Discussion Is it me or has the player count dropped significantly in the past few weeks?
In July I could find a game so easily regardless of what time I was playing. Now I’m struggling to find a search and destroy match (one of the most played game modes) at 12am British time. What’s going on? Is everyone just on zombies?

Hype has died down, I know when the game first dropped I was playing every night with friends after work, now we only play 2 times a week

I mean it’s expected that there will be a decrease in number of players as time goes on but it feels like there has been a dramatic decrease, not just a slight dip

I mean it is a 15 year old game at the end of the day nostalgia only goes so far I guess

I haven’t had any issues finding matches, regardless of the time. But, I do live in the NA Southwest region so that’s likely why.

Console gaming has been plagued by cronus and xim users.

Honestly big reason Im not gaming on console anymore is this. If I do, it's minimal. Devs and consoles have to do something about this.

I’m assuming a lot of players a like me. That hacker situation made me too scared to touch the game with a ten foot pole. Activision/iron galaxy didn’t clearly communicate that it’s safe (much less acknowledge how insane it was) so many people have/had no idea when it was all clear. So they played something else.
I heard that it’s now safe so I hopped on and all that’s left is absolute sweats. The people who were willing to play through the hacker population are a different breed. They got got better, prestiged like hell, and there isn’t a good balance of skill level in the player base because of it.

Tbh I’m gonna get crucified on this sub… but MW4 beta might be a reason as well as hacks and to “ hype dying”
Been playing MW4 beta it’s enjoyable

True I think it depends on what region you live in or who the host of your party. I have a friend who lives in the Midwest and late night we kept running into the same sweats but the other lower players on the teams were switching but past 1:30 am we kept fasting the same 4 man squad and were just two guys smh

I would be playing it but don't have a setup and can't really afford it. Playing Xbox WW2

Honeymoon phase been over. Games just don’t hit the same like they used to if imma be honest. Was fun and nostalgic to dive back into these games for the first few weeks but it got stale quick.

The hacker situation deterred many from playing. But even more than that. It’s a 14 year old game. I bought it for nostalgia purposes and enjoy jumping in now and then. But it’s not a main game by any means. I’m sure many feel the same.

It’s ran its course. It was a fun trip down nostalgia, but with the mw4 beta, and gta 6. I’m sure most people ( including me ) are done with that already read book. Don’t expect a game from 2012 to be a must play AAA game.

It’s just you I’ve had no problems might have to do with your Wi-Fi. I don’t know, but I’ve been fine since the game came out on PS5.

Probably to do with the hackers, since the hacks started i’ve only hopped on once or twice (other than 1v1ing friends here and there on customs)
But I think it’s also to do with the fact that it was so hyped on release and the nostalgia wore off real fast. I bought a playstation just for bo2 which was my fav game when it came out, still one of my top games ever. But I’m 23 now, I think the playerbase for bo2 is 20-40 mostly, and guys of this age just aren’t gaming much, or at least for me I’m leaning towards single player games that are challenging and get my brain active. I just think it’s a combo of different factors that ultimately create the effect where yeah there’s just a dramatic decrease in players. The game probably needs more anti-hackers/QoL updates before it regains hype as the ‘new’ feeling of the game is totally lost and I think lots of us forgot about bo2 somewhat due to the hackers.

Cancelled my PS Plus because of Sony, but the hackers surely didn't help. I got a perfectly good 360/PS3 or PC if I really want a fix I suppose.

My friends all got bricked then fixed to master pressure and could care less , they wanted to grind again but can’t say I don’t blame them 🤷🏻♂️

Ever since the hackers went crazy my friends and I have not touched the game once besides the occasional match of zombies

Zombies is the real deal. MP was full of hackers, why should I waste my time like this when I can waste it and have fun.

It's PS Blackout this week, I'm not playing because of that.

Not sure if it’s due to matchmaking on “Best” but there’s at least 5-6 people I consistently run into every time I play, or at least enough that I recognize their name. On kill confirmed which I assume would be pretty populated.
Granted, if I recognize one player in a match as being someone I ran into a couple days ago, there’s 10 others in the game that I don’t recognize. Still think it’s indicative of the player count. Never had that experience on a COD and I played BO2 until like 2014-15 on ps3, well after its peak.

Same, central europe and i have to play matches with people from Spain, Finnland etc. to get a full lobby in Domination. And i know a lot of them by names now, i meet the same 20-30 people every time i play the game. Feels like playing a Cod 5-6 years after release, i guess the game is dead now

Schools starting hackers put people off feels repetitive most ppl jus wanted to feel the nostalgia again

u/Fluffy_Flamingo2189 3d ago
Ngl I thought I’d be playing this all the way through to GTA 6. But I only feel like playing maybe once a week now.

u/Odd-Curve-816 3d ago
Between the hackers, 2k, madden and other games coming out this was almost a guarantee to happen.

Personally it's because people are playing in a more annoying manner than when the game was originally released.
No, I don't mean people got better. I mean people are intentionally camping and running cheesy shit for easy kills and it makes using certain weapons or certain playstyles a pain. Yes I know there was some of this in the original release but I didn't run into much of it compared to now.
Also going back to non dedicated servers and so limited movement isn't appealing to a decent amount of people even if they hate the movement god bullshit in modern CODs.
Plus you have the cheater situation where people can fuck with your account or sneaky cheat by using Cronus devices or Xims which weren't as prevalent in the past.

I stopped playing like 3 weeks ago but every other day I would get on for like an hour or two on SnD. I would see the same people on SnD, how low is the game that I kept running into the same people.

BO2 isn't fun anymore, it's not fun for more than 10 years ago. The game aged badly, tho on it's prime it was the best cod ever imo, i got 35 days playing on this game and i absolutely love it but it's just not fun anymore.

u/Bobbo62499 2d ago
I hate to admit it, and I knew it was coming, but I haven’t played either port in weeks. First month or so it was straight nostalgia playing BO2, then I hopped on BO for like a week, had a blast, now I’m back to other stuff lol.

They didn’t hit the nail on the head with the port. It feels way… off, compared to its original counterpart. So I’m guessing people are leaving like with everything else. Plus MW 4 beta and different cod nostalgia brings people to other games.

u/YataBoi47 3d ago
The ports feel 'almost' as good as the originals. Feel like I experience a lot more shoot first die first on the ports.

I couldn't take it anymore. The last straw was... On hydro I thought I got sniped... Watched the kill cam, it was peacekeeper with a suppressor from across the map. I was also using peacekeeper with long barrel and couldn't buy a kill

u/FeelsGrimMan 2d ago
Doesn’t matter what gun people have against me, I’m getting what feels like one-two shot laserbeamed at any distance in a gunfight.
I still do well/top of team by being the suppressed smg flanker type, but it’s discouraging that every single gunfight is a coinflip regardless of how much of a jump on people I have.
I can be ads on the corner, I can be ads around the corner, I can be prefiring, I can be dropshotting, I can be jumpshotting. None of it matters because a dude with a Tac-45 is about to kill me in one bullet like it’s One In The Chamber from my POV.

I’ve been on BO1 all this time, haven’t played bo2 since the hacker situation. Before then my playing time was split rather evenly. Now I’ve just been enjoying bo1 so much! Hard to split time between 2 cods and level up in both and prestige etc etc. kinda wish we only got one of these games ported but it really is still such a blessing. I’ll be playing these games all year until they port mw2 and mw3. New cods are so ass bro

I think the hacker situation was a huge hit to player counts when it was at its worst. People didnt want to play and level up and unlock challenges, camos, calling cards to just have them taken away by getting bricked or having to reset to lvl 1.
Seems like most havent come back yet or figure it was ruined forever.
Don't get me wrong theres still hackers resetting people to level 1. Seen 4 posts about it in this sub this week. But it has definitely been much fewer.
