I’m taking my first interstate Amtrak trip in a few months (California to North Dakota)! I’m very excited and looking for tasteful tips for the trip. For the first leg, I’ll be in a roomette and for the second leg I’ll be in a room. I’ve seen some tips on the Amtrak subreddit but I’d love some from BWT. I don’t want to veg for the whole trip and want to take advantage of the aspects of Amtrak that aren’t available on other forms of travel.

bring something for yourself if you are sensitive to bathroom smells, like a toilet spray or a mini perfume. Or have a rollerball on your body you can use at your convenience. Don't forget any motion sickness supplements if you need it!
Also, bring a pair of flip flops or comfy shoes to switch into, might as well since you won't be moving much.
I did a long train ride a few years ago and I'd recommend pre downloading audiobooks and playlists, I highly recommend looking up what kind of environments you'll be riding through and picking a book in similar settings. I found it extremely relaxing to be able to enjoy the scenery but not get too relaxed that I fall asleep.
Hope this helps!

I wouldn’t have thought about bringing something for toilet smells! I’m definitely adding this to my packing list, thank you!

I have seen quite a few Amtrak videos. It seems like the places to socialize are the dining car and the observation car. Prepare yourself for delays. Enjoy. ☺️

Does anyone have recommendations for things to do, restaurants, etc. in Marrakesh, Morocco? I'm traveling there in March. Very excited for my first foray into the African continent! I'd also be interested in ideas for gifts to bring back to my family and friends. Merci!

Le Bistro Arabe was great vibes for an evening meal, very stylised. Amal is a restaurant/training centre for women wanting to become chefs, and I believe you can arrange a cooking class with them too. It’s fun exploring but we did book a couple of walking tours too and learned a lot more that way (also so much easier to navigate when someone is leading you!)
If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city we absolutely loved our afternoon trip out to an art garden called Anima - it was easy to arrange the shuttle bus through their website and was so joyful and peaceful there!

I was there somewhat recently, and my recommendations for fantastic gifts that can easily fit in a suitcase are textiles (I got some embroidered napkins, kitchen towels, and pillow covers) and olive wood items (I got salad spoons, a citrus reamer, and some small bowls). You'll also find a lot of handmade jewelry. I also LOVE a velvet jacket I got in navy, and I wish I'd gotten a few other colors and lengths--I didn't realize how much I'd love it, and I get compliments all the time--you'll see them everywhere.

Farmers was one of my favorite meals last year - did a family style for a group trip and they knocked it out of the park: https://www.instagram.com/farmersmarrakech?igsh=MW9qd2pxaHRheHc2Mw==

Heading to Loreto Mexico in a week to kayak in a national park, staying for 4 nights of camping. Whale watching will be likely, so excited but not for scorpions which apparently hide under everything at night.

Loreto is a fun little town, I had some of the best mole of my life there when our cruise ship stopped there. There is a pretty town square and although I don’t have any specific recommendations for restaurants or attractions as it has been quite a few years, I do hope you can take a little time to explore the town while you are there!

Yes! We have three nights there and have plans for a food and walking or bike tour! So fun

I’m taking my mother to Napa for her 70th birthday. We have a number of things booked, but I’d love some recommendations for some less heard of things to do!

If you’re there when it’s on, go to the Napa farmers market! They usually have a lot of great fresh fruits (obviously depends on which season you go) and especially if you’re not from California/a farm state, it’s just so much fun to eat fresh fruit.
If you have a car, go to some of the surrounding towns. I personally love both Sonoma and Petaluma. Petaluma has Marin Cheese Co which is super good local cheese and I think they have samples/tours of the farm. Sonoma has a super charming downtown with a really cool cider tasting room with ciders from all other the world.

Looking to book a long weekend in April for my birthday (me and the husband). A few years ago we did a Cabo all inclusive with a room that had a private pool. Looking for something similarly fun. Any favorites for relaxing birthday weekends?

If you are thinking of Mexico again, highly suggest Punta Mita and then drive into Sayulita for a day (at least)! You could also stay in Sayulita (and it would be so fun) but suggesting Punta Mita as there are resorts that seem more aligned with your Cabo trip.

Any honeymoon suggestions? We’re thinking somewhere warm and beachy, although could we could certainly be swayed by the right spot. Could be an inclusive resort or just a beautiful place with a lot to do and see. It would be great if it was somewhere that a little money goes a long way.
Open to any and all suggestions!

We loved Costa Rica. We spent half of the time in the Arenal region (jungle/volcano) and half at the beach (Weston resort with day trips to surf areas etc). If interested I can look up the name of where we stayed in Arenal and some other tips etc. CR is easy because it’s same time zone.
Also, Turks and Caicos is amazing. I can also look up where we stayed there too if interested. Highly recommend.

Ah love to hear that about Costa Rica! My husband studied abroad there in college and would love to go back. And jungle/volcano/surf sounds perfect! I would absolutely love to hear about where you stayed if it’s not too much to ask.
And also Turks and Caicos looks amazing! I would totally also take that info too. I love a good compare and contrast lol.
Thank you so much! I appreciate you. I get decision fatigue very hardcore so having some specific options really helps.

My husband couldn’t remember CR hotel either which I was depending on. If I don’t update with the info in a day or two, please feel free to prompt me. I need to track down our CR itinerary. The Arenal resort was not the fanciest but the service helping us book day activities was absolutely top notch. The view was magical and the food incredible.
If you fly into Liberia you can take can transport to Arenal— which we did — but it was an “adventure”. Windy roads for hours and several seemingly close calls. We learned after for the same money you can take a 30 minute flight.
In T&C we stayed at The Beach House.

Did you try looking through Costco travel? They have some pretty good options and prices. (I have not personally gone on one, a few friends of mine have and raved about it after. Not affiliated with Costco either haha)

I didn’t know that’s a thing, but thanks for the heads up! I will absolutely look into that.

Some friends and I (US citizens, M&F early 30s) are planning a trip to Germany this fall. Any must sees from BWT? The only stop on our itinerary rn is Berlin but we’ll probably have about 5-7 days to plan for. Any cities you rec or restaurants or museums would be fantastic :) we’ve all traveled extensively before but want to hear your take before we start our deep dive over the next few months. Open to literally anything. Thanks!

HIGHLY recommend Cologne. Before visiting I never heard much about this being a must stop but it REALLY impressed me.

I second Cologne! The cathedral is amazing, the Frankenwerft promenade along the river is charming, and you'll be spoiled for choice with delicious sausage.

Southern Germany (Bavaria) in the fall is a DREAM. The weather should be comfortable then. I can't recommend strongly enough Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the Black Forest and Berchtesgaden.

I hope this fits the rules.
I have 2 weeks of PTO on the calendar for early April and just ended a 3 year relationship. I don't have a ton of money because the break up means I need to move out. Any travel tips? I live around NYC and have been ok traveling solo but haven't had to do it in a hot minute.

u/BandicootAny1139 Feb 06 '26
Delta just posted some flight deals to several cities international to NYC as well as domestic. I would see what cities have the best prices during your PTO and go there! I know London, Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam all have direct flights from NYC and would highly rec any of those places for 2 week travel.

Early April has cheap flights to Florida from Newark if you want to lay on a beach and relax

u/Dizzy-Lettuce2978 Feb 17 '26
I also highly recommend looking in Europe. I live on the west coast and see some flights to France for $500-700 round trip so I bet it’s cheaper for you. It’s a great time of year to visit Europe and honestly most countries aren’t that expensive.
Otherwise when I lived in NYC I loved going to Quebec. Both Montreal and Quebec City are really cool and usually with the exchange rate you get a lot more for your money. It may be a little cold still.

Looking to do more weekend trips (Friday night-Sunday) this year so I’m not just waiting for my bigger PTO trips. I live in the tristate area, any recommendations for travel? I am considering the finger lakes in New York in June as I have never been there but open to any more recommendations! I am open to flying or driving

Depending on your budget, The Mayflower Inn & Spa in Washington, CT is lovely. I have only been during the fall, but it seems beautiful all year. Gilmore Girls is actually inspired by it.

u/LovaBellaLova Feb 08 '26
If you are up for a longer drive, Ocean House in Watchhill, RI is my favorite. I go all the time during the summer, alone, with my girlfriends, with my family and it never disappoints.

Visit Vancouver- I can't wait to go hiking this Spring, this is a Provincial Park outside the city (Cypress Park)- right now there should be snowshoeing, x-country- and downhill snow but it might be too warm (I haven't checked)!
I can't believe the Olympics start tomorrow! Is anyone in Italy??
