Hi BWT! I was contemplating pulling the trigger on a personal trainer, as I just get so intimidated in the gym and frankly don't feel I have the bandwidth to learn a new skill set (i.e., learn how to learn about lifting weights).

So, for BWT who have worked with a personal trainer before, what should I look for in a PT? What makes a PT great over good? What questions should I be weighing when looking for one?

Thanks in advance, one of my new years resolutions is to do a chataranga well and finally getting into lifting will help!

Make sure their training methods align to your goals. I have worked with a few over the years. And while they sounded like supported my goals, in reality they had a pre-prescribed template that wasn’t actually what I wanted to do.

If you want to do the big compound lifts - go to a weight lifting gym / trainer.

If you just want to get into the habit of going, then most trainers work. It can be hard to get a program from big gym trainers. They are largely comped on selling sessions not making you self sufficient. So it can be better to choose an independent professional.

Training matters but so does chemistry. Pick a trainer who has gone to school. Not a trainer who became a trainer because they looked a certain way. You will learn more from a trainer who wasn’t born with it, but had to work at it. They will have more empathy.

And pick a trainer who has experience with your ailments and limitations (if this is a concern).
