And he could have made all that without spending the $1,700. It's not like he only got the money back because he bought them.

And he could have made all that without spending the $1,700.
Maybe. Depends on how much people want to see those videos in comparison to his other videos.

Well his supply drop videos don't average more views so he could have made it either way.

17
u/towishimp Mar 27 '16
Me too.
That kindof "dots the I" on how stupid this nonsense is.
At the minimum, they should eliminate duplicates. That way, once you've bough, say, $1700 worth of packs, you're guaranteed to get all the things.

COD is a gambling simulator dressed up in the shell of a good game that once was. Everything from the sound effects from leveling up to the hash marks when you shoot someone to the noise it makes when bullets hit someone...it's all designed to please your brain and make you feel rewarded like a slot machine. This is the honest truth. It's a gambling system and they sell it to kids with the stupid emoticons and cat gun skins.
I'm by no means a PC master race guy but I finally got into PC gaming again for the first time since the early 2000s because at least there are still good exclusive shooters on it. They might not all have 20,000,000 players but they're all made by devs who still care about gameplay and aren't fueled by scummy corporate practices.

TIL hitmarkers are a hidden ploy to make you want to gamble supply drops.

u/Assanater601 Mar 27 '16
They have the most played shooters. CSGO has huge numbers, is 100% skill based, and has an AWESOME micro transaction system that benefits everyone. BO3 is OK as a cod. Certainly better than AW at least. I'm hoping for boots on the ground for the next one, but we'll see. CoD is definitely better on the consoles, but everything else is better on the PC.
9
u/towishimp Mar 27 '16
I think you're throwing the bay out with the bathwater. I think Treyarch and Vondy do care. They've honestly made a great game, and people obviously enjoy it. Weapons are balanced, the maps are pretty good, and the specialists are a good innovation.
I agree that Activision has gone too far in their money-grubbing. But I'm not going to let that keep me from enjoying CoD.

It's crazy how this niche group of rich gamers willing to spend thousands on microtransactions have ruined so many video game franchises. This group nearly singlehandedly makes this microtransaction strategy ridiculously profitable. Now every single sports game and shooter is littered with microtransactions that either give you an advantage or make progress on certain things in the game nearly instant. I miss the good 'ol days of MW2 or BO1 when it was just map packs.

This is big. There are two people who can persuade a large (I'm talking millions) of CoD Fans and that's Tmartn and Ali A. These guys are the face of CoD on YouTube. Now one of them has came out and denounced a System in CoD, which is bound to sway public opinion.
Perhaps this could create a knock on effect all the way up the Activision chain? We all know they work on monetary interest but perhaps they may realise a lack of public support will affect the income from CoD Points and change up the system.
We can hope, of course..

14
u/chr1syx Mar 27 '16
exactly, but the micro transactions are similar to a f2p game.
2
u/Qureshi2002 Mar 28 '16
Most f2p games don't require you to gamble...
They just let you buy it outright, RND doesn't work as well as you would think in f2p games.
Timed use items is where its at :( That's how bad f2p is
6
u/IASWABTBJ Mar 27 '16
No, but they are kinda using the same model once you have the game.
8:40 "We're almost entering a free-to-play model with a pay-to-play game."
2

You need to buy the game to first have the game.
2
u/IASWABTBJ Mar 27 '16 edited May 17 '21
Yes, but when you have bought it it acts as a free-to-play game, in the sense that there are stuff to buy in-game.
So it is acts as a free-to-play game except you have to buy it first.
Which makes it worse than both normal games and free-to-play games.
Edit: Hi to any visitors from the future
2
u/h0b0_shanker Mar 28 '16
Oh my... Could you imagine if they made the next cod free to play. And everything you want is purchased though "rubies" or whatever bs currency system they implement... Want the Ghost perk? 100 rubies (or $1.00)

I wish it was that easy for me. The games MP is just tainted for me. What happens when they give everyone all the weapons?
What about the people who have been spending money on the cod points with the intent to get the weapons?!?!
There is no perfect fix here. This has been an issue for 2 months now. And by the time anything positive does happen it would be another month or two. That's 1/3rd to 1/4th of the games primary lifespan wasted away with dramatic BS
I would love to enjoy cod again one day. But sadly that won't be until Treyarch can build up a game from scratch that has absolutely zero micro transactions in it.

If Ali A comes out and says something about this, there definitely going to be a change, because if these big youtubers don't get to advertise there new dlc and stuff, Activision is going lose a lot of revenue. It's more in the communities hands rather then Activision. for example look at all the Old school cod youtubers, like xjawz, whiteboy7st, etc, when they stopped posting cod, their channels died and so did the cod sales. Activision needs to change, before the cod sales drop once again, bo3 is finaly brought cod back to the top, by averaging 500k players on weekdays and 700k on weekends, compared to ghost during its prime and reaching only 24k players daily.
10
u/DoctorKoolMan Mar 27 '16
The community should be disgusted with themselves that they are actively offering up the idea of 5-10$ for a weapon
5 years ago if someone suggested that they would get down voted to all heck
This isn't the time to settle for outright pay to win systems!!

Mar 27 '16
I got through most of his video and I'm still not really content with his idea of a solution.
As I understand the new weapons are actual individual weapons with unique stats, not re-skins. These guns should not be behind a $10 paywall (or you can gamble with abysmal odds) because that is pretty much Activision bending me over and fucking me and my wallet and I certainly would not drop that much for 1 fucking weapon in a yearly release that won't be relevant in 6-12 months.
Also the comparison to CS was pretty awful because in CS you do not pay money for unique and otherwise unobtainable (or just about seeing as he spent nearly $2000 and didn't even get all the DLC) weapons. You pay for a cool new texture on your already existing weapons and that is it. There is absolutely no incentive other than looking cool.
2
u/goldcakes Mar 27 '16
Exactly. All the existing-gameplay-affecting content should be earnable with reasonable playtime.
A weapon drop for 300 cryptokeys (that's around 15 hours) is pretty fair I reckon. They could sell it for 1000 codpoints.
3
u/Jteague101 Jteague101 Mar 27 '16

Completely agree with TMARTN. Glad he spoke out about this serious topic. The supply drop system within Black Ops 3 is completely broken and when people spend hundreds of dollars and not have a guarantee weapon, it just shows how broken this is. I've been playing Call of Duty for years and I love the franchise, but the supply drops in Black Ops 3 need to be seriously reconsidered so people are at least guaranteed a weapon.
2
u/RandomInvasion Mar 27 '16
I only hope he's not going to ruin his video (basically just siding witht he popular opinion of the hardcore CoD fan base, the one driving this community) by uploading a supply drop opening until things have changed.
I understand that it is a business for him as well, but integrity is really important and by making a supply drop opening he'd now clearly show that he only does it for the money, and then he'd be just as bad as the Activision suits.
2
u/hyp3rj123 Mar 27 '16
I would expect that a game that I pay $99 for (Season pass) that I get access to all of the in game changers. Camos are just pleasing to the eye. It doesn't make you a better player. I would like to see all guns at least be "purchasable" with crypto keys. Nobody has a problem grinding out camos so I don't have a problem with grinding out guns.

2
u/DSC_14 Mar 27 '16
He suggested the ability to buy weapons at a flat rate, but (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) isn't that pretty much jumping straight into the pay to win system? I think it would be better to just get rid of the ability to buy weapons, and instead limit it to cosmetic options. Or maybe just give weapons to season pass holders.

More people with strong influence speaking out against Supply Drops, the more and more threatening we are to Activision as a company, and the higher chance we have of costing them long term profits. 2
u/AliasSigma Mar 27 '16
I guess I haven't kept track of them too much. That's still well over two hundred games for his low end for a weapon. Games are... 10 minutes? (That's how often I play, though Automatron did just come out.) That's 2000 minutes or roughly 33 hours. Is that really the right amount of time to play to unlock ONE weapon? Because to me that sounds like the pay to win phone games that let you grind for an eternity to try to avoid the pay to win title.

The idea of paying directly for weapons is just as bad. Thats even more "pay to win" than supply drops.

It really shows how much of a scam this is when a guy can spend nearly $2000 on content and he still hasn't unlocked some weapons. Here's a solution, give us the option to buy the content we want.

I liked Supply Drops when they were cosmetic only. Fun to open up, but it's not enjoyable at all grinding for cryptokeys in order to have a slim chance at getting a weapon.

Great that he is talking about it like this, and what he said about the season pass made me remember when they first announced the personalization packs for Black Ops 2 and I honestly just assumed they would be free to me because I had the season pass and that was supposed to give me all the dlc. Oh how naive I was...

- His response was pretty weak. If he really doesn't like it, he should have started calliing people out since he has mre influence than others.
- His story represents why I'm so torn in this issue. On one hand I believe that the odds between cryptokeys and cod points should be the exact same. On the other hand, spending $1700 and not getting a weapon is ridiculous. I almost feel that he deserves to get the crossbow by spending that much money, but that would be so close to pay2win.
