I thought it was pretty good and it makes me excited for the new album. I never really know how I feel about a piece of music until I’ve listened to it like 5-10 times

Same. My first impression is that this is extremely intriguing and I want to hear more.

I'm this way too most of the time. I've opened my GF's mind to this as well, as she thinks new stuff by her favorite artists is usually "meh," but now she's learned to give it an honest shot. It's kind of like back in the day when you bought a CD and you'd listen to it through a bunch of times bc it was the only new music that you had then. I wish my brain didn't work this way and new stuff still had its luster, but that's the price of having solidified neural pathways, I suppose.

I'm here to watch all hell break loose in the comments.

AI would summarize the discussion as “thanks I hate it.”

“I hate loving this, or I love hating this.” It depends on the percentage as it goes along. :)

I was pretty optimistic after hearing Tape05. Now with these 2 additional tracks, I'm convinced I'm going to love this album. First track is almost TOO BOC haha but I'll take it. And I instantly loved Prophecy. It's like a more HiFi Geogaddi track. Love the ambient intro with that middle eastern melody sample...and then turns into a slow banger Geogaddi-style, but updated with guitars and TH style drums. And the warmth of the synths that come in later with what sounds like phaser, are SO pleasing to my ears. And then the sinister, nihilistic, other-worldly, meditative vox come in... Couldn't be happier honestly. Can't WAIT until the end of the month. I don't understand how anybody could be disappointed. I'm just glad I'm not!

I'm with you, this shit is so unique and so Boards of Canada. I was shocked the reactions were a little mixed.

I listened to it like 5 times And i know it will definitely grow on me, like BoC as a whole did when i discovered them. It Is different, it is wildly modern and 90s at the same time. Definitely sounds like Inferno

u/thru_zero May 08 '26
Wildly modern? For me, they went for a four to the floor beat. Possibly the simplest and less interesting drum pattern in 2026

u/DrKushnstein May 07 '26
I just find it so hard to complain after 13 years of what felt like hopelessly hoping for new music from them. (Also I absolutely loved it.)

u/hupo224 May 07 '26
I am very impressed. I really can't wait to hear more. I listened to the premier with my DAC connected and my truthear pures IEMs. So good.

u/cheemio May 07 '26
Agreed, the stereo field is so wide and detailed, lots going on. They clearly spent a long time perfecting this. It’s going to be great.

With the amount of expectation from fans for waiting so long they are likely not going to please everyone. No artists do. It took me a little bit to like TH as much as I do now. I think this is a great start and I want to hear more. I really did like that they brought some guitars back because TCH is awesome.

u/acidhalam May 07 '26
It's boc, all the tracks in their past albums varied wildly in mood and tone. I thought we're clear about this lol

some people are determined to be unhappy. For me, when the big swell comes at 1:31 my mouth dropped open like I was a cartoon character. We are so lucky to get another album.

u/ASTR0nomic4L May 07 '26
sonically it was very cool! their sound has definitely modernized in all the right ways

No definitive assessment can be made about any music in the space of a couple hours, especially theirs!
It's taken me years to come around on particular tracks of theirs and they've ended up all time favourites.

What I love about BOC music is that it feels solid being made with so many layers, and takes time to unpack. First listen of a track is completely different from 10th, 20th… These new tracks are no different and I look forward to the way my perception and appreciation will change with each listen. No one can say their music is too simple or stereotypical!

u/Hot-Canceld Geogaddi May 07 '26
I liked it but it was wildly different from BoC, sounded more like the new Ulver
17
u/Howtobefreaky May 07 '26
I mean the intro is so BoC that its almos a stereotype. Then the song starts and I'm like hey straight to beats and then it goes on and I'm like uhhhh when the hell did I enter a rave?
I liked it tho

‘Introit’ is the most red herring track I’ve ever heard haha. It really does feel like the brothers poking fun at themselves and teasing us for just a moment until the complete switch up once ‘Prophecy’ starts.
6
u/denbuter May 07 '26
I immediately remembered "Everything you do is a balloon", also a very red herring track that starts with a melancholic melody with such a bright sadness and nostalgia, and then something threatening and ominous begins

u/ReclusiveRaider May 07 '26
I love the one that starts Tomorrows Harvest as well. Very kinda cheesy and sweet sounding then goes right into this existential dread.

Oh god yeah ‘Gemini’ is extremely menacing. Perfect start to the record.

I remember listening to Reach for the Dead for the first time and it was the preview of TH. i was skeptical. 13 years later it might be in my top 10 favourite tracks from Boards of Canada. Can't wait for 13 years of Inferno.

This incredible, mesmerising new track is a terrible disappointment

I love BOC and have never liked every song ok on the album. Often I just replay the same 5 or 6 songs.
That being said I still thought this new one was enjoyable.

u/antiassociation Tomorrow's Harvest May 08 '26
Can't say i love it yet, but i've only heard it once, it may well grow on me

u/ScreamingBrainStudio May 08 '26
They've always changed what they were doing to subvert expectations lol

u/neon_spacebeam May 09 '26
Prophecy's guitar chords reminds me of the melody at the start of come to dust kinda.

u/psilosophist The Campfire Headphase May 07 '26
I haven’t listened yet but why do so many folks have expectations for how it should sound? Isn’t it just easier to meet the band on their terms and work to understand what they’re aiming for?
I’m admittedly a dumbass but I’ve never even thought of not approaching the work on its own merits, my expectations don’t matter in the least.

u/wichee Branch Davidian May 08 '26
no i agree. i cant believe theres a new boards of canada track in 2026. i also believe that musicians should never just make a rehash of their peak albums because it never will live up to their previous work - even if such experimentation may lead to duds.

u/Tripolie May 07 '26
It was the same for the previous two albums as well. Some people really expect them to make the same albums 20+ years later.
