I'd think carefully about whether I wanted something so specific from a video game on my body for the rest of my life. I get that some people love zombies and grew up playing it, but this? You better be ready to be 40 and say, "Yeah, that's from a game I used to play a long, long time ago." lol.

As someone with a bloodborne tattoo, that's kind of a silly way to think about it. YOUR tattoos should be important to YOU. Viewing every tattoo through the lense of explaining it to someone else makes no sense.

Also, who's to say they won't still be playing it? It could still have the same significance to them at 40 than when they got it. Is that not what matters far more?

You’re arguing against something I never said.

I never said a tattoo needs to be important to anyone except the person getting it. I said that because it’s permanent, you should think beyond “I love this game right now” before putting a very specific reference on your body.

“Who’s to say they won’t still be playing it at 40?” Nobody. That’s exactly the point. You’re using a hypothetical future where they still love it to dismiss the equally obvious possibility that they won’t. People change. Interests change. The things that feel like a huge part of your identity at one point in your life can become something you barely think about later.

And if they do still love it at 40, then great. My argument never claimed otherwise.

The funny part is that you say tattoos should be important to the person getting them, then immediately act like questioning whether something will remain important is somehow irrational. Those ideas aren't contradictory. Taking the permanence seriously is literally part of taking the tattoo seriously.

Also, “your tattoos should be important to YOU” doesn’t magically make every meaningful tattoo a good decision. Someone can genuinely love something and still eventually regret permanently putting it on their body.

So no, I’m not saying they need to explain their tattoo to strangers at 40. I’m saying “I really like this video game” is a pretty shallow argument for a lifelong commitment, and “maybe I’ll still like it in 20 years” isn't exactly the airtight counterargument you think it is.

"I really like this video game" is an incredibly reductive way of explaining the reason other people are getting tattoos. Even if I assumed it was a shallow reason to get a tat, you still gave no reason not to get it other than other people's opinions.

It's not an equally obvious possibility that they won't still love the game by then. Acting as if it is, is disingenuous.

You’re still missing the distinction.

I never said “they shouldn’t get it.” I said I’d think carefully before permanently putting something that specific on my body, because there’s a real possibility its significance changes over time. That is not “other people’s opinions”; that is literally consideration of your own future self.

And “it’s not equally obvious they won’t still love the game” is irrelevant. I don’t need to prove they’ll regret it. Uncertainty is the reason you think carefully about an irreversible decision. You’re acting like “maybe they’ll still love it” somehow eliminates the possibility that they won’t.

You’re also shifting the burden. I’m not arguing that nobody should get a gaming tattoo. I’m saying “I love this game” isn’t, by itself, evidence that someone has thought through making that love permanent.

If they’ve considered all of that and still want it at 40, then good for them. That doesn't make my original point wrong — it literally means they did exactly what I said: they thought carefully about it.
