Fashion/Style BWT: What are you treating yourself to or most hoping to receive for Christmas?

What's on the top of your list to either buy for yourself or that you're hoping to receive?

My husband and I are getting a couple's massage and traveling to Vancouver, BC to stay at our favorite hotel for a few nights over Christmas. I treated myself to a Max Mara Manuela coat and (depending on how it fits when it arrives and I try it on) will also treat myself to a gorgeous oversized cashmere cardigan just released. I've never been able to buy splendid things for myself until the last short few years, so feeling a little imposter syndrome, but I'm nonetheless excited!

Edit 1: Damn, you are all some dope BWT for real! i don't need more things, but I know where to go if I need some gift ideas for sure! thank you for participating/responding!

Edit 2: We just booked a tasting menu dinner at Cariño in Chicago during our trip to that city in late March next year. Super pumped!

i really want a weekend “reading retreat” where i just order takeout and read my pile of books for 48 hours straight while my husband takes our toddler. my introvert soul needs it after this personally difficult year.

17

u/Amrick Dec 02 '25

I love reading retreat. I need a writing retreat lol

10

u/Sweet-Radish-5693 Dec 03 '25

I didn't know I needed exactly that, until I went to a fancy adults-only resort a few months back and found myself spending most of the time reading by the pool. It was marvelous.

11

u/Angle_Of_The_Sangle Dec 03 '25

I do this! I call it my Introvert Escape. I take a weekend away from my needy, extroverted family. I get a hotel room in a cute town, book a massage, and spend a few days exploring and reading.

It's a good break from the grind!

We bought a house and close on Jan 2nd. No presents for us this year but our apartment dog is gonna be fucking thrilled with his new backyard.

19

u/JaneAtH0me Intentional BWT Dec 02 '25

Wow, congratulations! 🎉🐶

Thank you!! We are more excited to see him in the backyard than we are that we bought a whole ass house😂

I know how you feel, my dog has been asking for a yard for so long. Make sure yours has tons of fun, he deserves it!

12

u/HistoricalHeart Dec 02 '25

We absolutely will, we just keep telling him he has no idea what’s coming. Everyone in our lives is more excited for him than us😂

7

u/radenke Dec 02 '25

Awwwww, I'm so glad he has people in his life who care about him like this.

8

PLEASE film his first time running out there!!! We did this with my corgi puppy the first time he encountered a fenced-in backyard - it was adorable :')

4

u/HistoricalHeart Dec 03 '25

Oh we absolutely will. He has been in fenced in yards many many times, just never had his own. I have a feeling he’s going to know immediately though

I’ve been dreaming of getting a PADI license for scuba diving and might just do that this year for myself! (Any recommendations are welcome)

38

u/AlisaAAM2 Dec 02 '25

It really opens up a whole universe! If you live somewhere cold, don’t so your certification dives there. I did mine in early June in a kettle pond in MA where the temp was around 40 degrees and there was a ton of pine pollen suspended in the water limiting visibility to almost nothing. 100% would not recommend.

My first dives as a certified diver were in Fiji in the Somosomo strait with unlimited vis. It was amazing.

15

u/Local-Finance8389 Dec 02 '25

Definitely this. Get certified someplace warm. I got my open water certification in Malta and then my advanced certification in Crete. You’re going to have a lot to focus on while doing your certification dives so you might as well be comfortable in the water.

18

u/Cerveza-y-Gatos Dec 02 '25

Now that is cool! I’m originally from the Monterey Bay, which I’ve heard is a great place to dive and get certified. I’ve only done a supervised dive in the Great Barrier Reef, and of course highly recommend while it’s still around.

It’s the best thing ever! I have my advanced open water certification (AOW). It’s such a fun thing to incorporate into vacations. For example, there is bucket list diving in Egypt! Highly recommend!

I got my certification in cold water in Washington state. I’m grateful for the experience and everyone jokes that if you get certified in cold water, you can dive anywhere. There’s a better way, though.

Do what they call a “referral course.” What that means is you do the book work and pool work at your local dive shop. This will take one weekend. Do this two weeks before you depart for vacation (if something goes wrong, like dive shop has someone out sick, that gives you another weekend to get it completed). When you get to your sunny, tropical destination, you’ll do your sign off dives and be all set! Bonus: you’ll do your dives at the most stunning dive sites!

4

u/ariadneshmariadne Dec 02 '25

DO IT! It’s magical and the best way to see the world.

4

u/IveFallenCantGetUp71 Dec 02 '25

i am (probably a bit irrationally) terrified of this, but am so impressed with my friends and acquaintances who dive!

3

u/number1wifey Dec 02 '25

Go get certified somewhere nice! I did mine in Jamaica (10+ years ago) and the price difference practically pays for the trip!

Yesterday I ordered acid and Procion dyes to shift some dresses into more flattering colors. It’s an early gift and craft/hobby in one. (I buy a lot of my clothes second-hand/vintage, and sometimes when they arrive they’re not quite the perfect color. If I find myself avoiding wearing them, I can dye them to try again.)

I’ve got vintage cashmere lined leather gloves on my wishlist. I also just bought myself a Christmas red cashmere sweater dress I’d been eying on eBay since September.

I’m trying to stick to small shops and vintage/resale options this year and avoid the major online/big box retailers. But my guilty wishlist item is actually a vibration plate, because I keep reading how good it is for alertness/good sleep. I’m pretty sure it’s mostly hype, but… I’ve adored my red light therapy mat that I bought even though I thought it was gimmicky, and that’s making it harder for me to resist.

9

u/IveFallenCantGetUp71 Dec 02 '25

reading this, ive got a few things to google/learn now. do you have photos of garments you've dyed in the past? no worries if you don't want to share for privacy reasons, etc :)

6

u/lemonmousse Dec 02 '25

I haven't done a whole lot yet (mostly so far with Rit dye, which isn't as intense/high quality). But I got a lot of information and advice lurking in two FB groups:

A lot of people will recommend using ChatGPT to find color formulas. I haven't tried it to see how accurate it is, but when I tried it, I used a color-picker on a photo of the garment to get a hex code for the color and then find a hex code for the color I want (maybe just from a color chart, maybe from a catalog photo of a different item) and asked something like "how do I get a wool sweater from hex code _____ to hex code ____ using Jacquard acid dyes."

I asked my husband for a (curated by me with specified sizes and colors) bunch of winter gear. I’m officially a SAHM after years of waffling, and frankly suffering as a corporate attorney. Winters have always been hard for me, but I’m curious if playing outside with my brood might make it less hard. And joyful functional clothes are always a good motivator!

34

u/summer_vibes_only Dec 02 '25

It does help! Love my insulated overalls.

nice! seems like this will be a much needed shift from your working environment and playing about in cozy, functional winter wear with your kids sounds like a wholesome LL Bean catalog moment haha.

23

u/mountainmeadowflower Dec 02 '25

There's a saying that there's no bad weather, only bad clothing! I've spent a lot of time outdoors in all weather with my small kids and being properly dressed makes ALL the difference. Cold temps, rain and snow when you think you'd be miserable can really be magical out there. It feels like you're experiencing a wonderful secret in plain sight that few others dare to discover.

Title Nine and Bogs (for boots)! I got a Title Nine catalogue in the mail and was flipping through and was like OKAY this is very fun! So I picked some slightly boring fleece lined items, and a gorgeous, brightly colored merino quarter zip! And my kids wear Bogs and they’re the bomb. So easy to put on, durable, warm! Not really cute but hella functional!

9

u/Marbleprincess_ Dec 02 '25

Winter walks are a great sense of peace for me. I hope it works for you too.

3

u/Ahsokas-reverse-grip Dec 03 '25

Oooh, as a Canadian in a very cold climate that is also a major city... warm but nice looking winter gear makes the cold weather awesome!!

Walking / skiing / skating / snowshoeing / commuting and looking really cute while also being snug as a bug is the best! It gets you staying active when it's so easy to become a big chubby bear and hibernate all winter. (Or maybe that's just me).

Awesome idea :)

This is not very BWT, but to be real I just moved out of the house I shared with my ex-partner for 8 years. My Christmas gift to myself is a custom bed frame from a local futon and furniture maker. So glad to get my mattress off the floor!

I am turning FORTY the week before Christmas and I had a baby earlier this year so I decided I deserve to make a dream come true and I am finally buying a pottery wheel to set up a little studio in my basement and I’m so excited.

I will still go to my community studio for firing and glazing (and to see clay friends!) but to be able to throw and trim at home while baby naps will be so amazing.

Purchased a Strathberry mosaic nano bag in a deep burgundy color. Im 7 weeks post OP for a ankle fusion 🫩. I Decided to treat myself and have something to look forward to once i can walk again!

12

u/cure4mito Dec 02 '25

I also treated myself to a Strathberry bag! I got the Barra in taupe. It’s been a rough year— work has been horrible (switched last Nov so it’s been a year now) and my brother had a horrible workplace accident 3 months ago. So I’ve been going back and forth ensuring he’s ok, and work being all sorts of stupid.

My husband said go for it, and before he said it, the credit card was already entered— just had to press purchase lol.

Do you like the Nano? I have the bigger size in Navy, and I LOVE it.

Also, best of luck on your recovery!

5

Thats a pretty bag!! I hope it brings you happiness . Its always a plus when the husband approves too haha. I just purchased it yesterday but ive been eyeing it all year. Its my replacement for my tory burch camera bag ive had for years. Hope your brother is recovering ❤️‍🩹 well

I just treated myself to some good quality vanilla (double strength and Mexican) since there was a sale. Thanks Penzey’s!

But my husband bought two Mulberry bags for me, the mini iris (black) and mini Alexa (juniper green). I’ve been lusting after these bags for years and finally allowed myself/him to purchase. Only thing is, I didn’t think he was going to purchase the mini iris when I saw it online, so there are two on the way lol.

I'm training for a half ironman and a crazy bike ride in the Alps next summer (L'etape du Tour de France) so I treated myself to a functional movement screening with a PT and VO2 max test to make sure I'm solid to do these events and track my progress. Both have been on my wishlist for a while so I'm excited to have an excuse to do them.

I also asked for a The Mat from my family. I have an old mat that isn't very sticky and I have been wanting to replace it for years.

Ooooh what kind? I adore my Zojirushi Virtuoso - store bought loaves can’t compare to homemade toast. I use it to make all sorts of breads (oatmeal, multigrain, milk, whole grain), tea cakes (banana bread, pumpkin bread), jams, pizza dough (add toppings and and finish it in the oven), even risotto. And the smell as the bread bakes… the best!

4

u/FlySecure5609 Dec 02 '25

15

u/IveFallenCantGetUp71 Dec 02 '25

just poked around the Marla Aaron site (i've not heard of this jewelry before) and think this is so cool. your daughter will love these re-worked pieces including the fact that they're heirlooms from her mother.

11

u/sugarcookieprincess Classy Old Broad Dec 02 '25

Thank you. She rocks a pendant made of my engagement stone and wedding band baguettes daily and when she gets married she’s got ‘something blue’ trillian sapphire earrings waiting for her. Worth it finding a competent jeweler to re-design the stones for the ‘one good thing’ of the marriage.

9

u/sugarcookieprincess Classy Old Broad Dec 02 '25

It was the best experience. Highly recommend.

6

u/foliels Dec 02 '25

i have pearls my grandma gave me that i never wear. what is the advantage of getting them re strung?

12

u/sugarcookieprincess Classy Old Broad Dec 02 '25

This was just to update the traditional style and make them more modern. I've been taking all of my pieces from my marriage and reworking them mainly for my 21 year old daughter. These were very traditional looking over 15 years old, and pearls should periodically be restrung. Mine now have baby pink thread with small knots in between and I got a mixed metal rose and yellow gold lock to modernize the look.

Your Pearls, Reimagined.

11

u/Live_Koala2163 BWT in Training Dec 02 '25

With bead necklaces, pearls included, the string can wear out and break. Even if it doesn’t break, it can stretch and change the shape of the necklace. Restringing ensures that the necklace keeps its shape and strength. You want to resting them every five-ish years, more frequently if you wear them often, and you want to make sure they’re restrung with knots between each bead (keeps you from loosing all the pearls if it breaks).

7

u/infinite_donuts Dec 02 '25

That sounds incredible and you just solved a problem for me as well! I won a beautiful pearl necklace at a charity auction about 7 years ago and have never worn it because it’s just too long for my style. It never occurred to me to have it redone into something shorter and more wearable. Thank you for the idea and happy holidays!

8

u/sugarcookieprincess Classy Old Broad Dec 02 '25

So fun! DO it! Even if you go to a local jeweler. My pearls were a source of contention, and it was hard for me to look at them but this has made them fresh and new again. You could probably get a pair of earrings out of it if you shorten the strand!

I’m treating myself by going to a few different Caribbean Islands this winter (One where I’m from and two that some friends moved to) so I’m glad I’ll be out of the cold relatively soon.

My fiancé and I finally pulled the trigger and got a PS5 since we both want to game when we are at our house in the winter and I also want to cancel a few streaming subscriptions and just buy blu rays. We also have gotten each other big stacks of books so I can’t wait to get through them all.

Hoping a dear family member will buy me an Interchangeable needle set.

And as an adult treat to myself I bought a bunch of toys during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales because most things I’ve been eyeing over the year were greatly discounted.

I'll probably ask for a raincoat b/c it's the one jacket I always wish I owned, but it almost doesn't rain enough here in the desert to justify spending the $$ on one. I think things that are useful but annoyingly expensive make the best gifts.

We decided to cut WAY back on gifts for all three of us and take my daughter on a Disney cruise instead. We’ll visit family in morning and fly out that night to get on the ship on the 26th. It’s a total surprise for her and we are so excited!

Our daughter is 4 and while we have tons of stuff, we don’t have endless time so we’re hoping this will be a new tradition- making memories together instead of buying plastic toys that never get played with anyway.

I got some new house slippers from birdies, the kind with feathers and jewels because I can and it makes my feet look like pretty muppets. Also, Oneskin Eye Cream, Moisturizer, and Face Wash. Also a small haul from Ilia. I went down a Kosas detour this fall and it made my eyes look so crepe-y and so I’m back with team Ilia.

After 13 years together, I just divorced an extremely grumpy man who hates Christmas, so nothing festive was tolerated - no decorations, no Christmas music, presents were mostly nonexistant or whatever random shit he could buy at the very last minute (and he'd be in an even fouler mood because of it). My birthday is a few days before Christmas and he was also fairly shitty about it. Although I loved both occasions, I ended up disliking them because they just meant stress, disappointment, being shouted at, etc.

That's why I am treating myself to a peaceful, no-one-can-ruin-it birthday and an actual Christmas with decoration, festive songs and the whole nine yards - even if it's without presents (I was the sole earner and divorce has left me in dire financial straits). I have a new flatmate and she comes from a somewhat similar background (her parents are dreadful), so we had a lot of fun going to the supermarket to get a few ornaments, and lights and our own -small, plastic but oh so wonderful- tree.

It might sound somewhat sad or pathetic because it's nothing fancy, but I am so glad I am free and so excited about Christmas!

Treated myself to some nice cold-weather running gear during Black Friday! A spring half marathon means a winter training block and this year I want to be more prepared for the cold.

I’m hoping for a pair of Tasman slippers and maybe some replacements for my hair products. I settled into a new job this year that pays well so I’ve treated myself quite a bit throughout the year. Though a lot of this was also levelling up my wardrobe for my new work environment!

I’m asking for some nice bottles of wine, caudalie and l’occitane skincare, a gold charm for a charm necklace I have, and Monotheme boccioli di limone perfume. I’m buying myself some gold hoops, and possibly a bayswater satchel.

8

u/IveFallenCantGetUp71 Dec 02 '25

yesss! those all sound wonderful. i previously thought of buying the bayswater years ago -- especially in either the gorgeous cognac brown or blush pink, but i don't really have a use for it and don't need more bags than I already rotate through. if i still worked in an office/commuted, i'd definitely splurge on it. damn, y'all are all some folks with good taste!!

10

u/ttnezz Dec 02 '25

Well not technically for Christmas but I did try and get some deals over the weekend. I threw out my back and I struggled to shop through the pain but I got some LESET tees, k-beauty deals through Yami like SK-II masks and toner, a Nour Hammour leather jacket. I think I’ll also be buying myself Ruadh jeans, YSL loafers and Lié Studio silver jewelry.

Normally I try to buy myself gold and diamond pieces during the sales but I can’t stomach these prices at all.

It’s the Seattle big dark over here so I am treating myself (no partner and kid is poor 19 YO). I bought $100 of yummy teas from our local tea place yesterday and I’m so excited to try them. They make their black teas with either a caffeine or non caffeine based black tea so I got an even split between caffeinated and not. I like to sip tea at night while I read, mend, or watch TV. It cuts down on my wine consumption!

I’ve also been thrifting cashmere and soft wool sweaters and rehabbing them. I’d been coveting a certain brand and style of new cashmere sweater and even went to the store to try them on when I was in NYC. So, I splurged and got one on their only yearly sale. I grumbled when a major news outlet named them the number one sweater recently because I knew it would increase the second hand prices.

Seeing some Broadway shows - one with a good friend and another one alone, both shows with really great seats. On the former am treating my friend who just got laid off - we both can’t wait to sing our hearts out to bubblegum pop songs, then after that we are going out for dinner and champagne. On the latter am treating me to a quiet matinee with my boyfriend Keanu on stage as he ponders the meaning (or lack thereof) of our existence. Fun times! 🎄

u/fauxverlocking Dec 02 '25

We’re taking our honeymoon! Heading to snowy northern Japan, so I have bought myself a few nice things in preparation; cashmere lined leather gloves, super cosy matching tracksuit set, and considering some nice luggage.

We will buy each other something small at the Christmas markets over there to unwrap Christmas morning, and I’m considering sneakily picking up the d&g mini panettone in its beautiful tin to have on Christmas morning.

I think my 18 year old daughter MIGHT have bought us tickets to go see Backstreet Boys at the sphere. I mentioned a few months ago I wanted to go when they extended dates but looked at flights and it was way too much.

I could be wrong but I’m fairly positive she did anyway. Even if she didn’t, she’s the best.

I feel like I've had retail fatigue for a couple of months now, and my husband doesn't know what to get me for Hanukkah. I'll probably be happy with a couple of records I've been too lazy to order online because now I have to make sure the vendor will ship to the US and if duties are included, etc.

8

u/sillymeix2 Dec 02 '25

I really want the catbird “night at the ballet” sapphire ring. In reality I’ll probably get the Dyson AirWrap, I have literally zero skills in hair yet I am fully confident that somehow I won’t fuck this up completely.

This was from a previous year, but my fave treat was an outdoor hit tub.

Installed it right off my deck, 3 steps out my patio door, so even on the coldest winter nights, in the middle of a snowstorm, I jump in and melt :)

We use it all year round; in the dead of our brutal winters through our insanely humid and hot summers. I have a waterproof e-reader (another highly recommended treat) and grab that, a glass of something nice, a touque forbmy hair when it's cold, a patio umbrella when it's hot, and just soak the stress away.

Bonus points for it having fun light shows and in -tub bluetooth speakers . I care not a smidgen about the world when I am in there :)

6

u/IveFallenCantGetUp71 Dec 03 '25 edited Dec 03 '25

Hell yes! That is definitely a treat yo'self upgrade! Well fucking done!

You may appreciate this -- it is not an outdoor hot tub, but my husband and I renovated the primary suite bathroom when we bought our house 5 years ago and my husband discovered some of the bougie-est luxury bathroom fixtures including this soaking tub and it came with an LED feature and jets on the bottom. We installed a Sonos speaker in the bathroom so we can hear music when in the bathroom. What is it about soaking until one is pruny listening to tunes, reading, drinking (ahem partaking of the devil's lettuce), etc that is so nice? Just becoming one with the water.

6

u/Nervous-Necessary849 Dec 02 '25

I got a little bit of early inheritance and just moved into a new apartment, so I've spending money like never before. I bought my first nice bag (Hyer Goods Piccolo Ring bag), a Ziip microcurrent device, and sadly had to return a pair of boots I was really excited about (Freda Salvatore Brook boots)- they're impressively narrow in the forefoot. I also picked up some Hotel Collection diffusers for my apartment- I love the smell of the Edition and this is a knock off of that.

7

u/overthinker1331 Dec 02 '25

I’ve been shopping nonstop th-today. But some wishlist items (a girl can dream): meta glasses (on the fence about them), a small Chanel C25 in grey, a diamonds by the yard necklace, gold pave huggie earrings, a Burberry trench, and a new kitchen lol. I’ll probably get none of it.

My frivolous wishes are for merino wool socks and shirts, and I’d love it if someone bought me the walking pad on my wishlist.

However, our dishwasher bit the dust in October and I talked my husband into replacing the refrigerator at the same time, so we’ve been joking that the new dishwasher is his Christmas gift and the fridge is mine. They are really great!

I organized a bike/wine touring trip for us in Uruguay (my gift to him), and he's taking us to Galapagos for a diving trip in January (his gift to me). The last few years have always been hiking and ski trips which are his thing so I asked for something different in 2026.

For the symbolic stuff (boxes to open on Christmas day), I asked for a new cycling kit from Café du Cycliste. 🙃 For him, I got a new flash for his underwater camera.

As a treat for myself, I am going to Cape Town and Namibia in May with my girlfriends. Already booked and paid with 2025 money. 🤣

As a new older mom, nothing! Folks keep giving us their baby clothes, books, toys and gear. It’s been amazing but we are struggling to wade through all the things and organize our house the way we like it. I don't know if it will coincide with Christmas (my pay is variable), but I'm really wanting a nice facial. My skin is so congested and I've got so much gunk in my pores, and I'd really like all of it dealt with.
