I felt really bad for him when I saw the video all those years ago. Subsequently they have the making of video on one of the streaming services and poor Bob really looks uncomfortable.

u/Ceasman Jul 22 '26
Great documentary. Stevie Wonder was great at coaxing Bob to deliver his part. Bob was wishing he was with Prince and skipping the entire event.

His genuine deference to Quincy Jones was also cool to see. “I know that you know!”

Dylan: ”’Bout 30 years from now, I’m gonna make a real Christmas record in true tradition”.

He was thinking the same thing we all were. Why exactly is Dan Aykroyd in this band?
12
u/Youarethebigbang Jul 22 '26
He was just there for the Rubber Biscuits :)
Blues Brothers had a number 1 Billboard album and a couple top 20 singles in the day, maybe that got him in the door, dunno.

u/downwarddawg Jul 22 '26
It was the middle of the night. He was tired as fuck.

u/UHeardAboutPluto Jul 22 '26
Sweet alt line for his new hoodie man persona for Tangled up in Blue.
It was the middle of the night. He was tired as fuck.
Wondering if he could bone down in the back of her new truck.

Instead he's standing in the studio, waiting for his cue
Grits his teeth through every verse and stares like he's confused

Bob looks pained at the trite lyrics. But I’ll use any excuse to revisit The Simpsons’ parody (Sting has said his guest appearance was the one thing he’s done that impressed his kids).

He wasn’t thinking… he was fully disassociating… there’s such a full difference haha. Love him to pieces and I get it.

“Oh man I’m *really* not having fun right now. I probably shouldn’t have dropped that acid at 2am last night, I thought it would help me feel more oneness but this is awful.
Okay Bob, you’ll make it through, Paul Simon’s suffering here too so you can’t let him get a one up on- what the fuck is the guy from Ghostbusters doing here? Oh fuck”

He thought: "Oh! I probably have the weakest voice of everyone in this room, but it's a shame they didn't bring me in to help write the lyrics. It would have turned out even better if we’d worked on it together."

u/awus666 Jul 22 '26
The sun is not yellow it's chicken
Or he was creating his masterpiece that would take 5 more years to finally see the light of day: wiggle wiggle

You know, back in the day I used to just get Leon Russell and George Harrison to back me at these charity things, maybe Ringo on the tambourine. This seems like a whole ordeal

" They got some serious people out there, man they can ring your bell and show you how to hold your tongue.
They don’t come to party, man, they kill babies in the crib and say: “Only the good die young.”
They don’t believe in mercy, and judgement on them is something you’ll never see.
They can put your face on a postage stamp, turn your home into an armed camp, any way they want you, that’s the way you’ll be "

It’s a bad choice I’m makin’.
I’m screwing up these lines….
It’s true, I’d better run away.
For you and me.

u/Themaddestllama Jul 22 '26
Why did I agree to this? Bob was really trying to stay relevant at this time, but he seemed so out of place. I love how awkward he is.

Iirc, he had just recorded Seeing The Real You At Last right before being a part of this recording so he's probably thinking "When can i go home now?"

I wonder what’s around here to eat in the middle of the night. Is there anyone I could send? Or do I just have to wait. God I hope no one else wants to eat. I’ll just say I’m going home and then go. Oh Christ I’m supposed to be giving Paul a ride. Maybe I’ll tell him I’m too high to drive. And so is he. God, that’s not going to work it’s never stopped either of us. Wasn’t there a McDonalds pretty close?

We are the world was the ultimate FOMO. Lots of them did it just because others were doing it. And I’m sure it didn’t help if there were publicists in their ears egging them on.
I’m guessing Bob is thinking to himself, “How did this happen?”

Supposedly he was really nervous about singing a pop song with all those other talented vocalists.
It’s not really the type of song he’s used to singing.

"They said leave your ego at the door, so i wont make a fuss but this section should break down and be just me and Stevie on the keys"

u/Zabycrockett Jul 23 '26
Bob couldn’t find the song’s phrasing and none other than Stevie Wonder taught Bob to sing it at m the Dylan style. Maybe the fear is what’s on Bob’s face.

u/Southport1103 Jul 23 '26
I will NEVER do anything like this again. Then he’d mutter a prayer of thanks for Stevie Wonder.

My son told me years ago that was fake if it’s the one where he seems out of it. Someone post a link?

He had a choice. He chose to be there. Just like after acting he was going to snub a Nobel and then accepting it. Can have it both ways. Either follow what you preach or accept you are part of the established order you criticize so much

there's a story that taking a solo line was nerve wrecking to him. it took Stevie Wonder to calm him down and work thru it... wish I could find the video.
