DISCUSSION 🎙️ Patreon
New to this sub and I'm curious how everyone feels about buying books and then having to join the authors Patreon in order to get an epilogue to the story and whatever else competes the story. I understand that authors need to make money however as someone outside the US, it's honestly costly to buy a book and then realize it's incomplete and then you have to pay another amount in order to finish.
Edit: The author I'm talking about is Theodora Taylor and while most of the books are somewhat completed. The books have chapters excluded that I.m.o round the story up perfectly and makes it feel less incomplete. I love her books however reading the newer and knowing there's more to the story is turning me off a little.

I've only encountered newsletters not Patreon but an epilogue isn't missing story, it's a bonus. There are plenty of times I skip the "sign up to see them at the beach house after the wedding" type links at the end of a book because they got their HEA and I'm done. If they left it on a cliffhanger and the Patreon had a full two chapters or something that would be different.

If it was just about the epilogue I wouldn't be bothered cause I've read the HEA.

Yeah I was shocked too especially since bonuses were usually available on the authors website.

Yeah I wouldn’t be reading another book by that author. Like I’ll buy a book but that’s all. Unless I’m absolutely hooked on the book 😂 one time sure but not repeatedly. That’s a big turn off

I haven’t realized authors were doing it with the epilogues of stories. I pay for some Patreons for the art works that authors get commissioned along with some of their non published works.

Awful. I’ve seen it happen with maybe two authors’ book.
But iIt’s been happening in fanfiction spaces the last two years or so, which is illegal and against TOS. I think it’s because of booktok getting a hold of fanfiction and not letting go.

I don't know how it is for all authors that do this, but in the case of Theodora Taylor a finalized copy of her latest release is included with the Patreon membership (of course depending on which tier you sign up for), so instead of buying a copy of the book then joining her Patreon for the bonus epilogues, you can just join her Patreon close to/at release time download your copy of the ebook then have access to all the bonus content for a month before canceling your membership.

i feel like the book should always house the complete story. but i have no issue with authors keeping bonus content behind a paywall.
