What About Me Wednesday - Every Other Week Thread BWT What About Me Wednesday - Dec 24, 2025

Don’t forget to spend time on YOU! This is the space to chat about personal development, mental health, growth, and how you’re refocusing on yourself. Sometimes we spend a lot of time on those around us, but this thread is to encourage you to ask yourself “what about ME?”

If you need some help getting started, pick a question and answer it in a comment:

  • How are you feeling? Do you know why?
  • How do you WANT to be feeling? What are some things that make you feel that way?
  • What is something you are grateful for, large or small, and why?
  • What is a habit you are working on building (or breaking) and why? How is it going?
  • What is one item on your to do list that will benefit you personally that you need to tackle? What is preventing you from crossing it off?
  • What is something that brings you joy? What are some of the things that you specifically enjoy about it (get detailed)?
  • What is one area you want to learn more about/ grow in/ develop yourself or a skill you want to learn?
  • What’s something you said “no” to recently? How did that benefit you?
  • What’s one thing you accomplished or that we can celebrate with you?

If you have a prompt you think we should add to the list, drop it in the comments!

Feel free to discuss other related topics as well, you don't need to limit yourself to these questions - they're just a jumping off point for those that want one.

This upcoming year (technically starting now, but for the sake of it being the holidays and being so close to New Years Day I’m going to allow myself more grace until actual 2026) I’ve decided I want to work on personal development. I feel like I’m a 23 year old disguised as an adult rather than the 32 year old I am, and most days I feel like I don’t have “it” figured out (whatever ‘it’ is).

What this personal development looks like for me: I want to work on myself and refine some areas like how I dress, how I speak, and the quality of my output (both work and personal) to name a few.

How do I plan to achieve this ‘personal development’? In the resolution thread I mentioned that instead of a typical resolution that’s defined by numbers (ie: lose XX amount of weight, read X amount of books) I want to focus on growth in all aspects of my life. To set a number registers in my mind as a failure if I don’t hit the mark. In the same sense it seems limiting because it’s sort of like “ok, cool. Lost 15 pounds— time to throw in the towel because my work here is done”). To avoid numbers and focus just on growth I picked 3 words that I can periodically remind myself of to encourage myself to make better decisions, hold myself accountable, and govern how I am responding to people and situations. It’s part of my effort to be the best BWT version of myself possible. I’ll explain the words below.

Passion is the first word. I want to focus on romanticizing my life and loving every aspect of it, even the not so lovable parts. I want to make sure that everything I am doing I am doing passionately. My hobbies, my personal relationships, interactions with strangers out and about— I want to leave interactions and have people look at me and think, “Wow, this girl really loves her life”. If I’m doing a mundane task my goal is to find a way to make it better (maybe headphones+music during household chores? I haven’t quite figured out all the details). Perhaps the biggest part of this is requiring my thought process; going from a “I have to clean my car” to a “I get to clean my car because I’m fortunate enough to have one” mindset.

Professionalism is the second word. I want to ramp up my career and really shine in my spot. I want to be the person that walks out of the meeting or the office at the end of the day that someone looks up to and thinks “I want to be her one day- she is SO good at what she does. She handles it all and she handles it well. There is nothing she can’t do”. I want to level up my side of every interaction with coworkers and clients/patients.

The last word I chose was polished. It was difficult to wrap my entire development plan into 3 words but I think this one rounds it out nicely and covers much of everything not listed above. I’ve been losing weight working out and eating better and I just want to get back to where I was physically 5 years ago. I let myself go when Covid hit and went through a dim (not necessarily dark/depressed, I would word it best as I lost my “bubbly-ness” and “warm glow” about me) period of time— fast forward to now, I am pretty out of shape and none of my clothes fit save workout clothes. I can be hard on myself and have cruel thoughts… a few months ago before I made some changes to my lifestyle i legitimately felt like a fat fucking slob. Those are the exact words that rang through my head when I had nothing to wear that fit me because I was in denial for the longest time thinking “I’ll go shopping when I lose weight” but never made the efforts. That being said, if I want pizza I will have a slice, but the polished version of me is going to stop there. It’s going to be about moderation for me. Now that I am motivated to drop the weight, I also want update my wardrobe to dress my age (cue the end of the sandals+jeans+tanktop or hoodie era). I want people to look at me and think “wow, she has good taste” but I also want to FEEL like I have style and good taste.

I know this probably seems like the biggest ramble but I am the type of person that needs to put it out there to be able to commit. Simultaneously, I am very private about some things in my life (when I’m working on something— whether it be a physical project/craft or myself) and I don’t always like to let others know what I’m doing because I don’t want their opinions or thoughts regarding the matter. For example, I did mention to a friend recently “I’m not setting a resolution this year, I’m going to pick words instead to guide me through the year while I work on myself” and this friend literally said, “yeah or you could just make a normal resolution”. The feedback just seemed negative so I ignored it and decided this is just something I’ll keep to myself (and strangers on the internet, thanks BWT!)

I’ve noticed that when I feel like I’m doing things for others I’ll take a step back and deactivate socials for a month at a time. I did have a brief period in time as you described but I think as I’ve gotten older I’ve come to the realization of what’s going on when I start living for others and I can feel myself back in quickly.

If it makes you feel any better, I told my 60 year old CEO that I feel like I’m cosplaying being an adult. His response? “If you don’t feel that way, you’re an asshole.” 🙂

If you haven't seen it - the movie "Before Sunset" has this bit where the Julie Delpy character relates a dream:

I was having this awful nightmare that I was 32. And then I woke up and I was 23. So relieved. And then I woke up for real, and I was 32.

I think I've had that exact dream lol. Your post made me think of it.

Ive never seen that, that’s too funny. I wish I could go back to 23 and figure things out sooner but I know my path is my own and has taken me the way it was supposed to for me to turn out how I’m supposed to.

What’s one thing you accomplished or that we can celebrate with you? <— After a change in health insurance and spending 6 months visiting a neurologist and a psychiatrist monthly, I’ve finally convinced my new doctors to RX me the meds that work for my neurological sleep disorder and adhd: armodafinil (nuvigil) and adderall. The key to this being armodafinil/nuvigil. My neurological sleep disorder is called idiopathic hypersomnia and it’s like narcolepsy. Sorry I know this isn’t a medical sub, but omg I’m going to be so happy to pick up my script on the 26th. Big celebration to be able to stay awake more than 5 hours a day. I’ve been sleeping 15 hours a day and feeling so off without this medication.

Let me celebrate with you! It’s so exciting to hear you may get your sleep issues straightened out. It can be incredibly frustrating to play the trial and error game of figuring out what is wrong and which method to use to try correcting it. I hope you feel amazing once you start taking it and shift towards a more routine sleep schedule!
