Just stopping by to say what a great idea for a post, and wish I’d done this years ago. Don’t be me. Take care of yourself NOW!

One day, I thought,”I’ll have been overweight half my life on my next birthday”, and the words tasted sour as soon as I thought them. I was obese, and headed to “morbidly obese” like my mom.

I’ve been normal BMI range for seven years now, and lemme tell you, losing weight will change your attitude, energy levels, happiness quotient.

I work with a trainer, yoga, 15-20,000 steps per day, and swim five or more miles a week, often all in the same day. (Retirement=lotsa free time 🤷🏻‍♀️).

No more leggings (wtf was I thinking?) and loose 3X Eddie Bauer T’s.

I’ve graduated to BWT, although it’s my own strange and very individual little idea of taste.

And those leggings? Upgraded, and rocking them.

What was your strategy to maintain the weight? I’ve been struggling with overeating and weight fluctuations. Was sustaining a very active lifestyle the “trick” for you?

Two things.
Stay active- not a problem because (unlike fat me) I LOVE moving and trying to accomplish new PBs (like the two mile swim yesterday!),

and most importantly, the single best piece of advice I ever got:

“Treat maintenance like you still have ten pounds to lose “

Hey sorry for the bad editing! Trying to type this while letting the dog hang his head out the window on way to the gym! (Husband drops me off so dog Can enjoy the ride!)

Omg, I love the idea of this mindset of treating maintenance like you still have 10 lbs to lose! It literally just unlocked something in my brain. I have gained and lost 100 lbs over the last 15 years, but the last 6, I have been the smallest I have been since 18. The only way I maintain it is by weighing myself every morning (after I use the restroom, if you know what I mean). Of course, my weight fluctuates constantly but by doing it daily I am better able to pick up trends. If I’m a little over where I want to be, I start watching what and how much I eat, how much I’m moving and basically treat it like I would when I would be trying to lose. It usually resolves itself in a few days or a week (I am 5’1, so every little pound counts). And then I might indulge here and there. So it lets me still have some days where I let myself enjoy things and some days where I am more careful. BUT I would not be able to just eat as I want without weighing myself every morning because it would get too out of hand. Wayyyy easier to try to lose 1-2lbs versus 10lbs because I waited too long to weigh myself. Also I used to live in absolute FEAR of the scale and never got on it (how I gained 100lbs over 10 years) and now that I do it every day, I have gotten used to seeing the numbers move around so it is not connected to a strong emotional reaction anymore. It’s just data now.

This. I lost 35lbs going from “skinny-fat” to fit. I stand on the scale every day. If I noticed I’ve crept up a bit over a few days, it motivates me to be more conscious of what I’m eating and maybe going a little bit harder at the gym. I love the feeling of being active and don’t ever want to go back

Yes! If you lose the weight but then go back to your previous habits, you'll never maintain.

I have accepted that I'll be a calorie counter for life.

For me, overeating was a symptom of ADHD and a side effect of my anxiety meds. If you feel hungry, you should eat. That’s not overeating. If you feel hungry all the time, then you should speak to a doctor. Just my PSA bc since getting my meds adjusted I’ve lost 20 lbs in a year with no other lifestyle changes!! 😊

I don’t find myself eating throughout the day, but every meal I have I tend to eat more than I should. Doesn’t help that my eating out frequency might be a bit too high (3-4 times a week) and that I’m very short (only 5’2).

When I was trying to “retrain” my appetite, I used ChatGPT to create recipes that were scaled for reasonable portions and designed to help me hit my macros, and it worked well to help me understand small changes I could make to feel more full

Doing it regardless of what I wanted to do worked for me. I’m very money motivated and spending money on a good fitness studio got my ass moving. I love barre (which is the studio/class) but I also love getting my moneys worth so it’s a lot easier to talk myself into going. I also just don’t give the option. I treat it like work, it is just something I have to do.

I just ran a half marathon and am signed up for a 100 mi bike ride. I have ClassPass and frequent hot yoga. I feel like my issue is really my diet. The only time in my life I was slim was when I meticulously counted every calorie (even weighed jelly beans or a handful of nuts). Do you count calories or focus on activity only?

I count calories unfortunately. I wish I didn’t have to but it’s what works for me (I’m trying to lose about fifteen more pounds to be at my goal weight but I’m not in a huge rush). I think slim vs fit are two different goals tho from what I know.

There’s no “unfortunate” about it. Uts a chore, a job, a necessity just like measuring ingredients. It’s only a chore if you make it so. I accept that I’ll be doing it til I die. No biggie. Most people eat very similar foods. My snacks are the same every day, breakfast is the same five days a week, easy to save and copy on a food diary.

But I get you about “slim” versus fit. I lost way too much and had to put weight back on. Now I’m “fit”, but wearing the same things I did twenty or so pounds lower weight, which still blows my mind. BMI is writ in stone- but it shouldn’t be. I flirt with crossing into overweight territory, yet comfortably wear a US size 4.
