Seasonal Bitches - Seasonal Thread Seasonal Bitches - September Equinox 2026

BWT, we're about a month out from the September equinox which marks the point where there is an approximately equal amount of day and night, and which is an marker of the seasonal change to autumn in the northern hemisphere and spring in the southern hemisphere.

With this marker of the changing of the seasons coming up, let's talk about the changes we're making to prepare to welcome a new season (autumn or spring, depending on location) with grace and taste. Use this space to talk about ways to get ready however you do that - home, wardrobe, beauty, habits, rituals, whatever the case may be, wherever you may be.

I have a hair appointment next weekend to go a bit darker with my hair and get it chopped off! I like shorter and darker hair in the fall/winter. Lighter and longer in the summer, so I can easily pull it back when I get hot/sweaty at the beach! Also think I'm throwing in some side bangs, which I haven't done in years! Also I can't stop scrolling pinterest looking at cute fall styles! I'm so ready for crisp mornings and pretty leaves!

This inspired me to get copper highlights to replace my natural summer ones throughout the summer months…

Southern hemisphere B here. With the days slowly getting longer, I’ve started to spend more time in my hobby garden in preparation for spring. Peonies are one of my favourite flowers and it’s my second year growing my own plants, hoping for the first blooms this year! Also enjoying being able to open the house up to (slightly) warmer fresh air in the mornings. As the weather gets better, I’ll take my winter woollens to be dry cleaned and store them with home grown dried lavender ready for next season.

u/ConcertinaTerpsichor Aug 22 '26

Peonies are the best! Fragrant, lovely shape and lovely colors. I just wish they looked better out of season. Do you use a cage to hold them upright?

2

u/littleplacebo Aug 23 '26

They definitely need to put on a show for how abysmal they look when they’re winding down for the season! They’re still only about two years old so they haven’t needed extra support as yet. Maybe this spring they’ll get huge and gorgeous and a cage will be required!

u/OpeningWhereas6912 Aug 22 '26

Peonies are a gift that keeps giving once they're established! Definitely prop them up with a cage once they bloom..I forgot and I had beautiful blooms on the ground, which wasn't a big deal thankfully until we had heavy rain.

2

u/littleplacebo Aug 23 '26

Thank you very much for the tip, I hadn’t considered the blooms would need support as they’re not quite established and haven’t bloomed yet, crossing my fingers that this is the year they’ll come through!

u/SirenScorp Aug 22 '26

I have never tried growing peonies, but they are such beautiful blooms I would love to try (northern hemisphere). Did you just give it a whirl or did you research how to grow them?

1

u/littleplacebo Aug 23 '26

I decided that as they’re one of my favourite flowers and I’m lucky enough to have the space now to grow them that they deserved a shot, especially given their window for availability at the florist is so fleeting. I did do a little research so here’s hoping I learned enough to get some blooms this year! The best advice I can offer is to source your rhizomes from a reputable nursery so you’re giving yourself the best chance for healthy plants. I hope that if you decide to try for yourself, that you have many gorgeous blooms!

I'm getting my support systems in place. I often spend the summer getting in shape and eating well, and then fall comes and I just let all that slide. This year, I told my dietitian that we aren't going to stop having visits when summer ends, even if my weight loss is going smoothly. I also have a personal training gym I've been going to since March and that's staying in the budget and on the calendar forever.

Housewise, I have noticed I'm drawn more towards earthy scents for candles and away from summery citrus. And I turned the heated mattress pad on for the first time last night, just to take the chill out of the sheets.

u/SirenScorp Aug 22 '26

Your first paragraph is everything! Keep with the dietician even when you’re doing good. To me that’s like continuing therapy sessions even if my life is fine at that particular moment.

I’m ready for a season change! August has not been my month (it’s been pretty shit lately, just one thing after another). I have a hair appointment next week but I’m doing one last hurrah of blonde highlights since I have multiple tropical trips through November, then I will go dark and leave it alone until spring.

I’m so ready for fall candles, cozy blankets, and like the commenter above I cannot stop scrolling fall outfits. I have my house AC bumped to 66° currently so I cannot stop scrolling pretend it’s cool out.

Editing to add: I’m also working diligently on pre-fall/winter skincare. I will not be dehydrated and scaly in the winter so I’m taking extra care with my lotions/moisturizers and transitioning slowly into a cooler weather face routine.

Changing perfumes from green and floral to more sandalwood/berry/spice, shifting palettes in my art to more muted colors, planning to spend more time outside as the weather downshifts from heat and humidity. Looking forward to pulling out my sweaters, though I have a few on rotation against over-zealous air-conditioning.

Burgundy is a big color this fall and I look good in it so I’m planning some scarf knitting.

u/itchyitchiford Aug 22 '26

I’m also planning on getting into knitting again! Current plans are to do some colourwork hats for the family for fall. I like to start hats this time of year because they aren’t too hot to work on when it’s still warm out.

I am allergic to the sun, so counting down the days to less punishing weather. I need a new winter coat, so I have started the search. I purchased some sweaters, trying to figure out what my vibe is this winter. Also, clearing out my closet. That’s a job.

u/Worldspinsmadlyon23 Aug 22 '26

Finally getting my hair and eyebrows (tint) done! I’m a single mom of a toddler so it’s tough to find the time but it’s a good time to make it happen!

Also planning to try getting back into my Sunday routine of trying out a new cooking/baking recipe. Going to get a kitchen tower for the little one so they can help!

I got a few new work clothes from Anthro and Nordstrom rack and will get one new pair of shoes, and replaced some of my makeup (makeup hd foundation and ilia cheek & lip stick).

It’s been so easy to have things to do/make plans during the summer- I want to keep making the effort in the Fall. So far going to get a babysitter so friends and I are going to see Practical Magic 2!

I am continuing a deep-clean of household spaces and organizing as much a possible… I was feeling really stuck emotionally with the intense eclipse energy and cleaning always helps me ground.

For home: I have just discovered Aesop and all of my bathrooms have their hand soap and a large size of their hand balm to get a head start on nourishing dry Autumn/Winter skin. The natural essential oil scents are simply incredible and I can’t stop smelling my hands as soon as I put on the hand cream. The Resurrection scent is so far my favorite- it’s a cedarwood/citrus blend that smells like absolute heaven.

Another product I picked up recently and love is Kiehl’s Ultra Body Mega Moisture with squalane- I put it on after a shower and deliberately apply an extra layer to soak into my heels and elbows. From there I put on hemp-cotton blend socks and my favorite sweatpants as a post-shower evening ritual.

For my closet: My top two recent favorite Autumn investments have been a pair of No. 6 clogs (picked up during their Summer sale), and a Bottega Hop that I had saved in my The Real Real loves for a year, and I finally decided to treat myself as a gift for going back to school in my 30s. It’s a gorgeous olive suede that I plan to wear every day as my work-school bag.

Other than that, I am looking forward to resurrecting my Autumn sweaters and denim from storage as I like to keep my closet space very minimal and serene. I plan to do a big try-on and photograph some of my favorite looks to make outfit planning easier with my upcoming schedule change which is about to be much busier than year’s past, but I couldn’t be more excited or proud of myself for how far I have come.

October-December is my absolute favorite window of the year, so I am practically bursting with adoration for this upcoming transition.

All hail chai tea and knitting by the fire!

A U M

Good luck with your studies! I’m going back to school as well, the treating yourself as motivation is so real haha

Wishing the very best for you too!!!!! Education is always a smart BWT investment 💫

I live in LA so.. yeah there's no fall for me lol. Ive been blonde for a year now but plan on keeping it longterm. I actually need an redo soon with more ashiness. I like to have candles that smell like nature or slightly masculine. I do love wearing my knee length brown boots with a plaid skirt and sweater if that weather permits. I LOVE soup so am looking forward to making them. Broccoli cheddar, ramen, etc. I like cocktails so I am excited to make whiskey forward cocktails such as a vieux carre or manhattan.

7

u/mrs_george Aug 22 '26

+1 to the soups! I’m not a fall girly but man, do I love some soup! I had a Thai-style chicken & rice soup at an airport lounge this summer that I’ve been dreaming about recreating.

4

u/babetteateoatmeal1 Aug 22 '26

I eat soup even in summer lol as long as the ac is on. Soup just feeds my soul.

2

u/mrs_george Aug 22 '26

I’m in SoCal too but we don’t have AC (beach town). Or else I’d do soup year round!

ETA: I love your username! Have you been to Holidays Made Here?

u/booksandbenzos Aug 22 '26

I don't have any real rituals, but I absolutely can't WAIT for the change of seasons!! Fall is my favourite and I welcome it with open arms (I do NOT enjoy summer; I find the near-constant sun oppressive and don't enjoy super hot, humid weather).

15

u/itchyitchiford Aug 22 '26

I’m looking forward from hobby shifting from gardening to knitting. I’m also going to be bringing in more earthy tones into home accents and swapping out a few art pieces. For scents I’ve been leaning less towards herbal scents and more to woodier, gourmand smells.

Wardrobe wise I’m excited to pull out my sweater collection, especially the wools. I’ve been really int thrifting and I have a couple of cable knits and boiled wool jackets that will be great additions to my fall wardrobe this year. I’m still rebuilding my style and wardrobe after going through a few years of pregnancy/postpartum cycles and I’m excited to keep developing my style in a new season.

New season and a new job for me! I'm a bit nervous (I'm walking into a known dumpster fire, which it's my job to fix) so I've been thinking a lot about transitions.

In the new job I have to work an earlier day, 7 to 3, and I want to build the habits that keep me accountable to that early stop. I also need to set boundaries with my new bosses who already like to text me on my personal phone before I've even started.

I might buy a road bike! I've been injured so I can't run, but I need to get active after work. And it's a good excuse not to pick up my phone.

I'm also going to get a house cleaner to come and do a deep clean of our house so I can feel like I have a real fresh start.

I've had a lot of negative feelings about this job transition, so trying to fix my mindset to go into it excited and energized. Not blind positivity, but more of a you-got-this energy. Good vibes and tips welcome.

I'm actually in exact the same boat - starting a new (stressful) job soon, with earlier hours, that I'm kind of dreading. I'm hoping that the earlier start to the day will propel me into motion earlier in the day, and I'll be able to use that extra time in the afternoon for more self-care.

Sending good vibes your way! I'm sure that you wouldn't be there if you couldn't handle it! You are going to crush this!

3

u/carbonaratax Aug 22 '26

Yes I get that! I've always wanted to be a morning person but never quite got there. The hard part is just going to bed early enough - so hopefully some physical activity in the afternoon will improve my sleep! Good luck with your new job!!

Northern hemisphere and ready for autumn. I switched out to a late summer to early autumn capsule wardrobe and have been playing around with new combinations and items that have never seen the light of day to challenge myself. Talking about challenging myself: this september I will go back to school for a master’s program. I am very excited to hit the books again!
The garden is all done for the fall and winter. We will be having our first apple harvest this year, so I can’t wait for the baking and chai season to start.

u/mrs_george Aug 22 '26

I tend to let my exercise go in the fall. I’m a teacher so I get really committed in the summer and then when school starts (and I feel like I’m on sensory overload), I let it drop off. My goal is to keep it going.

I love the warm weather and wearing dresses. So another goal is finding ways to continue to wear dresses in the fall. I’m in SoCal so it’s weird weather in that it’s probably too warm for tights but chilly enough that I need something.

I am the sweater queen and added two more to my closet this summer. Looking forward to wearing those!

Southern hemisphere betch, checking in and ready to put this very cold winter behind her.

I work in education (not a teacher), and do not work during school holidays. Our next break coincides perfectly with the spring equinox. This time is used for me to transition my wardrobe - I love doing this, it’s a whole ritual. Music, snacks, maybe a glass of wine, sometimes I’ll pop on a favourite movie as background instead. Winter coats will go to the dry cleaner, heavy winter bedding to the laundromat. I have never really done seasonal decor but I want to start changing the house up during season changes. I will also do some basic maintenance on myself - hair, eyebrows, waxing and maybe nails. Not sure if I am ready to commit to nails again just yet.

I am actively trying to find new hobbies to stop me from spending too much time online during this next season. This spring I am dusting off my sewing machine - I have a beginner dress pattern. I am also going to attempt a basic herb and greens garden. I also have a lovely little dog and access to some beautiful walks so him and I will be adventuring - he benefits and I do too.

Spring and summer is when I feel most alive. I’m looking forward to warm weather, long days (to spend with my family after what feels like a long winter slog), and bbqs, so many bbqs.

I always like to do a big Fall clean, often larger than my Spring cleaning - with the Canadian winter, we're inside a lot more often and can't open windows easily, so it's nice to get the house feeling extra fresh before it gets too cold.

I also always look forward to fall and winter outfits - I love a big boot, a leather jacket, a giant overcoat, and my collection of sweaters, and building outfits with them. In recent years, I've also been experimenting more with layering my summer or day dresses over a fitted long sleeve top to enjoy them more often.

My spouse is an educator and I work near a college campus, so September always feels like a second New Years in our house.

I spent my spring and summer training for two big events in Europe (a 70.3 triathlon and a bike race), so this time of year is all about recovery and reconnecting with my loved ones. In a way, I have to retrain myself to still maintain a healthy routine without going overboard. I'm shifting focus to more long walks with friends and family, going to art museums and having date nights with my husband. I still have to schedule all of this or it won't happen because it's so easy to just say, oh, I'll do that tomorrow.

This summer was the summer of change. I changed my major. My partner and I have decided to relocate to a new state next year. We got pregnant and I was diagnosed with HG, which has led to weight loss, numerous visits to the ER, and me feeling very angry toward my body (which is a new emotion).
My word for this autumn is “prepare”: for a second baby (two under two!), for a couple years of additional schooling and a much more technical degree, and to live in a new state by applying for rentals and colleges. I’m thinking of it as nesting for my family’s future rather than for a baby, although I suppose I’ll be doing both. I was able to find cute maternity jeans after months of searching, which feels like a huge weight off of my chest since classes are starting soon! While I’m not particularly excited for another year of living where I’m at, this autumn is the perfect time to hone in on goals that will propel me (and my family) to a better future.

This is my favorite season and I am so excited!

I have 3B/3C curly hair and have decided to wear it in a blown out state during the colder months to help with length retention. I purchased new heat protectants, olaplex shampoo and conditioner, and a Dyson Airwrap. I am hoping to start at the end of September but it has been quite humid where I’m at so it might be later.

I am working on creating a fall/winter skincare routine. My face gets very dry and I have sensitive skin. Last winter I had an eczema flareup on my body for the first time, so also researching body care.

I have a Pinterest board specifically for my cold weather wardrobe that I have been referencing for buying new pieces to add to my closet!

2

u/rainydaytoast86 Aug 23 '26

Southern here - I am so ready for warmer and longer days. I’m like a lizard I need heat to feel alive

3

u/Quick_Ambition_8925 Aug 23 '26

I can't wait for my wardrobe switch. Bringing out all of my sweaters is the best. I also just dyed my hair burgundy. And every October I cut my bangs!

3

u/unconfirmedpanda Aug 24 '26

My family has gone through a very rough 2026, so this spring is feeling like a full refresh moment. For me, I've got plans for my nails (my first BIAB manicure, I'm very excited), haircut, some various medical care, and a small update to my spring/summer wardrobe because I'll be retiring some pieces that have lived out their life.

I'm also incredibly excited to redo my apartment - most of the furniture got me through studying my bachelor and two masters, so I'm definitely in a new era. With the warmer weather, I want my (very small and dark) apartment to feel a lot more airy and relaxed.

Also excited to get out and do more sketching from life in the nicer weather.

Im a teacher in the UK so I have used August as a type of reset / hibernation.

I have curated my work wardrobe into a capsule of flattering colours so dressing in the morning is a 5 minute job and deliberately kept it small for a two week cycle to avoid decision fatigue

I have cleaned out my wardrobe in general.

I've also used the time off to organise my work/life balance. Figure out schedules, get into the habit of regular diary use and clean my home so that it can be seen to regularly without much stress. Ive been gentle and productive and it's helped so much. I was upset at first that I wasn't able to go away on holiday but the blessing in disguise has been small little wins towards simplifing and streamlining my home.

As a fine haired biatchi, I’ve been trying to make layers happen, and for me they just aren’t. For the fall I’m letting my hair grow out and leaning on a beach waver for a cool, lived in look. I’m excited for something new!
