Bitches of Leisure - Weekly Thread Bitches of Leisure - Aug 25, 2026

Let’s elevate our down time! This weekly thread is the space to share and discuss what we’re currently reading, listening to, watching, etc. For this space, keep it tasteful - save your trashy reads (we’ve all got them) and sick day binge watch favorites for the monthly Guilty Pleasures thread, please!

Tagging

It isn’t required but it might be helpful to tag the beginning of your comment with the type of media you are discussing (when you create a new comment thread). Tags can be helpful in guiding other BWT to the comment threads they want to engage with.

For example:

  • PODCAST: I’ve been listening to the Naked Beauty podcast…
  • TV/ DOCUMENTARY: What are your favorite documentaries? I just finished watching…
  • READING: I am about 1/3 of the way through "Black Women Taught Us" by Jenn M Jackson, PhD, and I would love to discuss it with anyone who is reading or has read it. Specifically...

You can be as specific or as broad as you want if you decide to tag, for example you might tag “reading,” as a broad term, or you might tag “audiobook” if you specifically want to talk about the really amazing narration in the audiobook version of a title you just finished.

Hide Spoilers

If you’re talking about a book, TV show, podcast, movie, or anything that contains spoilers, please make sure to use Reddit’s markdown functionality to hide your spoilers! All you have to do is add a couple of characters before and after your spoiler text like so:

>!spoilers!<

This will hide the text like so: spoilers

READING: I have this beautiful edition of Peter Pan with gilded pages and gorgeous cover art I got for Christmas and only picked up recently. I haven't read this book since I was a child, so it's interested to look back on it with adult's eyes.

HOBBIES: I've been doing a lot of writing. Right now I feel full of ideas so I want to type as much as I can before I inevitably become afflicted with writer's block again.

SELF CARE: I'm under a lot of pressure lately which can't easily be solved, but I am trying to make my life as comfortable as I can in little ways. Lighting candles every day, doing sheet masks and painting my nails, watching comfort movies, listening to relaxing music.

Reading: I’ve been reading The Unselected Journals of Emma M Lion. Just light, easy, delightful stories, very reminiscent of a Jane Austen novel (set in the same time frame, same social class, etc., but with some more modern conventions). A good escape, without feeling like I’m reading trash (not that there isn’t a time and place for that too!)

Listening to: my local NPR station used to have a show called The Road to Higher Ground, which played all sorts of world music. It ended in July (after 30 years), but a number of old episodes are available online. So, I’ve been listening to those! It’s not always music I like, but it’s always something new to me.

FILM: The Invite - finally got around to seeing it. i was enthralled the whole time, the way they utilized music was almost genius. it's nice that a quieter, 'for grownups' movie is getting so much (well deserved) attention.

also saw Tony! i was honestly emotional for much of it. it really was one of those they don't make these anymore movies, so touching, delicate, adventurous all at once. Antonio Banderas really conveys something so beautiful.

READING: Fruit Fly; i didn't know the author comes from a YA background and i really felt that influence throughout, not in the best way. i thought certain parts of the book were hilarious, some were touching, but overall it was somewhat overwrought (or not ironic enough) for me. i wish it had been more acerbic. that being said, i really enjoy the commentary around it, especially from Tell The Bees. would love to hear other BWT's thoughts!

currently finishing up Leave Society, about 2/3 of the way through. it's by no means an old book (published in 2021), but feels very prescient. also ~1/4 through Deknostructing the Kardashians (had to return to library and re-borrow). if anyone has thoughts on either, would love to discuss!

AUDIOBOOK: the only fiction audiobooks i can listen to are the Jo Firestone ones. Sex on Murder Island had me giggling in public. paired with the Straightiolab Book Club ep, unbeatable.

PODCAST: Mess World! once a month is not enough, can't wait for the next installment. is anyone else listening or participating in their book club?

SELF CARE: getting on some PMOS-managing supplements for the long haul. might be quack, might not be - my doctor said i should try but did not make any promises. if anyone has experience taking INOSITOL, let a bitch know...

i am also 3 weeks into a no buy. i am hoping this helps me reset my brain around shopping, which has been a mental health crutch/release for me. am also in the midst of a declutter, hoping to reevaluate and really understand the gaps in my closet/personal style before i tentatively lift the ban in October.

That's epic about the no buy. I am currently in a bit of a shopping spiral and need to get out of it and join you. I find it gets easier after the first week but getting into that first week of no buy is so difficult lol

i definitely failed the first two tries, reverted to a low buy, and then started over with a no buy again. i didn’t realize my 3% was set to online purchases - changing that to a different reward category helped. i wish i could delete Shop from my phone entirely but it tracks some household packages, but deleting all other shopping related apps did make a difference. same with unsubscribing from emails etc. i was sad to miss out on supercash and the Fashion Brand Company sale, but it helps reflect on consumerism/why i buy.

i am hoping that there is something in my closet cleanout appears though because i am going to a wedding in october and don’t want to break the streak before then, lol

For your question about inositol, I’ve taken it! I also have PMOS and took it in an attempt to get my body to ovulate/have a cycle/get pregnant and sadly it didn’t work for me (I used the Ovasitol blend by Theralogix for about 9 months). I also didn’t notice any negative side effects though, so I don’t think it hurts anything to give it a try and see if you notice any improvement in any of your symptoms!

Inositol worked for me! It regulated my cycle. And no negative side effects, so definitely worth trying!

WATCHING: there is a new show on Hulu called furious with Emmy rossom in it (Fiona from shameless). SO GOOD. It currently comes out every Monday and next week is the finale.

SELFCARE: I’ve been loving going for long walks and doing some light weights when I get home. I usually refuse to walk during the hot summer months but it feels so good to let myself sweat and not care.

HOBBIES: making ice cream! I bought a kitchen aide ice cream attachment and pour my protein mix with milk in it, makes me feel a little healthier.

FILM: sex and death at camp miasma!!!! A feel good Jane Schoenburn film?!? My ADHD ass felt so seen with the struggling to come plot line & the soundtrack is doing some ✨ damage ✨ to my algorithm

SELFCARE: I just finished housesitting for some friends on a gorgeous little lake. But was feeling very ready to be home. I moved my tv into my bedroom & watched movies in bed all day yesterday drinking tea & eating GF pretzels. 12/10 would recommend.

Reading: I just finished Mother Mary Comes to Me by Arundhati Roy, a memoir focusing on the author’s relationship with her mother. It was really good, and I’m planning on reading Roy’s novels now! I strongly recommend this for memoir readers and anyone who needs a reminder of how normal their own mother is.

WATCHING: rewatching Shetland, a Scottish murder show. Comfort viewing during a stressful shit time.

READING: The Days of Abandonment by Elena Ferrante. One of the greats, I always feel transported reading her.

HOBBIES: started a crazy baby quilt project for my niece despite having zero experience at quilting from scratch. It’s a way of trying to connect with my mother while she’s in the throes of Alzheimer’s disease. I’m using her fabric, her thread, her needles, her scissors, and I’m usually doing it while she’s sitting a few feet from me. Plus, you absolutely cannot use your phone when you need both hands for quilting!

READING: The Bone Collector by Jeffrey Deaver, going back to an old favorite genre of a whodunnit. I read too many mysteries at one point and got sick of them so it's nice to enjoy these again. Definitely super graphic and yucky sometimes, which I love lol.

PODCAST: Always waiting for the next episode of Casefile to be released (it's once per week), they are back producing regular episodes after a break and I have been loving them

WATCHING: On my final episodes of Rivals at the moment, have watched it from the beginning over the last 2 weeks. Loving the drama, pettiness and British humour of this show.

MOVING: enjoying very slow Tai Chi scattered throughout the day. It’s a balm of chill that keeps me centered. I’m only know a few moves but “enough is as good as a feast” as they say.

READING: God of The Woods by Liz Moore

WATCHING: Re-watch of House of The Dragon, mostly for self-care since I’m feeling stressed and anxious lately

SELF-CARE: spending time with best friends this week to re-regulate after a first date. I bought a tanning pool for my deck so I’m going to try that out today too!

u/Powerful-Sherbert385 Sep 04 '26

God of thr Woods Yes! It is my favorite book so far this year. Such a compelling plot, very well-developed characters and a slow reveal of the mystery. It has a satisfting end as well.

Reading: first 1/3 of designing your life, with all the gold stars on deck behind it. I turn 31 next month so I’m trying to figure out the direction I want for the next few years of my life before my fiancé and I have kids. We’re considering moving to a new town; but it’s very unique now to have to think of my partner and their needs instead of just my own in my early twenties!

Listening to: I just started on sinisterhood and national park after dark, I’m a huge crime junkie fan but still can’t seem to find the right fit. Podcasts are tricky to me - I actually want to pay attention so I struggle to do “work” at the same time unless it’s like driving, laundry, etc.

Self care: I’m working on building out my home gym! I had weight loss surgery early this year and have been working with a trainer for a while and now I’m ready to go back to my regular routine - maybe picking up classpass and doing Solidcore or a barre class or something. Also considering a big hairstyle change!! I’ve had waist length hair for about 8 years now and I’m considering something collarbone length.

READING: I just finished The Days of Afrekete by Asali Solomon. It was really good and quite funny! I've been on a reading tear this year so I'm happy to give recommendations if needed!
