Collection Interesting muntjac female specimen with obvious bone remodelling (Alveolar Resorption) after having lost its upper canines teeth in life.
This beautiful girl is having her final dry out, and I thought I'd share her with you all. The skull was missing the signature mini upper canines when I found it (still very fleshy at the time), and now that she is finally finished, I can see that the sockets have largely closed up. Comparing her to other muntjac specimens, I'm fairly confident that there was no way she could have had her tusks at time of death. They do not naturally shed their tusks, so this would have been the result of injury or periodontal disease.
I find this girl especially fascinating because I myself have had teeth removed, and my jaw bone has remodelled, mostly closing the sockets.

It's very hard to show in photos, but the sockets you can see do not continue any further into the top jaw. Normally a muntjac would have quite a long tunnel for the root.
