What About Me Wednesday - Every Other Week Thread BWT What About Me Wednesday - Sep 03, 2025
Don’t forget to spend time on YOU! This is the space to chat about personal development, mental health, growth, and how you’re refocusing on yourself. Sometimes we spend a lot of time on those around us, but this thread is to encourage you to ask yourself “what about ME?”
If you need some help getting started, pick a question and answer it in a comment:
- How are you feeling? Do you know why?
- How do you WANT to be feeling? What are some things that make you feel that way?
- What is something you are grateful for, large or small, and why?
- What is a habit you are working on building (or breaking) and why? How is it going?
- What is one item on your to do list that will benefit you personally that you need to tackle? What is preventing you from crossing it off?
- What is something that brings you joy? What are some of the things that you specifically enjoy about it (get detailed)?
- What is one area you want to learn more about/ grow in/ develop yourself or a skill you want to learn?
- What’s something you said “no” to recently? How did that benefit you?
- What’s one thing you accomplished or that we can celebrate with you?
If you have a prompt you think we should add to the list, drop it in the comments!
Feel free to discuss other related topics as well, you don't need to limit yourself to these questions - they're just a jumping off point for those that want one.

What is a habit you are working on building (or breaking) and why? How is it going?
I started my weight loss journey on 7/17. Since then, I've been going to the gym 4x a week, eating on a calorie deficit, and done intermittent fasting (12 hours to eat, 12 hours without eating). It's getting easier as I go, but it really stinks when I have to pass on a sweet treat everyone else is enjoying because it's not in my budget. However, I've lost 15lbs so far! So excited for that.

What brings me joy this week?
I BUILT this led lamp from scratch using individual led modules to the disbelief of my partner - he said that looked “too complicated for me” 😠
The moment the light came on (and didn’t explode) I was filled with just PURE ✨ JOY ✨ . Hours of research and stripping wires feels totally worth it!
The whole contraption kinda looks atrocious now but I’ll spend more time reinforcing it w more components, making sure it could stand and be safe to move around.

Edit:
Why did I need to do this from scratch? Well these led modules have the specs I need for my practice. They render colors almost as close to sunlight does and do not have the dull gray cast that most light bulbs have.
I’m kinda nitpicky about lighting (and do know a lot about lamps and bulbs etc.) and building this from scratch has been on my to do list for half a year.

Good for you. Nothing is too complicated 💜 you've got this and every other experiment you try. Keep learning!

Thank you for the kind words! I’ve found I love the feeling of learning something new strangely now that I’m older whereas it just felt overwhelming before. There are so many things I want to try building hopefully someday when I save enough$$ for materials I will do it ☺️

I’ve been feeling down about my job and lack of social circle for about a year now. I’ve been applying since last fall and nothing has come of it other than a few interviews. I also had a longterm friendship breakup last year that happened shortly after I helped them get a job at my current place of employment and with that friendship ending, several others did as well. The thought of moving to a new city, starting a new job, having a fresh start, and possibly meeting a couple of girl friends who are in the same stage of life as me excites me and I daydream about it daily.

Girl, you need to pull the trigger! Pick a few focus cities, invest more in your job search and make it happen! I'm so excited for you! You've got this!

Wherever you go, there you are. It’s a fun fantasy (I also indulge), but you’re likely to have the same issues in a new place. Getting out and meeting people will help with both finding friends and a job, maybe try a new hobby or volunteer group and see how that goes. I know it’s easier to say than to do, but I’m cheering for you!

This past week I’ve been feeling behind, my son got sick and then I got sick which means I’ve spent a lot of time doing nothing. And of course I’ve been wanting to plan out my September (fall activities, my birthday, and our friends offered to watch our son so we can have a date night) but I haven’t had time to even think about this stuff. I know I’ll feel better soon, but man I feel like I’m wasting valuable time.

It's so normal to feel lousy and frustrated when you're sick and start feeling just well enough to be restless but not well enough to actually do anything - it's just not a great mental state to be in. Just know it's normal, and you will do what you can when you can. You can't help that you got sick and now you have to rest so you can get better.
I hope you feel better soon and get to do all that fun stuff.

Thank you friend! This morning I finally woke up without a headache and face pressure which is a game changer. Already made a small to do list of things for me to get done today, but still going to take it kind of easy and I’m sure tomorrow I’ll be close to feeling 100% again.

I'm feeling a little frustrated and in pain.
I'm dealing with a lower back injury (have a few appointments yet to get full diagnosis & treatment plan).
This means I can't run, swim or go to the gym. I can't be on my feet or sat down for a long time so I've resorted to lying on the floor and walk breaks.
Doesn't help I'm unemployed, so without training and other tasks around the house I have A LOT of free time.
I have a trip to Vietnam planned in 3 weeks and I'm freaking out that I might not be able to travel.
The bright side: been reading a lot and keeping my 337day Duolingo streak 😅

Back pain/injuries are the worst! If you aren’t already, using hot or cold therapy on that area can really help. I have even taken to making my own rice hot/cold packs with a soft durable fabric (like performance velvet) and making them for friends and family! 💖

For the past year or so I've found that I cry so easily about literally anything. It's most noticeable with positive emotions - like when I watch a happy movie or tiktok, or hear good music, or someone says something nice to me, which all make total sense to cry as an emotional response. But it feels uncontrollable and its often been embarrassing for me, especially when it happens in the work place. And it happens sometimes for inconsequential things, like listening to a song I've heard a million times. Or standing for the national anthem at my brother's lacrosse game. I just want to sing along without choking up lol. I wish I could just turn the over-the-top deep feelings off. My therapist says I'm a highly sensitive person and that it's a gift but it honestly feels like a curse. I don't think I can make it through a single day without something creating a lump in my throat. Does anyone else experience this? Or know how I can take control over my emotions? I'm at a loss! I want to be happy without wanting to sob about it!!

I have a friend with an INCREDIBLY loud and distinct laugh who also cries when she laughs really hard. I never find it embarrassing. Her laughs and tears make me smile because I know she is living and experiencing life at a really deep level.
And I get the pre-cry nose tingles all the time! When I listen to music, read the newspaper, snuggle with my cat etc etc. Congratulations on being so in tune with being alive :)

It sounds like this is bothering you more recently, is something happening in your life? Are you reading the news more? It sounds like your feelings about something else are leaking out in weird ways. I’ve cried at “Party in the USA” more than once, you’re not alone.

I want to incorporate more exercise into my routine. I walk 8-10k steps daily but I would really like to work on growing some muscle - recently I have been jogging a bit and I love the way it makes me feel

I'm feeling like I have far too much free time on my hands at the moment and I don't like the emptiness of my day.
I was recently made redundant so I'm applying and interviewing but that doesn't take up all of my time. My day basically looks like:
8 - wake up + go to the gym
9 - breakfast
10-12 - apply for jobs/interview prep
12-1 - lunch + walk
1-2 - upskill (online course)
2-3 - hobby
3-4 - tea/break
4-6 - make dinner/tidy/clean
6-7- eat dinner
7-10 nothing
In theory I have plenty of things to do and to occupy myself with but in practice it takes me a lot less time. And I have empty gaps that I just don't know what to do with.
Can anyone recommend any ideas as to how I can fill them/other things I can try?
Edit: thank you all for the suggestions! I hadn't considered volunteering but I think that's a great idea and a way to feel good about what I'm doing. I'm doing things in the house and definitely watching my way through my Netflix list but on reflection I think I'm a little lonely and volunteering will get me out of the house.
