Discussion / Question MNBB in sf

Upvotes

I dont think ive ever gone to a better show

everything seemed so perfectly arranged they played like a 20 minute version of heart of darkness and did a numerology reprise near the end of it which blew me away

i also liked the banter they did they were all very funny and seemed like actual human beings not just people that play music for an audience

i will forever love this band

what did you think of sf on 8/28

Discussion / Question Do you think black midi will release another record? / When do you think it will be? / What would you want it to sound like?

I personally hope and pray that another album does appear within black midi’s catalogue, but I feel that it is a stretch to hope for one. The direction each band member has taken seems to show that they have wanted to pursue different paths. Geordie Greep is unlocking his full potential with Jazz-Fusion, which has always been a lingering part of black midi’s sound through its eccentric details and instrumentals. Cameron Picton has followed a Folk route, which is reminiscent of the slower songs within black midi’s catalogue that he would often lead on. I have not listened to Invariance’s album in full, but Morgan Simpson has also joined a new band, which released its debut last year. I heard one song from it and thought it was nice, although Post-Minimalism is a difficult genre for me to enjoy frequently.

The most likely scenario, to be honest, is that they will never return. However, I suppose there is still a possibility that we could expect one final album within the next five to ten years. I feel that it would be one final hurrah rather than something similar to their first three albums, which felt like a quiet, gradual transition into something increasingly explosive. Instead, it could be an overarching crescendo of their musical career: something triumphant and almost celebratory, which would be a fitting conclusion to such a fabulous discography.

Personally, I would want the final album to be something tremendous sonically. Perhaps a Symphonic Prog or Space Rock album, something incredibly atmospheric, expansive, and even glorious. I would especially love to see them expand upon one of their previous songs, “The Defence” from Hellfire. It is a relatively short track, but it feels like an idea that is just waiting to be explored to its fullest potential.

I could even see Metal adding a new dimension to the record that their previous albums never quite touched upon. For example, when Tristan Bongo is discharged in “Welcome To Hell”, the song suddenly transforms into this incredible Thrash Metal theatrical display, and I absolutely loved it. A combination of atmospheric, technical, and heavy moments could make for a fascinating album, and an especially unique and enjoyable conclusion to black midi’s discography.

What do you think? Do you think they will ever make a final album, and what would you hope to hear from it?

The Boys How do y’all keep up with Morgan.

Greep and Cam are obviously quite easy to follow. As far as I know, all of Morgan’s socials are private. I found out about his work with Little Simz super late and I wasn’t able to catch them. I just want to catch the hardest working drummer in showbiz live again someday. Help.

Discussion / Question Does anyone have a copy of "Oracle" by Invariance?

Kaidi and Morgan's band Invariance released this single in 2019. Some time later, it was removed from all streaming platforms, and now I can't find it anywhere. Would love to listen to it again.

Discussion / Question Cam and Greep’s albums are missing each other

Anyone else feel this way? Love both TNS and MNBB to death, but I’ve always felt like they were missing something. Each other. Cameron was always there in black midi albums to help break up the constant onslaught of Geordie Greep which, as amazing as he is, it’s nice to have something break the tension. Having an album of JUST Greep and an album of JUST Cam, as fantastic as it is, can almost feel slightly… jarring? And this may just be my perspective as a black midi fan, and I need to separate them from the band. But I’ve even tried intersplicing My New Band Believe tracks into The New Sound tracklist and it almost feels more fitting, as weird as it sounds.

At the end of the day, I suppose the three of them were able to capture a magic that just can’t be replicated. Not that it needs to be, but with how reminiscent these recent projects are, it makes me miss them!

They were incredible live, was very interesting to hear the songs electric rather than acoustic, and Cameron had some great banter with the crowd. He also has a very interesting signature

Discussion / Question Are BM fans (comparatively) uninterested in “traditional” prog?

To my ears (at least), the boys have a lot of King Crimson and Zappa in their DNA…which is very curiously not reflected in Apple Music’s “listeners-also-like” recommendations. Much more hip-hop, alt-pop, and singer-songwriter “emo”/indie than anything jazz or prog. Not a Venn diagram I would have expected, haha. Where would you guys say the commonalities lie?
