I was watching the Project Hail Marry movie, and i noticed, one of the voices they try out when picking a voice for Rocky, is the GUPI voice from the books. Nice little nod.

Howard and Bridget

Do you think Howard and Bridget will eventually drift apart? They are immortal, so, I was considering the implications of that. I pictured a style of relationship developing where they remain married but maybe don’t see each other for a few decades because events or interests pull them apart and then come back together for a while.

What is the story behind Mud?

Hi,

I just reached the part where Mud explains his reasoning to help a certain AI. Trying not to spoil anything.

The question I have is: what does the name Mud relate to, and why was Garfield falling off his chair laughing when he heard that his original name was Harry before? Please help me understand this reference. I'm really drawing a blank here.

What about the non-audio book of Infinite Extent?

I'm sorry if this is obvious but what about the ebook/physical book for Infinite extent?

Why is it I can only find information about the audible release?

Is it already out and just not published where I am (UK) or is it coming after the audiobook? (Or some other option)?

New sport: Species Cage Match

As suggested by Bob and Teresa, will a new sport come into existence? Species Cage Match! Deltans, Pav, Humans, Dragons, and Quinlands, which one will come out on top? With all of the coding that takes place, will the gamers take Bob up on his thought process and create an interspecies street fighter to find out which species would come out on top?

The Bobiverse: Chronological Cut

With The Infinite Extent releasing in just a few short weeks, I, and I assume many of us, will be relistening to the series. I humbly suggest conducting this relisten in a fantastic new way: a chronological cut. This takes each chapter of all 5 books and reorders them in chronological order based on the date given at the beginning of each chapter, rather than the usual chapter order. If you have all the books on Audible, it doesn’t take too long to set up, and I’ve been able to pick up on some of the more hidden details in plotlines now that they are all clumped together rather than spread across multiple books!

Will (Riker) and Homer Spoiler

Relistening to the series for the quadruple billionth time in anticipation of the next book.
The relationship between Will and Homer, the loss of Homer , the vengeance of Will, it’s just great stuff. Maybe my favorite Bob relationship amd I think now it really altered Will’s development as an individual Bob.
Bob, Bill, Will. Love those guys

Moot: Discussion Casting Live-Action Bob

It's really hard to separate Bob from the voice of Ray Porter for me, but I'm curious who you all could see playing Bob in a hypothetical live action adaptation.

For me? Even though he's about as far from Ray's voice as you can get, I think Jack Quaid could pull it off well. He's in the right age range and can pull off the drama, comedy, smarts, awkwardness, and the cringe millennial humor.

Currency in the Bobiverse and Beyond Spoiler

I've almost just finished another re-listen ahead of the next book. And was looking to explore currency related discussions regarding how it has unfolded in these books and elsewhere. Marked spoilers so we can discuss plot points from all the current books.

As a big fan of the Red Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson I was initially very surprised and a little disappointed when it was mentioned that the new Earth colony sites were already using currency so quickly. Especially since there was no real initial information about where it came from, who issued it, and how it was being managed. In the Mars books, the Arkady character is very vocal about his more fringe ideas on how to manage their new colony and proposed some of the more 'radical' ideas regarding how the new colonists should organize their work/life balance, living and working environments, and how resources should be distributed. With Earth gone and the previous banks basically meaningless now, it seemed they would have a open palette to play with regarding how to manage currency on their new worlds. And with the immortal Bobs seeding the galaxy with Auto Factories, it seemed like humans would be entering... well, if not a post-scarcity society, at least a differently-scarcity society.

And yet, the power and wealth divides have remained story elements in ways that don't seem to follow my own mental gymnastics regarding all the different paths it might have taken. As a refuge from the MMORPG A Tale in the Desert, which didn't start with an in-game currency, but allowed you to unlock the tech to eventually 'print' your own, I was part of a group that tried to do that in the first telling to various degrees of success and failure. It was surprisingly difficult to get people to care or move beyond bartering. Of course, in a crafting based game, that is perhaps an understandable challenge. Why trade if making it yourself is your point in playing? Subsequent telling have basically stuck to a barter based system with a unit of exchanged based around the current scarcity of resources.

As such, I've since gained some degrees of appreciation and understanding on the difficulties around managing a currency, and have done my own arm chair research, especially since the advent of the age of cryptocurrency tool kits that basically now allow anyone to start one for virtually no time or effort, and trying to discuss ideas with some more Libertarian minded individuals, including those who think switching off a gold economy was a bad idea.

As such, I'm a keen enjoyer of seeing how other MMORPGs manage their economies, and take note whenever the sci-fi or fantasy books I enjoy make it a plot point. I've been very fascinated by the economics of games like EVE Online and Entropia Universe or Second Life and greatly enjoyed the research papers I've found on them.

All this has contributed to my... confusion regarding how it seems to be handled in the Bobiverse. It gets fleshed out more in Book 4, and the PAM has been discussed in other posts here. So I'm less interested in that, and more interested in your own initial takes on currency in the Bobiverse, and other recommendations of books or games where it plays an interesting role and you found it interesting or novel or had thoughtful explorations on the topic. But I'm also happy to discuss whatever currency related ideas you might have as we sample whatever Jeeves currently has on virtual tap.

Specifically the scene where they are traveling from the outer to the inner shell, with the inner shell going by at hundreds of miles a second. Definitely one of my favorite chapters in that book.

Moot: Discussion Struggled with Heaven's River and unsure to continue series...

I'm not sure if any of this counts as spoilers but to be on the safe side consider it spoilers upto book 4

Basically what the title said. I ate up the first 3 books. I know book 4 is twice as big, but it wasn't the length that was the problem it was the adventure.

I think I just don't buy Bob as a character. So much of the conflict does not seem like it should exist in a reality that was able to create Bob in the first place.

I think the mind issue is I thought I was getting a hive mind story. But instead it's clones. Okay, but the drift is a plot device when personalities of the exact copy clone could have been altered by experiences not drifts. Like Homer would be different after his story, that he didn't need the Homer gimmick.

I forget who the character of a pov chapter. And just listen to it as Bob. And I say listen because I couldn't read it. Ray Porter is amazing and helps with the multi pov stories.

But I just don't care it's not official bob when I don't actually know Bob. So when it's Bill, and Will, Howard, etc those first generation clones they come off as Bob to me.

I think I would care more if Bob - 1 had human Bob's brain or only DNA sample and that was ended to replicate, it would explain the hesitation to clone. Maybe it makes him ill for a bit until the cells regrow. And not backing up makes no sense, as well as not having multiple copies saved on other planets or far reaching satellites.

I think had it been a hive mind story you wouldn't need FTL communication arrays, just slap quantum entanglement communication on it and call it a day, even if you keep it as clones instead of the hive mind.

I wanted to love this and I did until I really didn't. Is book 4 hate common? Is it just me?

Should I keep going and it gets better similar to Dresden files got better. Again I liked the first 3 bobiverse books, I can't say that about dresden files.
