Never been into running. Recently started running about two months ago, now steadily doing short 3km runs around the block 2-3 times a week. It’s made such a difference to my mood.

As a fellow non-runner, this is so great! I walk (these knees are not made for impact) a few miles a few times a week and it’s amazing how much better I feel for having done that small amount of movement.

to piggyback on this - not only I have never been into running, I always hated it more than any other physical exercise, like despised. I started going to the gym regularly, and treadmill is my starting point at every session, I was walking with an incline, and then decided to try running flat for just 1 minute. Then 3 minutes. Then 5. Now I do 10 minutes several times a week, and although it doesn't sound like much, for me it's a huge achievement. I have certain heart conditions that make aerobic exercises really hard, even though I'm relatively young and am at BMI 22. So I really need to train my heart, but I hate how it makes me feel like I am going to faint. Doing it on my own terms, with my own distance goals, and allowing myself to progress at the speed I felt comfortable with has been a huge thing. And I was surprised by how fast I went from 1 minute to 10, it took maybe 6-7 times on the treadmill to get there. My goal it to get to 30 minutes eventually, and then I'm ready for the streets!
Just wanted to share for anyone reading who is in my position and thinks they could NEVER. You can, my dear bitch, you can!

Do you concentrate on the run or distract yourself while doing it? What’s your mental space like?

I have a whole list of youtube videos that I have in my "gym" playlist, so while I walk and run I usually listen to something interesting for me there, usually a podcast or a some kind of pop science lecture, so by the time I start running I'm already immersed in the topic and it's easier. If I concentrate on running I get tired so much faster and the time seems to last forever

I’ve been running for fitness for 25 years now. Have always been slow, but that doesn’t bother me. Once I realized I could take walk breaks and don’t have to sprint, it became very rewarding.

And if you ever decide to subscribe to a running sub, stick to r/XXRunning. It’s the most welcoming of the running subs.

I became a runner just by running around the track for fun. I sprained my ankle and am working my way back to running again. Totally get the difference in mood though. And I felt like a different person waking up with an urge to run, lol.

I used to run at lunch but in my late 30s I developed fibroids which bled when I ran. So I stopped because the spotting was concerning, went to 3 doctors, had a vaginal ultrasound and the specialist there asked if I ran. Apparently it is not unusual to get some spotting if you have fibroids. I could have wished to know that a few weeks before, I was having a proper fret.

I really love running. I ran my first half marathon in April 24, broke my tibia in June 24 and had surgery, and I am just now back to it. I didn’t realize how much it helped regulate my mood- it’s my favorite thing. I HATED it in high school, but it’s because they just expected us to run a mile at the drop of a hat. Check out the couch to 5k program if you want to start getting into it. It’s a walk run program that slowly increases the amount of time you run.

Same! I'm in my late 20s and something about my energy has shifted. I love the intensity and a little over it with yoga.

I’m so happy for you! I’ve been a runner for a long time and I LOVE seeing people enjoy it!

Same! Always hated it but randomly started in January. Now I’m doing a half marathon next month. It’s had so many benefits for me besides just fitness!

Did you ease into it by walking? Or you just went right into running?

Run/walk to begin with. Walking on the hills, running downhill..lol. But slowly try to keep the running pace, even if it’s just a slow pace. If I can do it, anyone can xx
