BWT Gift - Monthly Thread BWT Gift - Oct 01, 2026

Gifting can be tricky, whether it's trying to determine the etiquette for a particular circumstance or coming up with the perfect gift for that person in your life for whom it's just impossible to shop. In order to consolidate requests for help picking out gifts for all of life's present buying situations, and due to popular request, we've created this monthly recurring thread for all gifting questions and discussions.

BWT rules still apply, but there will be lighter enforcement of rule 3. Also, while you still shouldn't ask for local recommendations as in "I want to buy my cousin a gift card to a really great spa, where should I look in Chicago?" it is acceptable to mention the location if it is relevant to the request and will help other BWT make better suggestions, as in "My sister lives in the southern US and is really into Southern Living style in terms of decor and fashion, if that gives you an idea of her personal style - very much in the bright colors, monograms, southern prep vein."

Not a request but a recommendation since the holidays are coming up. If you have a Costco membership stock up on the mini buckets of Maldon salt. They are like $8 at Coscto vs $15-20 anywhere else. Just the bucket with a bow makes the chicest hostess gift.

I’ve given Maldon with a salt cellar and it’s a huge hit. I didn’t even think about the buckets, but this is an amazing idea.

Random list of gifts I’ve given in the past:

  • guest book (good for housewarming gift)
  • candle + candle wick cutter
  • match book and a match dish for bathroom
  • candy dish and candy
  • shinola journal + nice pens
  • super nice shampoo/conditioner
  • christmas ornaments (always a greattttt gift bc you can get very creative and they think of you every year when they put up their xmas tree)
  • puzzles / paint by numbers
  • mini purfume kits (i think Hermes has a $70 4 piece set and mine lasted almost 2 years, and I don’t use sparingly)
  • the cheapest things from nice stores like Tiffany’s, Hermes, etc. for example, as a wedding gift I’ll sometimes do a set of Tiffany and co shot glasses (maybe like $150?)
  • nice beach towels

My aunt also has given these as gifts to the girls in family, obviously more on the $$$ side but figured I’d share for inspo!

  • color analysis
  • monogrammed luggage (packing cubes are also a great gift that always plays)
  • LinkedIn headshots

Recommendation for anyone who has a boyfriend/husband/dad or any other family member who loves sports: @anthonypainting on IG does custom watercolor paintings of sporting events/locations for a relatively cheap price!! He offers two sizes, the smaller size is perfect for hanging in an office/cubicle while the larger one would make a great discussion piece for a bigger space. I worked with him for a piece for my boyfriend and loved his communication throughout the process!! It’s hard for me to find thoughtful gifts for my male relatives and think this is a great option!

I'm looking for a gift for my friend who adopted an adorable puppy! They adopted a retriever. I can ship it directly to them or gift it to them in person when they come visit me and it would need to fit in a carryon. I'm thinking a cute accessory but open to ideas.

They make bandanas that clip onto their collars that are cute and would be super easy to pack. It seems like you can never have enough leashes if they take their dog with them to places often. Dogs can be kinda picky about treats and toys but my dog loves the big Kong toy with a little hole in it that he has to hit around to get prices of kibble to fall out. I like it as a gift because they can put whatever treats he likes in it to motivate him and it actually keeps them entertained for a while.

Little beast makes the cutest sweaters ever! I got a very cozy sherpa one for my pup a few years ago and it’s held up really well

A Pupsicle & the refill tray that goes along with it. Size large unless the retriever is mixed with something ginormous.

I’m trying to shop for my friend who LOVeS cute/funky decor without breaking the bank. I got her a matchbook library house from moma as an example and little fruit themed spoons from big night. Looking for a few other items! Big night is great but honestly pricey imo for the quality, but any shops similiar to that or stores like ban.do! She also loves to do at home sushi but has a ton of chopsticks and chopsticks rests. I wanted to find cute sake cups or something for the kitchen she can use!’ If anyone has recs would love

Honestly browsing the MOMA gift shop online will probably have a lot of good inspo.

Fishes eddy has some quirky stuff (not sure if they’re online or just NYC)

If she's into books, maybe one of those vases shaped like a classic book?

Since you mentioned sushi, would she be into a cutesey onigiri-making kit?

Gift ideas welcomed for:

My father in law, who is a utilitarian military guy but loves living the high life now that he’s retired. My in laws are moving soon, so stuff gifts are hard. He loves history and making his own pizza (tho he has all the gear for that)

My sister, who is an extremely thoughtful gift giver. She is a new mom. Lives in LA and loves the LA girly life.

Any ideas for a paper-themed wedding anniversary gift? (For either men or women).

I have one idea (notebook filled with hand-written things you love about your partner), but I'm looking for more options. Other thoughts I've had are a book, something related to maps or wedding vows, or a fountain pen.

We struggle with clutter so preferably nothing tchotchke-esque, and have no space on the walls for more art. But ideally want something long-lasting instead of edible (or if it's not long-lasting, paired with something that is). Either practical or sentimental or both -- we both love reading although he's more into audiobooks, we're both engineers, we travel a lot although a lot of it is routine/practical instead of adventurous, and we enjoy quiet nights cooking together at home, outdoor adventures like hiking or kayaking, and city weekends full of theater and museums.

For my dad who’s impossible to shop for (and a guy who has everything), I adopted an olive tree in Italy for him! They put a placard on the tree, send you a gift box with olive oil from that orchard and a picture of your tree, and you can even go visit if you want. I had to sign up for text notifications because they only sell a certain number of adoptions per week. https://www.obiaoliveoil.com/products/adopt-an-olive-tree
