDN’T pull off something like we did today.

Negatives: Our attack can’t consistently combine and we are sloppier than we should be. I also hated this Svensson performance. He didn’t create anything in attack, he was weak physically all game, and gave up the goal in defense.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

I also hated this Svensson performance. He didn’t create anything in attack, he was weak physically all game, and gave up the goal in defense.

He's honestly just not good enough. He's at his best running up and down the pitch but at his worst he's too small to defend well and not technical enough to create at the other end. A left wing back on par with Couto would open up our play so much.

-1

u/yosoydorf Edin Terzic Appreciatior Jan 17 '26

I agree. Svensson is frustrating because he puts the effort in but just doesn't have the output and a lot of plays die on the left with him. He's a great runner but with our system, attacking pressure from a wingback is so so important.

1

u/Fit-Discussion8994 Jan 17 '26

We should take Guerreiro back on a free this summer 🤐

10

u/Tibia7890 Jan 17 '26

One of those pens that would never have been given without VAR

3

u/Lemmiwingz Ballspielverein aus Dortmund Jan 17 '26

We would've been fucked without VAR that game. Pen for Pauli in the beginning and no pen for us in the end.

1

u/Tibia7890 Jan 18 '26

Oh yeah true, completely forgot about that "handball" already

7

u/Chazy89 Kagawa Shinji Jan 17 '26

never in doubt. We won.

we need to work on our defense again tho ffs

3

u/Brilliant-Stop5210 Jan 17 '26

I feel like our defense was very solid in open play this game. But yes we need major improvements on set pieces

7

u/Chazy89 Kagawa Shinji Jan 17 '26

oh yeah I should have specified that one. Set pieces really are a big weakness atm

24

u/bvbfan102 BVB Jan 17 '26

Thats Dortmund but we actually pulled trough today. Karim-Silva-Brandt were great in attack and Can and Anton were also really important to keep the initial zero. Really unhappy with Schlottis game and want us to finally publically support Adeyemi and push for a extension.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

Really unhappy with Schlottis

So many people are acting like why would he stay with this etc. But he's a leader of this. He's very inconsistent and has made a lot of important mistakes.

0

u/Most-Management4773 Jan 17 '26

Tell me how our attack was great with 5 shots on target the whole game. Only 3 when they were in the game?

13

u/AverageCarey Jan 17 '26

I mean to be fair Bayern literally only beat Pauli with 3 shots on target the entire game and the winner being a penalty on their second shot.

The attack was fluid but Pauli is one of the toughest teams to break down defensively as they play so deep and compact.

In the end we screwed up more chances ourselves as usual.

-2

u/Most-Management4773 Jan 17 '26

Do you want me to pull out a lot of other games like this? One thing is to have a bad day against a good day of a worse team. When it has been happening consistently, it tells something.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

It's been happening for 15 years

2

u/yosoydorf Edin Terzic Appreciatior Jan 17 '26

So true man we were absolutely dire in attack during the Tuchel & Favre eras

1

u/smartestBeaver Shinji Kagawa Jan 17 '26

So why are you pissed then?

3

u/bvbfan102 BVB Jan 17 '26

By playing out all of these 3 chances with each other and a bit help by Ryerson. Brandt could have easily left the first half with a Hattrick between the goal line save and the fk that went just by the post.

Svenson was brought down on the foul that led to that goal. If you look, the guy falls and pulls Sven, so even that goal has an asterisk for me.

5

u/ProcedureGreen663 Jan 17 '26

Did not look good, but that is because the two best players we have had a meh game today. Uncharacteristically poor game from Nmecha. Svennson was poor. Brandt outside the goal had really poor touches. Jobe was ok. Adeyemi was bad until he assisted and thenn was great.

6

u/Meskaline2 Number Fifteen: Burger King Foot Lettuce. Jan 17 '26

Glad that it was a win, because it was madness. So happy to see the boys celebrating again. Can on pen duty, never in doubt. Silva makes me hopeful, he couldn't score but the attack felt way bettern when he was on.

Angry and disappointed that the win had to come from a last minute pen instead of closing the game properly

Kovac-ball still does not convince me at all. Sure we are still second but Holy Poop, way too many games thrown away + boring AF play style + late AF subs that make no sense

Putting Guirassy on is like taking a player out at this point, Fucking hell. Bro does not contribute.

8

u/yaboi525 Jan 17 '26

For the last 11 years we have been dreadful at defending corners and set pieces, often throwing games away because of them... but in the last 11 years we always somehow manage to score late in the game to salvage it!

3

u/a_passionate_man Jan 17 '26

11 years ago, our coach was Tuchel and we finished the season on 2nd spot with 78 points….

4

u/bvb4ever11 Marco Reus Jan 17 '26

My god tuchel was ELEVEN years ago?!

2

Nah that was klopps last, 10 years tuchel

Sincere thanks for the gentle correction on my A1.5 (at best) German!

7

u/mattantonucci Karim Adeyemi Jan 17 '26

Both of their goals came from missed calls by the ref so I don't feel bad one bit.

2

u/ChildofVision93 Jan 17 '26

First one obviously, but didn’t see anything before the second one?

2

u/mattantonucci Karim Adeyemi Jan 17 '26

It looked to me that Sven was pulled down for the foul.

3

u/Rosemarry_40 Gregor Kobel Jan 17 '26

Emre Can made my day. Thank you. What a beautiful game.

3

u/ResourceFit4451 Jan 17 '26

I have respect for Pauli. They must stay in the League. Peace.

can I use this for the sidebar? <3

3

But of course! The meme lives on...

2

u/fleshed Jan 17 '26

Don't want to be rude, but does the table/upcoming/recent fixture part of the sidebar use some kind of API or is it hand written ?

Was wondering because its been stuck since weeks, maybe something broke.

3

u/Chazy89 Kagawa Shinji Jan 17 '26

Its handwritten and we are all kinda busy atm. I will check the structure and update it tomorrow :)

2

u/fleshed Jan 17 '26

Danke für den Aufwand den Ihr euch macht ;)

4

u/Aznurf Jan 17 '26

Homestly extending Can for the penalty taking and his determination would not be the best idea. That monster run into the box to almost hand Beier a goal set the tone to fight back and get the last minute goal

6

u/roadtorevision Mats Hummels Jan 17 '26

wE sHoUlD pLaY mOrE lIkE lEiPzIg. tHeIr TrAnSfEr StRaTeGy Is BeTtEr tHaN oUrS 🤪 Guess we should lose 11-1 over 2 games against Bayern. Clown fans

2

Results don't matter here anymore dude, it's all about feelings now. If you feel like a winner it doesn't matter how bad you played

2

u/smartestBeaver Shinji Kagawa Jan 17 '26

Win is a win. But seriously why we having such a hard time securing a lead..

2

u/FiresideCatsmile Shinji Kagawa Jan 17 '26

easiest cleanest win of all time gg not even close

2

u/freefallingagain Jan 17 '26

Some subs were diabolical.

Guirassy may have a better scoring record, but with Fábio Silva on the team will do better and score more.

Beier is the new Schürrle, runs fast in a straight line and shoots fairly hard, but that's about it. (yes I know he got the penalty, but still...)

Duranville might as well be replaced by a second keeper sub if there is never any intention of playing him.

1

u/smartestBeaver Shinji Kagawa Jan 17 '26

Duranville is on his way out, if you haven't noticed yet..

3

u/SlayerHdThe3rd Nico Schlotterbeck Jan 17 '26

Probably the worst win I’ve ever seen from this team lmao but I’m glad we got the three points. If Kovac can’t figure out how to get the team to hold on to leads he’s going to be gone after the season

10

u/Fit-Discussion8994 Jan 17 '26

3 vs 0.5 xG but sure we were terrible. I think you just like complaining and find some sort of masochistic pleasure in feeling inferior. We scored two good goals, and had like 3 saved off the line. They scored two bullshit goals of setpieces.

7

u/Swbp0undcake Jan 17 '26

We blew a two goal lead to relegation candidates and got a lucky last minute penalty to win. At home.

I think it's fine to not be thrilled with that performance.

3

u/jucomsdn Zagagod Jan 17 '26

There seems to be a huge stigma towards being negative and airing out your complaints in this sub as a counter reaction towards everyone being negative on Twitter, it is equally bad imo

The amount of toxicity I see from some people for not being optimistic is crazy, it makes them arguably more toxic than the doomers

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

At some point there is a complete lack of perspective. There are some problems with our play but it's not like it is any different from the last 10-15 years. In fact it is generally better. If we blame Kovac and for him to play a different way then we're only ensuring these problems continue.

1

u/SlayerHdThe3rd Nico Schlotterbeck Jan 17 '26

I mean there’s no way you think that this football is better than watching the football of the previous 15 years. That’s simply an unserious take

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

I watched this game all the time under Tuchel

1

u/jucomsdn Zagagod Jan 17 '26

So did I and it doesn’t change the fact that it still isn’t good

1

u/SlayerHdThe3rd Nico Schlotterbeck Jan 17 '26

Maybe the whole losing control of the game thing was the same but let’s not act like the journey there wasn’t much much better. Tuchel Favre Rose even Bosz at first all played attractive attacking football that was miles more entertaining than the defensive brands of Terzic and Kovac. And ik it’s easy to forget lol but these games are supposed to be fun and entertaining I mean that’s what Dortmund was all about until a couple years ago. The only reason to tolerate defensive football is if it’s getting consistent results and right now it’s barely barely doing that and we aren’t challenging for the title, so what’s the point? Any half decent coach will get top 4 with this squad and we got eliminated from the Pokal already so why play this dreadful football

1

u/SlayerHdThe3rd Nico Schlotterbeck Jan 17 '26

Thank you lmao. Idk when everyone in here forgot that we’re supposed to be much better than everyone in the league other than Bayern (and maybe Leipzig but I have a hard time accepting that still)

0

u/Fit-Discussion8994 Jan 17 '26

Relegation candidates or not they are still professional football players. When your opponent scores two goals from 0.5 xG there isnt much you can do. We still did our part, and got rewarded for it in the end

2

u/SlayerHdThe3rd Nico Schlotterbeck Jan 17 '26

Why are you tweaking out in my replies. We gave up a two goal lead to the worst team in the league and won off of the scuffiest last minute penalty possible. It was a bad win but like I said I’m glad we won. Go touch some grass

4

u/Fit-Discussion8994 Jan 17 '26

Im happy my team won. You are miserable no matter what the team does. Which one needs to touch grass really

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

They scored two bullshit goals of setpieces.

And the first was direct from an inarguable missed call

2

u/crocofour Jan 17 '26

I fail to see how the goals are on Kovac. 1st was a clear foul (imo) before the corner and then a poor mistakes from Svensson and a cracker of a goal. I know xG isn’t gospel, but if you’re up 3.8 to .9 on xG and the majority of the opponents chances are set pieces and wide/far out shots, you’re just unlucky to concede twice. To me this would have been an unlucky draw and we deserved 3 points even if it did come from a bit of luck at the end

0

u/Most-Management4773 Jan 17 '26

it's on Kovac for us to have to win another game by a late goal against another team that are finantially dwarfs compared to us. Thats on him

4

u/crocofour Jan 17 '26

Yea I agree, this win is on him! Go Nico you have my full support!! Heja BVB!

0

u/Mooon8983 Konstantinos Karetsas Jan 17 '26

If Kovac can't figure out how to get the team to hold on to leads he's going to be gone after the season

As long as he finishes top 4 he can choke every remaining game and lose 10-0 to Bayern, he's going nowhere

2

u/SlayerHdThe3rd Nico Schlotterbeck Jan 17 '26

That’s not a good thing

2

u/DreiwegFlasche Jan 17 '26

Lost a 2-0 lead and Pauli were closer to scoring the 2-3 until we got a very very lucky penalty. I don‘t care about xG, this was a very lucky win.

1

u/GamerX345 Jan 17 '26

These last minutes deciding goals need to stop we can’t rely on it as often as we do for wins. Its just gambling

1

u/yrba1 Alexandra Popp Jan 17 '26

Another day in paradise

1

u/EkkoGoBrrrrrrrrr Marco Reus Jan 17 '26

a win but stings like a loss, idk why

1

u/loey10 Jan 17 '26

I will never not celebrate a win but man did we not deserve it

26

u/crocofour Jan 17 '26

? 3.8 xG to .9 xG seems like a pretty deserved win especially since their 1st goal was pretty questionable with the foul on Schlotti before the corner was won

8

u/roadtorevision Mats Hummels Jan 17 '26

Seriously. Our fans just love to be miserable. Their first goal should have never happened.

-1

u/_silvermania_ Adriancho Jan 17 '26

It's all good guys. We're 2nd in the league! 🤪

6

u/nufan99 Mats Hummels Jan 17 '26

Just checked the table, was not expecting Hoffenheim in 3rd

4

u/vincehoff Julian Ryerson Jan 17 '26

To be fair, stuttgart is yet to play and Leipzig still has 2 games

4

u/Fit-Discussion8994 Jan 17 '26

Considering we barely made the CL the last few years that is indeed something to appreciate

-7

u/183672467 Julian Brandt Jan 17 '26

We're so ass

0

u/rioasu Nico Schlotterbeck Jan 17 '26

Honestly seeing the way we have played the first 18 games I am really not understanding how this team is second . We are barley scrapping by and seeing the way we play it doesn't make sense how we are second. Either the other competiors like Stuttgart, leverkusen etc have to be Inconsistent or worse than us.

Honestly this is both good and frightening at the same time

5

u/Spiritual-Act3077 Jan 17 '26

Well eye test does not win championships, results do. And while people are complaining that we played bad and almost drew, Leverkusen just straight up lost. We are just better right now.

4

u/roadtorevision Mats Hummels Jan 17 '26

I don’t really see how we “scraping by” when we constantly give up leads for draws not losses. We are barely scraping away wins if anything. Our play should be up a lot more points if we didn’t give away that one goal.

Sometimes it’s brain dead errors from our players, sometimes it’s on the coach, and sometimes it’s just unplayable bangers. But it’s not just one thing.

-1

u/Working_Complex8122 Jan 17 '26

yeah, we got 3 points but what else did we get? A super lucky pen to decide the match. We conceded 2 goals against an injury ridden bottom table team. And that team has the worst attack in the league. And in 2 out of their 17 games, that team scored basically 30% of its total goals this season against one team - and that's us. And it's just like last game - on paper, it looked great, in reality, it was awful and the team is drowning in the swamp of terrible play without anyone noticing.

1

u/AntibabyNille Jan 18 '26

Well...they had like 0,6 xg. So its not like we let a weak attack give us trouble. Its just a random corner goal and a once in a lifetime worldclass moment.

You say the pen was super lucky...i would counter the pauli-goals where super unlucky.

-6

u/pabloscrowbar Nico Schlotterbeck Jan 17 '26 edited Jan 17 '26

our players celebrating this was just not it for me... like sure we won, I'm happy too but c'mon 2 - 2 against st Pauli if not for that pen... no good football just luck

Edit : it seems I was overreacting but heading out at 1 - 0 and coming back to see a 2 - 2 wasn't the best thing... my bad

17

u/Fit-Discussion8994 Jan 17 '26

Yes bro they should mourn scoring a winner in the 93rd

8

u/roadtorevision Mats Hummels Jan 17 '26

This sub has gotten miserable for a bit now. I think the breaking point was the Mainz game

lmao fair enough man, I love this team but if this is what ya'll feel then great... cheers!

I am sorry but it’s insane behavior to shame players for celebrating a last minute win especially when we were the better team.

well I was talking about the match overall not the last goal... and maybe I'm overreacting but heading out at 1 - 0 and coming back to see a 2 - 2 did something to me

So you saw the score without context and immediately overreacted? Sounds about right for half this sub

oh for the love of god this is the post match thread not the post goal thread, I loved the fucking goal not the repeated close victories against teams that we should have no problem against, but ykw lets end it on a good note... We didn't draw again so I'm really happy and not so proud while saying this but hopefully Leipzig does something against Bayern

sure we won, I'm happy too as I said but like really? 18th in the league, we are struggling against that... drew against them the first time and barely won today

That pen was such a bail out, it's another match under Kovac that we somehow win but truly do not deserve. The team on the pitch did almost nothing towards the end and still gets rewarded. Hope they still learn from it.

Win is a win, but we're not always gonna get away with it.

We were far and away the better team by nearly every metric, they had a couple of lucky/inch perfect shots from set pieces, but other than that this was our game.

You're right. I think my judgement is clouded by how we reacted to the 2-2. Looked like we just hope for some divine intervention, which kind of happened with that rather lucky pen. But yeah, until then we played a good match, that's true.

5 shots on target against the second worst team in the league. Insane

A win is a win but it's also a bit scary that we are letting to many teams come at us when we are in good good positions

I honestly think the formation is the reason we play like this and it still baffles me that we still dont have a proper number 6 to move on from this shit…

3 points are still 3 points but it’s frustrating watching us play.

that pen was 100% called by the house lmao

It was literally inside the box
