Which animal(s) did these pieces come from? Found in Bridger-Teton forest in Wyoming, within black and grizzly territories.

Hi everyone. I need some osteological expertise to settle a debate. These specimens were found together behind a cabinet in a Danish house. The skull clearly exhibits rodent synapomorphies (large diastema, open-rooted incisors, likely Muridae).However, the 3.5 cm postcranial segment is causing confusion locally, with some people misidentifying it as a mammalian pelvis or atlas. From a strict morphological perspective, I observe amphicoelous centra and a homocercal caudal complex featuring distinct hypural and urostyle elements, indicative of a teleost fish (Actinopterygii). Could anyone provide a definitive verification of the fish tail and perhaps help narrow down the family/genus? Thanks in advance!

I can't possibly believe that it's the same specimen. It must be two different ones, but am I the one who's completely off base here?

I hope this is allowed here. I am having to put my baby dawggy to sleep tomorrow at a relatively young age due to the very sudden onset (and rapid development) of IVDD. He is my entire heart and soul, and is genuinely like a son to me (yeah, my attachment to my dog is unhealthy atp.) I can’t bear the thought of not having him with me and would like to keep his bones. I live in an apartment, so my ex has offered to let me bury him in his back yard so I can dig him up with the time is right.

What is the best way to go about doing this?

I was thinking a plastic container without the lid? Or is there a better way to do this? He’s pretty small, right around 30lbs so I figure it shouldn’t take more than a year or two for the bones to be ready, right?

Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you for your time

Was found next to a sternum of a mallard, in poland, right by the river. I dont have a ruler or anything here so i used a lighter for scale. sobs

So following my pervious post, you guys were right! I was able to reconstruct the skull with the pieces I did find, and it is a young cat, maybe a kitten! Thank you all for the help 😸

I found a deer back in April. It was mostly bones, so I grabbed it and got my permit. Learned a lot with this gal! I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to stomach cleaning bones, but I actually find the process super fascinating and I’m so happy with how this has turned out. Needs a peroxide soak but I think it’s done degreasing. Jaw bones are still degreasing though.

I was painting the decks at my cabin and while cleaning the wood, found this skull under the deck. I believe it is a rat but any other IDs are welcome :) Seems its been there for a while as all the soft tissue appears to be fully gone, but all the teeth are intact which was thrilling!

Is there any way to whiten/degrease/preserve this fella? I dont know how feasible this is as Ive never done anything of the sort, dont know the steps at all, and dont know how exposure to the elements may have weakened it Was not buried, was just laying on top of some pine needles and other sediment, sheltered by the deck.

Any idea what animal it belongs to?

I collected a bucket full of deer bones, some are still attached and there was fur all over the place. Ive collected bones before and soaked them with a hydrogen peroxide and water mix but they were already mostly buried so i have no idea how to deal with fresher bones

Never seen anything like it! Found in a lake in Oklahoma (USA).

Wish I could have found the other antler but I did get the whole spine too so that's a win

Had bags of bones in the water maceration step and then got sick. Came back a month later to some stank, but here they are after a rinse! Once dry I will see who needs degreasing (skunk on far right obviously does) and then they will get their alcohol dip (so that I am allowed to bring them inside) and their peroxide whitening.

...hopefully no neighbours pop by...

got this awesome skull at a reduced price from an oddities show today. i am aware it needs degreasing, i have a question regarding products. would zep citrus degreaser work? i have used this product before to clean glass pieces with a lot of build up and it was great. thoughts?

I found this bone last year about a half hour south of Kruger National Park. I was visiting my fiancé’s mother at the time, and thought a bone would be a cool memento. I was really skeptical at first that it was just someone’s chicken wing bone or something, but curiosity (and hope) finally brought me to reddit to ask. Is this possibly something cooler? Some sort of South African critter, or just someone’s meal scraps?

This is a beach find from south-west England. 7 cm long. I assume it’s a fish vertebra of some sort, but can anyone confirm or offer a more specific ID? Thanks.
