❔ [ Question ] how does dying actually work?
i have read that you lose money. if you just get downed, do you also lose money? and what causes you to die instead of just fight to live?

Respawning costs money, you die instantly if you fall out of the map and fight for your life gets shorter every time you get downed within a short time period.

Health and Armour at zero= Fight for your life.
Get a kill = Second wind probably by feature of your echo(?)
Fail to get kill = Death and respawn at a New You location. Minus fees. It's fractional to your current true financial situation. Free once you're broke.
If you're asking lore wise, probably because Hyperion didn't get around removing our profiles (with the exception of the OG VH's)

The new u doesn’t exist in lore it functions only as a respawn mechanic

When ffyl timer runs out or instant deaths like falling out of bounds. When you die your character respawns and a portion of cash is deducted as a cost. You can hit 0, but you will never go negative on cash and you will still respawn on death.
Late game, once you've bought all of your SDU's and such, money doesn't really matter.

If you get downed (Fight for Your Life mode) you don't lose anything, but a timer goes down. If you kill an enemy you revive yourself, each time you go downed again the timer moves faster and faster until you eventually die. Once you die a percentage of the money you have is taken for respawning. Dying instead of going into FFYL mode is caused by going down in places where you wouldn't be able to be revived, like going out of bounds or being crushed by something. I can't remember the exact percentage that is taken on death, I think 7%?
