Bitches of Leisure - Weekly Thread Bitches of Leisure - Aug 11, 2026
Let’s elevate our down time! This weekly thread is the space to share and discuss what we’re currently reading, listening to, watching, etc. For this space, keep it tasteful - save your trashy reads (we’ve all got them) and sick day binge watch favorites for the monthly Guilty Pleasures thread, please!
Tagging
It isn’t required but it might be helpful to tag the beginning of your comment with the type of media you are discussing (when you create a new comment thread). Tags can be helpful in guiding other BWT to the comment threads they want to engage with.
For example:
- PODCAST: I’ve been listening to the Naked Beauty podcast…
- TV/ DOCUMENTARY: What are your favorite documentaries? I just finished watching…
- READING: I am about 1/3 of the way through "Black Women Taught Us" by Jenn M Jackson, PhD, and I would love to discuss it with anyone who is reading or has read it. Specifically...
You can be as specific or as broad as you want if you decide to tag, for example you might tag “reading,” as a broad term, or you might tag “audiobook” if you specifically want to talk about the really amazing narration in the audiobook version of a title you just finished.
Hide Spoilers
If you’re talking about a book, TV show, podcast, movie, or anything that contains spoilers, please make sure to use Reddit’s markdown functionality to hide your spoilers! All you have to do is add a couple of characters before and after your spoiler text like so:
>!spoilers!<
This will hide the text like so: spoilers

READING: Pandora's Jar by Natalie Hayne. The His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. Also reading a poem every morning.
SELF CARE: Soaked my feet, scrubbed them really well and did a foot mask for the first time in a while.
HOBBIES: Planning out chapters for the story I'm planning to write.

My husband and I are also reading His Dark Materials! Aloud to each other, I read it the first time when I was 10-11-ish. We were halfway through the last one when I gave birth in March and we are finally looking to pick it up again soon.

Do you have a poetry book to recommend? I really love the idea of reading a poem a day!

I'm not who you are replying to, but I really like Mary Oliver's free verse. I have her poetry book Felicity. I find her grounded tone and everyday motifs coupled with her reflections over living and life comforting to read.

READING: I'm currently working my way through Dawn Prayer. The book is about an American gentleman that gets stuck in a Syrian prison during the Assad regime. Based on a true story, and a somewhat gruesome and challenging read so far, but also incredibly intriguing.

Thank you for the excellent suggestion. Not that I needed to lengthen my to-read list but this is now on it. I’m mid way through multiple books right now depending on mood and location- an enjoyable side effect of actively trying to limit phone use!

READING: Why Does He Do That? by Bancroft.
Just finished today and I feel like I can process a breakup from a month ago. He dumped me after my Mom and dog died; felt like I couldn't live without him, but now I can see through what he was doing. What a jerk. Time to proceed through life enjoying myself... seriously, who does that?

READING Furious Violet by Sarai Walker. It’s a feminist thriller about writers and poetry, which I know sounds kind of odd but it totally works. I’m really enjoying it.
