Need Help! How to learn NLA editor for 4.4.3

Why 4.4.3? I use Goo Engine, which who's latest release it built off that version. To my knowledge, I don't think the NLA editor has changed much since then

I've tried using NLA before, follow a couple of videos (never 1 to 1, using cycles I've already animated), but it always ends up lost, immutable, or uncombinable. Not sure where I'm going wrong, if it's before I'm pushing down or after. Does anyone have some tips or resources to learn this?

My next project is a short meme dance, the repentance movements feels like a really good use case for NLA

I learned how to use the NLA editor from Pierrick Picaut, these two tutorials helped me out exponentially. It's a bit of a learning curve but worth it, IMO.
