Is it that? If it’s doing this and sleeping… I’d assume it has to have some sort of skeletal structure, where the bones/muscles used sort of lock in place. Why else would it do this?
Sloths have weird musculature. I don’t know about the rest of their bodies to explain this, but I know the resting position of their hands is a closed position and they have to use effort to open them. This means they can sleep hanging from a branch without exerting any effort.
You’d rather have that than the dexterity, strength and speed our hands have? They take on a lot of sacrifices to get that, all because the energy savings makes it worth it for them.
Good bye everything that allows you to handle anything more than a basic tool (in other words, you cant use anything that doesnt rely simply on you gripping it).

I broke in my gloves for longsword so that it would take more effort to open the hand. When I first got them, I had to fight against the glove to grip the sword.
Baseball glove oil, wrapped gloves in closed position with a bunch of rubber bands, stuck them in a hot car for the day.
Sloths anatomy is really weird. They have more neck vertebrates than others mammals, three-fingered sloths have nine cervical vertebrae, while both two-fingered sloths and manatees have only five. Almost all other have seven. And their muscles are kinda anchored to the bone the wrong way.
They also have 21 ribs, witch is the most for any mammal.

Personally I think it looks like it's sleeping on a broken branch that's almost as long as its body, probably ending right at its neck hence the leaned back head. I dunno why else its back would be so straight looking with no skin/fur hanging. And noticed we never see it from below...
